Engine Cooling System: Removal & Installation Ford Ranger I

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to the «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 3.0L & 4.0L»(ref-204985-S11979372962005111600000) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
  3. Remove the generator wiring harness bracket nut and position the wiring harness aside.
  4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  5. Remove the bolts, the water outlet adapter and the thermostat. Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal & Installation

Note. The thermostat and thermostat housing are serviced as an assembly.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S18667258522005111600000) .
  2. Disconnect the hose and the electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the radiator lower hose.
  4. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. The bypass tube and the lower radiator hose are a molded, one-piece assembly.

  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 3.0L & 4.0L»(ref-204985-S11979372962005111600000) .
  2. Remove the bypass hose from the water pump.
  3. Remove the lower radiator hose.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. The fan shroud and electric cooling fan are serviced as an assembly.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S18667258522005111600000) .
  2. Disconnect the hose from the degas bottle.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector and the hose from the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T»(ref-156143) for automatic transmissions, or «CLUTCHES»(ref-153163) for manual transmissions.
  5. Remove the RH inner fender splash shield. Remove the screws. Remove the pushpin. Remove the bolts. Remove the splash shield.
  6. Remove the hose mounting nuts.
  7. Disconnect the hose from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve and remove the hose from the vehicle.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S18667258522005111600000) .
  2. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T»(ref-156143) for automatic transmissions, or «CLUTCHES»(ref-153163) .
  3. Disconnect the hose from the coolant outlet pipe.
  4. Remove the RH inner fender splash shield. Remove the screws. Remove the pushpin. Remove the bolts. Remove the splash shield.
  5. Remove the coolant bypass hose from the routing clip.
  6. Disconnect the hose from the coolant bypass tube.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S18667258522005111600000) .
  2. Disconnect the radiator upper hose.
  3. Disconnect the degas bottle vent hose.
  4. Disconnect the degas bottle bottom hose.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the front coolant outlet tube.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S18667258522005111600000) .
  2. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T»(ref-156143) for automatic transmissions, or «CLUTCHES»(ref-153163) for manual transmissions ).
  3. Support the motor with an appropriate jack stand.
  4. Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.
  5. Disconnect the coolant temperature sender electrical connector.
  6. Remove the bolts, the rear coolant outlet pipe, and the gasket.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
WARNINGTo avoid personal injury, do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap while the engine is operating or hot. The coolant system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.

  1. Remove the speed control servo mounting bolt and position the servo aside.
  2. Disconnect the hoses and drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the coolant recovery reservoir from the vehicle.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
  2. Disconnect the connector.
  3. Disconnect the overflow hose at the radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080) and drain coolant from the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  4. Remove the two nuts and two bolts.
  5. Disconnect the washer motor hose.
  6. Remove the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
