Engine Cooling System: Other Ford Ranger I

Cap

  1. Inspect the radiator cap or degas bottle cap and seals for damage or deterioration. Install a new radiator cap (8100) or degas bottle cap (8101) if necessary.
  2. Fit the radiator cap to the Radiator/Heater Core Pressure Tester Kit using the aftermarket adapter.
  3. Slowly pump the pressure tester until the pressure gauge stops increasing and note the highest pressure reading. Release the pressure and repeat the test. Install a new radiator cap if the pressure is not 99.3-121.4 kPa (14.4-17.6 psi).

THERMOSTAT - WATER

A new water thermostat should be installed only after the following electrical and mechanical tests have been carried out.

Filling & Bleeding With RADKITPLUS

  1. Using the special tool, install the RADKITPLUS and follow the RADKITPLUS manufacturer's instructions to fill and bleed the cooling system.

Filling & Bleeding Without RADKITPLUS

CAUTIONEngine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and clean drinkable water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (VC-5 in Oregon, CXC-10 in Canada) or an equivalent meeting specification ESE-M97B44-A (Green color), or Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B51-A1 (Yellow color). Use the same coolant that was drained from the system. Do not mix coolant types. Do not add Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant VC-2 or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant's corrosion protection. Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. Do not mix recycled coolant unless it meets the requirements of specification ESE-M97B44-A or WSSM97B51-A1. Not all coolant recycling processes meet these specifications. Use of such coolants may harm the engine and cooling system components.

Note. The addition of Motorcraft Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets, VC-6, darkens Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant from Yellow to Golden Tan.

  1. Install the lower radiator cover.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Fill the degas bottle with the correct engine coolant mixture.
  4. Install the pressure relief cap.
  5. Move the temperature blend selector to the full warm position.
  6. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature.
  7. Add the correct coolant mixture to the degas bottle until the coolant level is between the "COOLANT FILL LEVEL" marks.
  8. Turn off the engine and allow the cooling system to cool. Recheck the coolant level and fill the cooling system to the FULL mark on the degas bottle.
  9. Repeat Steps 3 through 8 until the reservoir level is OK.

Bleeding Without RADKITPLUS

  1. Bleed the cooling system as follows: Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air from the A/C vents in the instrument panel. WARNING: Do not stand in line with or near the engine cooling fan blade when revving the engine. Start the engine and allow it to idle. While the engine is idling, feel for hot air from the A/C vents. CAUTION: If the air discharge remains cool and the engine coolant temperature gauge does not move, the engine coolant level is low in the engine and must be filled. Stop the engine, allow it to cool and fill the cooling system. Start the engine and allow it to idle until the normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from the A/C vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading in the middle of the NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch. Shut the engine off and allow it to cool. Check the engine for coolant leaks. Check the engine coolant level in the degas bottle and fill it as necessary.

  2. Remove the water thermostat.
  3. Install the water thermostat housing without the water thermostat.
  4. Use an appropriate cooling system flusher to flush the engine and radiator. Use premium cooling system flush.
  5. Install the water thermostat.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4. Remove the block heater (6A051). NOTE: Do not loosen the screw more than necessary for removal. Loosen the screw. Twist and slide the block heater to release the retainer clip and discard the retainer clip. Remove the block heater.

  2. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water outlet connection.
  3. Remove the bolts, the water outlet connection and the water thermostat (8575).
  4. Discard the gasket and clean the sealing surfaces.

  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.

  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING - 3.0L & 4.0L»(ref-204985-S11979372962005111600000) .
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659).
  4. Remove the fan blade (8600) and the fan shroud (8146). For additional information, refer to «SHROUD - 3.0L & 4.0L»(ref-204985-S18304269362005111600000) .
  5. Disconnect the water bypass tube (8555).
  6. Remove the accessory drive belt (8620). For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-139084) .
  7. Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley (8509).
  8. Remove the bolts from the A/C compressor mounting bracket (2882).
  9. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
  10. Remove the bolts and position the bracket and compressor aside.
  11. Remove the bolts and remove the water pump (8501).
  12. Clean the sealing surfaces.

  3. Install the A/C compressor.
  4. Install the water pump pulley.

  6. Connect the heater hose.
  7. Connect the lower radiator hose.

  9. Install the air cleaner outlet tube.

  4. Remove the belt idler pulley.
  5. Slide the water bypass hose clamp back.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump. Release the clamp. Remove the hose.
  7. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water pump. Release the clamp. Remove the hose.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley.
  9. Remove the water pump.
  10. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the coolant overflow hose from the radiator, position the hose away from the radiator.
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  4. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. For additional information, refer to «COOLING FAN MOTOR & SHROUD - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S20168361412005111600000) .
  5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
  6. Remove the bolts, tilt the radiator back and lift it directly upward.
  7. Remove the three pushpins and the plastic cap from the top of the radiator channel.

  1. Install the plastic cap and the three pushpins on the top of the radiator channel.
  2. Position the radiator into the engine compartment and install the bolts.
  3. Install the lower radiator hose to the radiator.
  4. Install the cooling fan and shroud. For additional information, refer to «COOLING FAN MOTOR & SHROUD - 2.3L»(ref-204985-S20168361412005111600000) .
  5. Install the upper radiator hose to the radiator.
  6. Position the coolant overflow hose in the channel on top of the radiator, then connect the hose to the radiator.

  8. Operate the engine for several minutes and check the hoses and connections for leaks.

  2. Disconnect the radiator overflow hose or radiator vent hose.

  4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
  5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
  6. If equipped, disconnect the two transmission cooler lines.
  7. If equipped, disconnect the transmission cooler tubes at the bottom of the radiator.
  8. Remove the bolts and tilt the radiator back and lift directly upward.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  3. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the air cleaner outlet tube.
  4. Loosen the fitting and disconnect the exhaust manifold-to-Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve tube.
  5. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts.
  6. Remove the intake manifold bolts and position aside the intake manifold.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  8. Remove the clip and the engine coolant temperature sender unit.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
