4-CYLINDER MODELS - 1.9L CFI & PFI

Note. To ensure proper installation of 1.9L engine, measure and record distance between crankshaft damper to frame rail, and transaxle to frame rail. On manual transaxle, check and record distance between transaxle case and frame rail. On automatic transaxle, check distance between oil pump housing and frame rail. Position engine at installation to the above measurements. Proper clearances are necessary to ensure correct drive axle shaft alignment. Crankshaft-to-frame rail should be .47-.79" (12.0-20.1 mm). Transaxle-to-frame rail should be .79-1.17" (20.0-30.0 mm).

Removal (Escort)

1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Remove air cleaner, hot air tube, alternator air tube and airflow sensor (if equipped). Disconnect electrical connector at inertia switch in trunk and crank engine for 15 seconds to release fuel pressure. On CFI models, disconnect fuel line at engine.
2. On PFI models, disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. On all models, disconnect negative battery cable at both ends. Remove secondary wire from ignition coil. Drain cooling system. Remove all drive belts. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position alternator aside. Disconnect thermactor pump hoses and remove pump (if equipped).
4. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at engine. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines at radiator (if equipped). Disconnect heater return hose at engine. Disconnect all electrical wiring and vacuum hoses at engine. Disconnect fuel lines at pump or intake manifold. Remove fan motor and shroud assembly.
5. On automatic transaxles, remove transaxle cooler line routing clip. On all models, remove radiator. Disconnect heater hose at steel tube. Remove power steering pump filter tube and plug pump opening (if equipped).
6. Disconnect throttle kickdown linkage (if equipped), accelerator cable and bracket at engine. Disconnect vacuum hose from thermactor valve. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove cable bracket screws. Disconnect fuel vapor hose at carbon canister tube.
7. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove clamp from heater supply and return tubes. Disconnect battery cable from starter motor. Remove brace at front of starter motor. On manual transaxles, remove roll restrictor.
8. On all models, remove starter motor and brace rear section. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove converter/flywheel cover and brackets.
9. Remove crankshaft pulley. On manual transaxles, remove lower timing belt cover bolts. Remove lower clutch housing bolts. On automatic transaxles, remove torque converter-to-drive plate nuts. Remove lower converter/flywheel housing bolts.
10. On all models, remove coolant by-pass hose at intake manifold. Remove lower right side engine mount bolt and nut. Lower vehicle. Attach engine lift to brackets. Remove right side engine mount through-bolt and remove engine mount.
11. On manual transaxles, remove timing belt cover. On all models, remove engine mount attaching bracket from engine. Position floor jack under transaxle and support transaxle. Remove converter/flywheel housing upper attaching bolts. Carefully lift engine out, making sure converter studs clear drive plate.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure drive axle shaft alignment is correct. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks.

4-CYLINDER MODELS - 2.2L PFI

Note. Engine/transaxle is removed as an assembly.

Removal (Probe)

1. Before disconnecting fuel hoses, fuel pressure must be released. Disconnect fuel pump relay. Start engine and operate until engine stalls. Disconnect battery cables. Mark hood hinge location and remove hood. Drain cooling system, engine oil and transaxle fluid.
2. Remove battery, battery tray and fuse holder. Remove air cleaner assembly and ducting. On turbocharged models, remove turbocharger hoses and pipes. Cover turbocharger openings. On all models, Disconnect engine and EFI wiring harness and place out of way.
3. Disconnect electrical wiring at ignition coil, 3 sensors at thermostat housing and at oxygen sensor. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connectors. Disconnect transaxle cooling lines. Remove radiator and cooling fan assembly.
4. On manual transaxle models, disconnect clutch release cylinder. On all models, disconnect front exhaust pipe. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect A/C compressor lines and electrical connectors. Disconnect power steering lines at pump.
5. Disconnect engine ground straps, heater hoses and fuel lines. Disconnect vacuum hoses from brake booster and charcoal canister. Disconnect vacuum lines to bulkhead-mounted solenoids and distributor.
6. Disconnect transaxle electrical connectors. Disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle. Disconnect left and right drive axle shafts at transaxle. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS & CV JOINTS in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect transaxle control linkage and cables.
7. Install engine lifting device. Remove engine mount bolts. Carefully lift engine/transaxle assembly out of vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Mustang)

1. Raise hood and secure in vertical position. Disconnect ground cable. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail service valve. Release fuel into container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B).
2. Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. Drain cooling system. Drain engine oil. Remove air cleaner and tubing. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped). Remove radiator. Disconnect power lead to cooling fan motor. Remove cooling fan and shroud assembly.
4. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Disconnect all wiring, vacuum hoses and linkages from engine. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket (if equipped). Position compressor aside with lines connected.
5. Remove upper bellhousing bolts. Remove starter. Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Disconnect right and left motor mounts at crossmember pedestal. Remove bellhousing cover.
6. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, match mark flexplate and converter and remove bolts attaching converter to flexplate. Disconnect oil cooler lines from engine. Remove remaining bolts attaching bellhousing to engine. Lower vehicle. Support transmission with a jack. Attach engine hoist and remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks.

4-CYLINDER MODELS - 2.3L HSC & HSO

Note. Engine/transaxle is removed as an assembly.

Removal (Tempo & Topaz)

1. Mark hinges for reinstallation. Remove hood. Disconnect ground cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect transaxle cooler lines at hoses below radiator (if equipped).
2. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail service valve. Release fuel into container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. Remove coil assembly. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Remove radiator shroud and cooling fan as assembly. Remove radiator. Discharge A/C system and disconnect hoses at compressor (if equipped). Disconnect all electrical and vacuum lines.
4. On automatic transaxle, disconnect throttle valve linkage. Disconnect clutch cable on manual transaxle. Disconnect accelerator linkage and thermactor discharge hose at pump.
5. Disconnect power steering hoses at pump (if equipped). Remove hose bracket at cylinder head. Attach engine support tool to lifting eye. Raise vehicle.
6. Remove positive battery cable. Remove fresh air tube from catalytic converter. Remove exhaust pipe bracket bolt at oil pan and exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts. Disconnect exhaust system from grommets and set aside. Disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.
7. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Remove water pump inlet tube and clamps. Disconnect control arms at body. Remove stabilizer bar brackets. Remove half-shaft assemblies and install alignment plugs in differential side gears. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS & CV JOINTS in DRIVE AXLE.
8. On manual transaxle, remove roll restrictor, shift stabilizer bar-to-transaxle bolts and shift mechanism-to-shift shaft bolt. On automatic transaxle, disconnect manual shift cable clip and remove manual shift linkage bracket.
9. Remove left rear engine mount bracket. Remove left front engine mount-to-transaxle mount bolts. Lower vehicle. Attach engine hoist to lifting eyes. Remove engine support tool. DO NOT allow front wheels to touch floor.
10. Remove right-hand insulator intermediate bracket from engine bracket and insulator. Lower engine/transaxle assembly to floor.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Taurus)

1. Relieve fuel system pressure by disconnecting electrical connector at inertia switch, then cranking engine for 15 seconds. On automatic transaxle equipped models, remove timing window cover at transaxle and rotate engine until flywheel timing marker is aligned with timing pointer. Mark crankshaft pulley at 12 o'clock position (TDC). Rotate crankshaft pulley mark to 6 o'clock position.
2. On all models, disconnect battery negative cable. Mark hood hinge position and remove hood. Remove air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator hose at engine. Remove all wiring and vacuum lines as necessary.
3. Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose at valve cover and intake manifold. Remove fuel lines at throttle body. Disconnect ground wire at engine. Remove accelerator cable and throttle valve control cable at throttle body. Discharge air conditioning system and remove pressure and suction lines from compressor (if equipped).
4. Remove drive belt, water pump pulley, and air cleaner-to-canister hose. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Disconnect starter cable and remove starter motor.
5. On automatic transaxle equipped models, remove converter nuts. Position mark previously made on crankshaft pulley as close to 6 o'clock position (BDC) as possible with converter stud visible. NOTE: Flywheel timing marker must be in 6 o'clock (BDC) position for proper engine removal and installation.
6. Remove engine mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove canister bracket and half-shaft bracket from engine. Remove lower engine-to-transmission attaching bolts. Disconnect lower radiator hose at tube. Lower vehicle. Position jack under transaxle. Attach lifting hoist. Carefully lift engine from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system.

V6 MODELS - 3.0L & 3.0L SHO

Note. On Probe models, manufacturer recommends removing engine from the top with transaxle attached. On Sable and Taurus models, manufacturer recommends removing engine from the top without transaxle.

1. Disconnect battery cables. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain cooling system and discharge A/C (if equipped). Remove air cleaner assembly, battery and tray, integrated relay controller, cooling fan, radiator and shroud. Remove vacuum valve assembly from right shock tower. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure.
2. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. Disconnect evaporative emission line, upper radiator hose, starter brace, lower radiator hose, and exhaust manifold at pipe. Remove power steering pump lines, vacuum lines, ground strap and heater hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable linkage, throttle valve linkage, and speed control cable.
4. Disconnect following connections: alternator, A/C compressor, EGO sensor, ignition coil, radio frequency suppressor, cooling fan voltage resistor, coolant temperature sensor, and TFI module.
5. Remove following components of injector wiring harness: 6 injectors, ACT sensor, ISC, and throttle position sensor. Remove oil pressure sending switch, ground wire, block heater (if equipped), knock sensor, EGR sensor and oil level sensor. Install engine lifting bolts and chains.
6. On automatic transmissions, disconnect transmission shift cable and all wiring connectors. On analog cluster vehicles, disconnect speedometer cable. On electronic cluster vehicles, disconnect vehicle speed sensor. On automatic transaxle vehicles, disconnect transmission cooler lines. On manual transaxle vehicles, remove clutch slave cylinder.
7. On all models, raise vehicle. Remove front tires. Remove front exhaust pipe. Remove starter. On manual transaxle vehicles, remove shift control rod and extension bar. On all models, remove stabilizer links. Remove tie rod ends from lower control arms. Disconnect lower ball joints, pull down on control arms to disengage from spindle.
8. Remove 3 bolts from dynamic damper bracket on right side halfshaft. Pulling outward on left side spindle assembly, disengage left halfshaft from transaxle. This procedure leaves halfshaft assemblies in chassis. Install two Transaxle Plugs (T88C-7025-AH) into differential side gears. CAUTION: Failure to install Transaxle Plugs may allow differential side gears to become mispositioned.
9. Disconnect lower rear transmission mount. Lower vehicle. Attach engine hoist to engine. Disconnect lower front engine mount. Disconnect tight an left upper engine mounts. Carefully lift engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system.

Removal (Sable & Taurus)

1. Disconnect battery cables. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain cooling system and discharge A/C (if equipped). Remove air cleaner assembly, battery and tray, integrated relay controller, cooling fan, radiator and shroud. Remove vacuum valve assembly from right shock tower. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure.
2. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. Disconnect evaporative emission line, upper radiator hose, starter brace, lower radiator hose and exhaust manifold at pipe. Remove power steering pump lines, vacuum lines, ground strap and heater hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable linkage, throttle valve linkage, and speed control cable.
4. Disconnect following connections: alternator, A/C compressor, EGO sensor, ignition coil, radio frequency suppressor, cooling fan voltage resistor, coolant temperature sensor, and TFI module.
5. Remove following injector wiring harness components: 6 injectors, ACT sensor, ISC and throttle position sensor. Remove oil pressure sending switch, ground wire, block heater (if equipped), knock sensor, EGR sensor and oil level sensor. Install engine lifting bolts and chains.
6. Raise and support vehicle. Place jack and wood block under engine block. Remove nuts attaching right front and right rear engine mount to frame. Raise engine with jack. Remove 2 through bolts and remove right side engine mount from engine bracket. Lower engine.
7. Remove left tire and wheel. With jack and wood block still under engine, remove hydraulic engine damper-to-transmission support assembly nut. Push damper shaft up and out of way. Remove 2 engine mount-to-support assembly nuts.
8. Remove 2 left side engine mount-to-frame through bolts. Raise transmission with jack. Remove support assembly-to-transmission bolts. Remove the left side engine mount and/or transmission support assembly.
9. Remove lower end of right engine damper-to-engine bracket bolt. Remove upper damper bracket-to-shock tower bracket bolts. Remove engine damper. Remove speed control servo and bracket assembly.
10. Remove bolt and nut attaching lower end of left engine damper to engine mount attaching bracket. Remove upper damper bracket-to-side rail bracket bolts. Remove left engine damper. Remove engine-to-bellhousing bolts. Carefully lift engine from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system.

V6 MODELS - 3.8L

Note. See TSB NUMBER 91-5B-9 for information on revised engine mount replacement procedures.

Removal (Continental, Sable & Taurus)

1. Drain cooling system. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect under hood wiring connector for engine compartment light. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator.
2. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
3. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect alternator wiring, cooling fan electrical connector, transaxle cooling lines and pressure switch wiring. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Disconnect power steering hoses and hose brackets.
4. Disconnect A/C compressor clutch wiring. Disconnect A/C discharge and suction lines at compressor. Disconnect power steering pump tube bracket, ECC wire harness and vacuum lines. Disconnect ground wires at engine and throttle cable at throttle valve.
5. Remove engine oil dipstick. Remove upper radiator sight shield and integrated controller relay. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove cooling fan shroud. Disconnect upper radiator hose at engine. Remove coolant recovery reservoir. Remove air suspension compressor and position out of way (if equipped).
6. Remove transaxle support retaining bolts and remove support. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and remove A/C compressor. Raise vehicle on hoist. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Disconnect oxygen sensor wiring. Release tension on drive belts and remove crankshaft pulley assembly.
7. Remove drive belt tensioner assembly. Remove starter. Remove catalytic converter housing cover. Remove catalytic converter and inlet pipe assemble. Remove nuts from left and right engine mounts. Match mark flexplate and torque converter and remove attaching nuts.
8. Remove oil level indicator sensor. Disconnect lower radiator hose at engine. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, engine-to-transaxle bolts. Partially lower vehicle. Remove left and right front wheels. Remove drive belts. Remove water pump pulley bolts and remove pulley.
9. Remove radiator. Remove distributor cap and position out of way. Remove distributor rotor. Remove exhaust manifold lock bolts. Remove thermactor attaching bolts and remove thermactor. Disconnect oil pressure sender wire.
10. Install engine lifting equipment on engine lifting eyes. Remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Position jack under transaxle. Lift transaxle slightly as engine is lifted. Pull engine free of transaxle and remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system.

Removal (Cougar & Thunderbird)

1. Disconnect under hood wiring connector for engine compartment light. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain cooling system. Disconnect battery and alternator ground cables from engine. Remove windshield wiper module and left side cowl screen.
2. Remove air cleaner tube and air cleaner assembly. On supercharged models, remove upper intercooler tube at supercharger and cooler assemblies. Remove bolt retaining cooler tube to power steering bracket. Remove cooler tube.
3. On all models, remove radiator upper shield. Release drive belt tension and remove belts. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector. Remove radiator shroud and cooling fan assembly.
4. Remove upper radiator hose. Disconnect automatic transmission cooler lines. Disconnect heater hoses. Disconnect lower radiator hose at water pump. Remove radiator retaining bolts and remove radiator. On supercharged models, remove 2 push pins retaining intercooler before removing radiator.
5. On non-supercharged models, disconnect power steering pressure hose. Remove power steering bracket assembly and place power steering pump to one side. Discharge A/C system.
6. Disconnect compressor clutch electrical connector. Disconnect and plug A/C lines at compressor. Remove A/C compressor mount bolts. Remove A/C compressor. Remove cooling system reservoir. Remove engine wire harness shield. Remove accelerator cable and bracket and place to one side.
7. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve, located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B).
8. Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
9. Disconnect engine control module wiring and all engine electrical harnesses. Label and disconnect all vacuum hoses. On non-supercharged models, disconnect ground wire assembly and coil wire.
10. On supercharged models, disconnect DIS module wiring. Remove coil pack retaining bolts and position coil pack to one side. Remove lower intercooler tube-to-supercharger bolts.
11. Remove intercooler tube-to-power steering bracket bolts. Remove alternator wiring and bracket bolts. Remove alternator. Remove power steering bracket bolts and place power steering pump to one side.
12. On all models, disconnect canister purge hoses. Disconnect one end of throttle control valve cable. Raise vehicle on hoist and drain engine oil. Remove oil filter.
13. On supercharged models, remove 2 lower intercooler tube-to-intercooler nuts and remove intercooler.
14. On all models, remove exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts. Remove left side exhaust shield. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector. Remove inspection cover. Mark flexplate-to-torque converter for reassembly. Remove flexplate bolts.
15. Remove engine-to-transmission bolts. Remove engine mount through bolts. On supercharged models, remove left side mount retaining strap. On all models, remove crankshaft pulley assembly. Remove starter mount bolts and starter.
16. Remove ground cable and starter harness retainers. Disconnect oil level indicator electrical connector. Disconnect oil pressure sender wiring.
17. Partially lower vehicle. Place floor jack under transmission. Install engine lifting equipment. Carefully pull engine forward to clear transmission. Lift engine up and out of vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure all fluid levels are correct. Recharge A/C system. Start and run engine to check for leaks.

Removal (All Models)

1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain crankcase and cooling system. Disconnect battery and alternator ground cables from engine. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly. On 5.8L models, disconnect fuel lines at carburetor.
2. On 5.0L models, Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container.
3. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. (Scheme 26) NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
4. On all models, disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from radiator. Remove bolts attaching fan shroud to radiator. Remove radiator.
5. Remove fan, belt, pulley and shroud. Remove alternator bolts and position alternator aside. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit wire from sending unit.
6. Disconnect accelerator cable. Disconnect speed control cable (if equipped). Disconnect throttle valve vacuum line from intake manifold (if equipped). Disconnect transmission filler tube bracket from engine block. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove compressor with lines attached and set aside.
7. Disconnect power steering pump bracket from cylinder head. Remove drive belt. Position pump aside. Disconnect brake vacuum line from intake manifold.
8. Disconnect heater hoses from water pump and intake manifold. Disconnect coolant temperature sending unit wire from sending unit. Remove flywheel/converter housing-to-engine upper bolts.
9. Disconnect primary wiring connector from ignition coil. Remove wire harness and position aside. Disconnect ground strap from block. Raise front of vehicle. Disconnect starter cable from starter.
10. Remove starter. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds. Disconnect engine support insulators. Disconnect thermactor tubing and check valve from right side exhaust manifold stud.
11. Disconnect transmission cooler lines from retainer and remove converter housing inspection cover. Disconnect converter from flexplate. Secure converter assembly in housing. Remove remaining converter housing-to-engine bolts.
12. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Attach engine hoist and carefully separate engine from transmission. Remove engine.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks.
