Engine Oil Pan Removal Ford Probe I

Removal (Escort)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain oil. Disconnect starter cable. Remove starter brace, attaching bolts and starter.
  2. Remove 2 oil pan-to-transaxle bolts. Disconnect exhaust inlet pipe at manifold. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and oil pan. Remove oil pan gasket.

Installation

  1. Clean and inspect gasket surface. Clean oil pan and check for damage. Apply Silicone Rubber Sealer (D6AZ-19562-B) to corners of block at sealing point of oil pump and rear seal retainer joint. Install gasket in oil pan, ensuring tabs are fully engaged in oil pan gasket channel. NOTE: If oil pan is installed on engine outside of vehicle, a transaxle case or equivalent must be bolted to block to align oil pan flush with rear face of block.
  2. Install oil pan and tighten oil pan bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Probe)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right splash shield at front fender wheel opening. Drain engine oil. Remove engine-to-flywheel housing support bracket.
  2. Remove front section of exhaust pipe. Remove exhaust pipe support bracket. Remove flywheel housing dust cover bolts and cover. Remove oil pan bolts and pull down oil pan for access to oil pump. Remove oil pump pick-up tube and oil pan insert (stiffener). Remove oil pan.
  1. Clean all mounting surfaces. Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealer to both sides of the oil pan stiffener, along inside edge of bolt holes. Install oil pick-up tube with new gasket. Install stiffener and oil pan.
  2. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Mustang)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove radiator fan shroud. Remove electric cooling fan (if equipped). Drain cooling system and disconnect upper and lower hoses at radiator.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect low oil level sensor (if equipped). Remove right and left engine support through bolts. Using a jack, raise engine as far as possible and place support blocks between mounts and crossmember pedestals. Remove jack.
  3. Remove shake brace, sway bar retaining bolts and lower sway bar. Remove steering gear mounting bolts and lower gear. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter. Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan to crossmember. Remove oil pan.

Note. No. 4 piston must be at TDC for oil pan to clear crankshaft.

  1. Clean oil pan and gasket surface. Apply silicone sealer to front corners of oil pan. Position oil pan gasket on cylinder block. Position oil pan and reinforcements to cylinder block and install bolts.
  2. Tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Tempo & Topaz)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove lower radiator hose to drain coolant. On manual transaxle models, remove roll restrictor. On all models, remove starter wiring and starter.
  2. Disconnect exhaust pipe bracket from oil pan. Remove heater return hose at lower radiator and water pump inlet tube locations. Remove tube support from oil pan. Position air conditioning line aside. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
  1. Remove all silicone sealant from engine and oil pan. Clean all areas where sealant is to be used. Apply Sealer (E8AZ-19562-A) into oil pan groove, filling groove completely.
  2. Sealer bead should be .20" (5.0 mm) wide and .80-.15" (2.0-3.8 mm) high in all areas except half-rounds. Silicone bead on half-rounds should be .20" (5.0 mm) wide and .15-.20" (3.8-5.1 mm) high. Install oil pan. NOTE: If oil pan is installed on engine outside of vehicle, a transaxle case or equivalent must be bolted to block to align oil pan flush with rear face of block.
  3. Install and tighten oil pan bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Replace water inlet tube "O" ring and install tube. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install engine oil and coolant. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Taurus)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Drain coolant by removing lower radiator hose. Disconnect starter cable and remove starter.
  2. Disconnect exhaust pipe from oil pan. Remove engine coolant tube from lower radiator hose, water pump and at tabs on oil pan. Position air conditioner line aside. Remove oil pan.
  1. Remove all silicone sealant from engine and oil pan. Clean all areas where sealant will be applied. Apply Sealer (E8AZ-19562-A) into oil pan groove, filling groove completely.
  2. Sealer bead should be .20" (5.0 mm) wide and .80-.15" (2.0-3.8 mm) high in all areas except half-rounds. Silicone bead on half-rounds should be .20" (5.0 mm) wide and .15-.20" (3.8-5.1 mm) high. Install oil pan. NOTE: If oil pan is installed on engine outside of vehicle, a transaxle case or equivalent must be bolted to block to align oil pan flush with rear face of block.
  3. Install and tighten oil pan bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Replace water inlet tube "O" ring and install tube. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install engine oil and coolant. Start engine and check for leaks.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect battery lead and "S" terminal wire connector at starter. Remove starter bolts and starter. Remove front and rear transaxle-to-engine braces.
  2. Disconnect low oil level sensor connector from oil pan. Remove exhaust inlet pipe from manifold. Drain cooling system. Remove water pump, bracket and idler pulley tensioner (if necessary). See appropriate ENGINE article. Remove bolts and nut from front end of right side crossmember. CAUTION: DO NOT remove oil pan without lowering crossmember or oil pan baffle may be damaged by crankshaft.
  3. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, bolts and nut from rear end of right side crossmember. Allow crossmember to drop as low as possible to permit removal of oil pan. Remove oil pan bolts. Remove oil pan by pulling straight down without turning or prying.
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces. Clean and inspect oil pan and baffle for damage. Apply bead of Silicone Sealer (D6AZ-19562-A) to junction of rear main bearing cap and cylinder block and junction of front cover assembly and cylinder block.
  2. Position oil pan gasket on pan with bend against pan surface, secure with gasket adhesive. Install oil pan. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install engine oil and coolant. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Sable & Taurus)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove dipstick. Raise and support vehicle. Remove electrical connector and retainer clip at low oil level sensor (if equipped).
  2. Drain oil from crankcase. Remove starter motor. Disconnect oxygen sensor(s). Remove exhaust pipe assembly and lower engine. Remove lower engine/flywheel dust cover from converter housing. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and oil pan.

Clean all gasket surfaces. Inspect oil pan for damage. Position oil pan gasket on pan with bend against pan surface. Secure gasket to oil pan with gasket adhesive. Install oil pan. Install bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Continental, Sable & Taurus)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove oil filter. Remove catalytic converter assembly and starter motor. Remove torque converter housing cover. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Clean all gasket surfaces. Inspect oil pan for damage. Apply sealer to oil pan. Ensure enough clearance has been provided to allow oil pan to be installed without sealant being scraped off on cylinder block. Install oil pan. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Cougar & Thunderbird)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air intake duct assembly. Remove 2 bolts attaching sight shield and place sight shield aside. Remove hood weather seal. Remove wiper arms. Remove left side cowl vent screen. Remove wiper module.
  2. On supercharged models, remove intercooler tubes. On all models, install engine lifting eyes. Install Engine Support Fixture (D88L-6000-A). Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove engine mount through bolts. On supercharged models, remove left side engine mount retaining strap.
  3. On all models, partially lower vehicle. Raise engine at support fixture. Raise vehicle. Remove starter motor. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Remove lower engine wire loom, ground strap and transmission cooler lines.
  4. Remove oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts. Remove crankshaft position sensor shield bolts (if equipped). Remove remaining oil pan bolts. Remove steering shaft pinch bolts and separate steering shaft.
  5. Position transmission jack under front of subframe. Remove 6 rear bolts from front of subframe. Loosen 2 front subframe bolts. Remove lower strut-to-control arm bolts and nuts. Lower subframe. Remove oil pan.

Clean all gasket surfaces. Inspect oil pan for damage. Apply sealer to oil pan. Ensure enough clearance has been provided to allow oil pan to be installed without sealant being scraped off on cylinder block. Install oil pan. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Mark VII & Mustang)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fan shroud bolts and position shroud over fan. Remove oil level indicator from left-hand side of cylinder block. Remove air cleaner tube.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove starter motor wires and starter. Remove catalytic converter and muffler inlet pipes. Remove engine mount-to-No. 2 crossmember bolts.
  3. Remove No. 3 crossmember and support assemblies. Remove steering gear attaching bolts and position steering gear forward out of work area. Raise and support engine for clearance of oil pan removal.
  4. On Mustang models, remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. Remove oil pump and pick-up tube assembly to drop into oil pan. Remove oil pan. On Mark VII models, remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan.
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces. Clean oil pan and inspect for damage. On Mark VII models, apply gasket sealer to pan gasket. Position gaskets in place and install oil pan.
  2. On Mustang models, apply gasket sealer to pan gaskets, position gaskets in place. Position oil pick-up tube assembly into oil pan. Lift oil pan into position and install oil pick-up tube. Install oil pan.
  3. On all models, tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

Removal (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)

  1. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown rods at carburetor (police model) or throttle body on all others. Remove accelerator mounting bracket. Remove fan shroud bolts and position shroud over fan. Disconnect wiring from harness and remove wiper motor.
  2. Disconnect windshield washer hose and remove wiper motor mounting cover. Remove dipstick and dipstick tube retaining bolt at exhaust manifold. Remove thermactor air dump tube retaining clamp and thermactor crossover tube at rear of engine.
  3. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove filler tube and drain crankcase. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  4. On 5.0L fuel injected models, fuel pressure must be released prior to disconnecting any fuel lines or hoses. Remove fuel filler cap. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve, located on fuel rail assembly. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into container. Disconnect fuel lines using Spring Lock Coupling (D87-9280-A for 3/8" or D87L-9280-B for 1/2" lines).
  5. On 5.8L models, disconnect fuel line. On all models, disconnect inlet pipes from exhaust manifold. Remove oxygen sensors from exhaust manifold and thermactor secondary air tube-to-converter housing clamps.
  6. Disconnect exhaust pipes-to-catalytic converter outlet. Remove catalytic converter secondary air tube and inlet pipes to exhaust manifold. Remove rear engine mount through bolts and shift crossover bolts at transmission.
  7. Disconnect transmission kickdown rod. Remove flywheel access cover. Remove brake line retainer from front crossmember. Using a jack, raise engine as far as possible.
  8. Place support blocks between engine mounts and chassis brackets. Remove jack. Disconnect low oil sensor from oil pan. Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan. Remove oil pump pick-up tube assembly and place in oil pan. Rotate crankshaft as necessary for clearance and remove oil pan.
  1. Clean and inspect gasket surfaces. Clean oil pan and inspect for damage. Apply gasket sealer to oil pan gaskets and place into position. With oil pick-up tube assembly positioned in oil pan, install pick-up tube then install oil pan.
  2. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
