ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Note. For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see the OVERHAUL PROCEDURES (GENERAL INFORMATION) article in this section.
Engine may be identified from Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). VIN is stamped on a plate on top of instrument panel, visible through windshield. VIN contains 17 characters. The eighth character identifies engine.
An engine identification label is located on front of engine. This label contains engine calibration number, engine build date, engine plant code and engine code.
An emission calibration number label is located on driver's door or door post pillar. This label identifies engine calibration number, engine code number and revision level.
All label numbers are necessary for determining correct and unique parts to specific engines. DO NOT remove labels at any time. Record these numbers for future reference.

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
No valve adjustment is required when performing tune-up procedure.
Note. If performing valve grind and valve or valve seat has been refaced, valve adjustment will be necessary. See COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE.
Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines prior to removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and all other major components before removal.
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
Fuel pressure must be released prior to disconnecting any fuel lines or hoses. Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve, located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container.
ENGINE
Note. On Probe models, manufacturer recommends removing engine from the top with transaxle attached. On Sable and Taurus models, manufacturer recommends removing engine from the top without transaxle.
Removal (Probe)
- Disconnect battery cables. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain cooling system and discharge A/C (if equipped). Remove air cleaner assembly, battery and tray, integrated relay controller, cooling fan, radiator and shroud. Remove vacuum valve assembly from right shock tower. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure.
- Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color-coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
- Disconnect evaporative emission line, upper radiator hose, starter brace, lower radiator hose, and exhaust manifold at pipe. Remove power steering pump lines, vacuum lines, ground strap and heater hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable linkage, throttle valve linkage, and speed control cable.
- Disconnect following connections: alternator, A/C compressor, EGO sensor, ignition coil, radio frequency suppressor, cooling fan voltage resistor, coolant temperature sensor, and TFI module.
- Remove following components of injector wiring harness: 6 injectors, ACT sensor, ISC, and throttle position sensor. Remove oil pressure sending switch, ground wire, block heater (if equipped), knock sensor, EGR sensor and oil level sensor. Install engine lifting bolts and chains.
- On automatic transmissions, disconnect transmission shift cable and all wiring connectors. On analog cluster vehicles, disconnect speedometer cable. On electronic cluster vehicles, disconnect vehicle speed sensor. On automatic transaxle vehicles, disconnect transmission cooler lines. On manual transaxle vehicles, remove clutch slave cylinder.
- On all models, raise vehicle. Remove front tires. Remove front exhaust pipe. Remove starter. On manual transaxle vehicles, remove shift control rod and extension bar. On all models, remove stabilizer links. Remove tie rod ends from lower control arms. Disconnect lower ball joints, pull down on control arms to disengage from spindle.
- Remove 3 bolts from dynamic damper bracket on right side halfshaft. Pulling outward on left side spindle assembly, disengage left halfshaft from transaxle. This procedure leaves halfshaft assemblies in chassis. Install two Transaxle Plugs (T88C-7025-AH) into differential side gears. CAUTION: Failure to install Transaxle Plugs may allow differential side gears to become mispositioned.
- Disconnect lower rear transmission mount. Lower vehicle. Attach engine hoist to engine. Disconnect lower front engine mount. Disconnect tight an left upper engine mounts. Carefully lift engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system.
Removal (Sable & Taurus)
- Disconnect battery cables. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Drain cooling system and discharge A/C (if equipped). Remove air cleaner assembly, battery and tray, integrated relay controller, cooling fan, radiator and shroud. Remove vacuum valve assembly from right shock tower. Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure.
- Attach a fuel pressure gauge to pressure relief valve located on fuel rail near fuel pressure regulator. Release fuel pressure through fuel gauge into a container. Disconnect fuel lines using appropriate Spring Lock Coupling Tool (D871-9280-A or B). Remove spring lock coupling retainer clip from fuel fitting. Place correct size spring lock coupling tool against coupling. Push tool into cage opening to release garter spring. Pull coupling apart and remove tool. NOTE: Replace fuel coupler "O" rings when removing fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings, color coded Brown. Lubricate new "O" rings with clean engine oil.
- Disconnect evaporative emission line, upper radiator hose, starter brace, lower radiator hose and exhaust manifold at pipe. Remove power steering pump lines, vacuum lines, ground strap and heater hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable linkage, throttle valve linkage, and speed control cable.

- Remove following injector wiring harness components: 6 injectors, ACT sensor, ISC and throttle position sensor. Remove oil pressure sending switch, ground wire, block heater (if equipped), knock sensor, EGR sensor and oil level sensor. Install engine lifting bolts and chains.
- Raise and support vehicle. Place jack and wood block under engine block. Remove nuts attaching right front and right rear engine mount to frame. Raise engine with jack. Remove 2 through bolts and remove right side engine mount from engine bracket. Lower engine.
- Remove left tire and wheel. With jack and wood block still under engine, remove hydraulic engine damper-to-transmission support assembly nut. Push damper shaft up and out of way. Remove 2 engine mount-to-support assembly nuts.
- Remove 2 left side engine mount-to-frame through bolts. Raise transmission with jack. Remove support assembly-to-transmission bolts. Remove the left side engine mount and/or transmission support assembly.
- Remove lower end of right engine damper-to-engine bracket bolt. Remove upper damper bracket-to-shock tower bracket bolts. Remove engine damper. Remove speed control servo and bracket assembly.
- Remove bolt and nut attaching lower end of left engine damper to engine mount attaching bracket. Remove upper damper bracket-to-side rail bracket bolts. Remove left engine damper. Remove engine-to-bellhousing bolts. Carefully lift engine from vehicle.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Check fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Recharge A/C system. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at end of article.
Scheme 15
- Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner flex hose and remove linkage. Mark and disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors as necessary. Disconnect EGR pipe tube if equipped and rotate tube away from valve.
- Remove accessories and/or brackets as necessary. Evenly remove upper intake and throttle body assembly bolts. (Scheme 15) Remove upper intake and throttle body assembly and gasket. Remove both valve covers.
- Release fuel pressure.See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__fuel-pressure-release) under ADJUSTMENTS. Using Coupling Disconnect Tool (D87L-9280-A), disconnect fuel supply line and return line. Remove wiring harness from fuel injectors. Remove cooling system hoses as necessary.
- Remove spark plug wires and distributor cap. Mark distributor-to-engine reference and remove distributor assembly. Evenly remove lower intake manifold bolts. Remove lower intake manifold and gaskets.
Scheme 16
- Clean gasket mating surfaces. Lightly oil attaching bolts and stud threads prior to installation. When using silicone sealer, assembly must occur within 15 minutes after sealer is applied. Apply Silicone Rubber Sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA) to intersection of cylinder block assembly and head assembly at all 4 corners. (Scheme 16)
- Install front intake manifold seal. When installing rear intake manifold seal, position seal with flat side toward distributor hole. Position intake manifold gaskets in place with locking tabs over tabs on cylinder head gaskets. Carefully lower intake manifold into position on cylinder block and cylinder heads to prevent smearing silicone sealer.
- Install lower intake manifold bolts and tighten in sequence specifications. (Scheme 17) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__torque-specifications) at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Front Cylinder Head)
Remove engine oil dipstick tube support bracket. Carefully rotate tube away from manifold stud. Remove exhaust manifold-to-inlet pipe nuts. Remove exhaust manifold bolts. Remove exhaust manifold. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lightly oil threads of bolts and stud prior to installation.
Removal & Installation (Rear Cylinder Head)
Remove heater hose support bracket. Remove EGR tube from exhaust manifold (if equipped). Remove exhaust manifold-to-inlet pipe nuts. Remove exhaust manifold bolts. Remove exhaust manifold. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lightly oil threads of bolts and stud prior to installation.
Removal
- Remove intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u) . Remove accessories and leave hoses attached as necessary. Loosen alternator drive belt tensioner and remove belt. Remove ignition coil bracket and dipstick tube from front cylinder head. Remove power steering belt tensioner from front cylinder head. Without removing hoses, place power steering pump and bracket to one side. Remove grounding straps and throttle cable support bracket from rear cylinder head.
- Remove exhaust manifolds as previously described. Remove PCV valve. Remove valve covers. Loosen rocker arm bolts. Pivot rocker arms off push rods. Keep push rods in order and remove push rods. Evenly remove cylinder head bolts and discard. Remove cylinder head(s) and discard gasket(s).
Inspection
- Clean gasket mating surfaces. Clean carbon from combustion chambers. Use care not to damage surfaces. Check cylinder head for cracks and warpage. Inspect gasket surface for burrs and nicks.
- If warpage exceeds .007" (.18 mm) in a 6.00" (152 mm) area, machine surface cylinder head. DO NOT machine surface more than .010" (.25 mm) from the original cylinder head gasket surface. Replace cylinder head as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article.
Scheme 18
- Replace dowels in cylinder block if damaged. Position new head gasket(s) on cylinder block using the dowels for alignment. Ensure marked side of gaskets are properly positioned. Install cylinder head(s) on block. Lightly oil bolt/stud threads prior to installing. Install NEW cylinder head bolts. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence to specifications. (Scheme 18) Refer to «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__torque-specifications) at end of article.
- Dip each push rod end in Oil Conditioner (D9AZ-19579-CA). Install push rods in their original location. For each valve, rotate crankshaft until lifter and push rod are at lowest point on camshaft lobe. Position rocker arm over push rod. Collapse lifter and tighten rocker arm bolt to specifications. NOTE: Rocker arms must be fully seated in cylinder head and push rods must be seated in rocker arm sockets prior to final tightening.
- With all rocker arms installed, check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip. See «COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__collapsed-lifter-clearance) in this article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specifications.
COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE
- Valve stem-to-rocker arm clearance should meet specifications with lifter totally collapsed. Valve and/or valve seat refacing can diminish clearance and allow valve to be held open.
- To determine rocker arm-to-valve stem clearance, attach auxiliary starter switch to starting circuit. With ignition off and crank engine until No. 1 piston is on TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse No. 1 intake valve lifter.
- Measure clearance between rocker arm and tip of valve stem, holding lifter in collapsed position. Repeat procedure for No. 1 exhaust, No. 2 exhaust, No. 3 intake, No. 4 exhaust and No. 6 intake.
- Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees (one revolution). Repeat procedure for No. 2 intake, No. 3 exhaust, No. 4 intake, No. 5 exhaust, No. 5 intake and No. 6 exhaust. The valve stem clearance should be .85-.185 (2.16-4.70 mm). If not within specifications, replace or grind valve stem as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article.

COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove right front wheel. Remove plastic inner fender shield. Support engine with floor jack. Remove right engine mount and spacer from water pump bracket. Lower floor jack to allow engine to rest on remaining mounts.
- Remove three nuts and bolt attaching right side subframe to body. Subframe can now be pulled down to provide clearance. Remove crankshaft damper bolt. Using Crankshaft Damper Remover (T58P-6316-D), remove damper from crankshaft. Using Front Cover Seal Remover (T70P-6B070-B), pry seal from front timing cover.
Inspect front cover and shaft seal surface of crankshaft damper for damage, nicks and burrs. Service or replace components as necessary. Lubricate seal lip with clean engine oil. Install damper and new seal with Damper/Front Seal Installer (T82L-6316-A and T70P-6B070-A). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove right front wheel. Remove 4 pulley bolts and crankshaft damper pulley. Using Crankshaft Damper Remover (T58P-6316-D) and Adapter (T28L-6316-B), remove damper from crankshaft. Using Front Cover Seal Remover (T70P-6B070-B), pry seal from front timing cover.
Inspect front cover and crankshaft damper seal surface for damage, nicks and burrs. Service or replace components as necessary. Lubricate seal lip with clean engine oil. Install damper and new seal with Damper/Front Seal Installer (T82L-6316-A and T70P-6B070-A). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley bolts and allow pulley to hang loose on hub.
- Remove crankshaft damper. See «FRONT COVER OIL SEAL»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u). Remove lower radiator hose. Remove oil pan. Remove 10 bolts retaining front timing cover assembly to block. (Scheme 19) Remove loosened water pump pulley from hub. Remove front timing cover and water pump as an assembly.

Clean gasket mating surfaces. Always install new gaskets. Use sealant on bolts threading into water jackets in block. (Scheme 19) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
Remove crankshaft pulley/damper. See FRONT COVER OIL SEAL in this article. Position No. 1 piston on TDC of compression stroke. Remove front timing cover. See FRONT TIMING COVER in this article. Check alignment of camshaft gear and crankshaft gear timing marks. Check timing chain deflection (stretch). Remove camshaft gear retaining bolt and washer. Remove timing chain and gears as an assembly.
- Timing chain deflection (stretch) can be checked for wear before removing front cover. Remove left valve cover. Loosen No. 5 exhaust rocker arm and rotate to one side.
- Position dial indicator on end of push rod. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to position cylinder No. 1 at TDC. Ensure crankshaft damper timing mark aligns with TDC mark on timing degree indicator. Zero dial indicator.
- Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise until movement is detected by dial indicator. Note crankshaft damper timing mark for number of degrees of travel from TDC. If reading exceeds 6 degrees, replace timing chain and gears.

Place timing chain on crankshaft and camshaft gear. Align timing marks on gears. (Scheme 20) Install camshaft bolt and washer. Tighten to specification. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. Apply oil to timing chain and gears after installation. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
Scheme 20
- Remove engine from vehicle. See ENGINE REMOVAL article in this Section. Remove front timing cover and intake manifold as previously described. Mark and remove valve lifters. Check camshaft end play.
- Remove timing chain and gears as an assembly as previously described. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Pull camshaft out front of engine. Use care not to damage bearings, journals and lobes. If replacing camshaft bearings, remove rear camshaft bore plug. Using a universal camshaft bearing replacer. Using Camshaft Bearing Set (T65L-6250-A), remove bearings.
- Standard and .015" (.38 mm) undersize camshaft bearings are available. No reaming is required. Ensure oil holes in bearing and bore are properly aligned. Ensure front bearing is installed .020-.035" (.51-.89 mm) below front face of cylinder block.
- Lubricate camshaft lobes and journals with SAE 50W engine oil. Carefully slide camshaft through bearings in cylinder block. Install thrust plate and recheck camshaft end play. Replace thrust plate if necessary. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Removal & Installation
Rear main seal is a one-piece seal. Either transaxle or engine must be removed to gain access. Using an awl, punch a hole in metal portion of seal. Using a slide hammer, remove seal. Use Rear Main Seal Installer (T88L-6701-A) to install seal.
- Drain cooling system. Remove accessory belts. Remove idler bracket from engine. Disconnect heater hose at water pump. Remove water pump pulley bolts. Pulley will remain loose on hub due to insufficient clearance.
- On Probe model, remove 3 water pump mounting bolts. (Scheme 21) On Sable and Taurus, remove 11 water pump mounting bolts. (Scheme 22) On all models, lift water pump assembly up and out of vehicle.

- Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation, EXCEPT specified bolt on Sable and Taurus that requires sealant. (Scheme 22) Sealant is necessary to prevent coolant leaks. Apply Contact Adhesive (D7AZ-19B508-A) to new gasket and position on water pump.
- Install water pump and pulley as an assembly. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__torque-specifications) at end of article. Fill cooling system with Ford Cooling System Fluid (E2FZ-19549-A) only. Leak check system.
Note. For information on cooling system capacity, see COOLING SYSTEMS SPECIFICATIONS article in the ENGINE COOLING Section.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect battery lead and "S" terminal wire connector at starter. Remove starter bolts and starter. Remove front and rear transaxle-to-engine braces.
- Disconnect low oil level sensor connector from oil pan. Remove exhaust inlet pipe from manifold. Drain cooling system. Remove water pump, bracket and idler pulley tensioner (if necessary). Remove bolts and nut from front end of right side crossmember. CAUTION: DO NOT remove oil pan without lowering crossmember or oil pan baffle may be damaged by crankshaft.
- Loosen, but DO NOT remove, bolts and nut from rear end of right side crossmember. Allow crossmember to drop as low as possible to permit removal of oil pan. Remove oil pan bolts. Remove oil pan by pulling straight down without turning or prying.
- Clean all gasket surfaces. Clean and inspect oil pan and baffle for damage. Apply bead of Silicone Sealer (D6AZ-19562-A) to junction of rear main bearing cap and cylinder block and junction of front cover assembly and cylinder block.
- Position oil pan gasket on pan with bend against pan surface, secure with gasket adhesive. Install oil pan. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u__torque-specifications) table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install engine oil and coolant. Start engine and check for leaks.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and remove dipstick. Raise and support vehicle. Remove electrical connector and retainer clip at low oil level sensor (if equipped).
- Drain oil from crankcase. Remove starter motor. Disconnect oxygen sensor(s). Remove exhaust pipe assembly and lower engine. Remove lower engine/flywheel dust cover from converter housing. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and oil pan.
Clean all gasket surfaces. Inspect oil pan for damage. Position oil pan gasket on pan with bend against pan surface. Secure gasket to oil pan with gasket adhesive. Install oil pan. Install bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.
Note. Lubricate valve tips with Multi-Purpose Grease (DOAZ-19584-A).
CYLINDER HEAD
- Clean gasket mating surfaces. Clean carbon from combustion chambers. Use care not to damage surfaces. Check cylinder head for cracks and warpage. Inspect gasket surface for burrs and nicks.
- If warpage exceeds .007" (.18 mm) in a 6.00" (152 mm) area, machine surface cylinder head. DO NOT machine surface more than .010" (.25 mm) from the original cylinder head gasket surface. Replace cylinder head as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article.
VALVE SPRINGS
- To check assembled valve spring height, measure from top of spring seat to bottom of spring retainer.
- If assembled spring height is greater than specification, install the necessary .030" (.85 mm) spacer(s) between cylinder head spring seat and valve spring to bring within specifications. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of this article

VALVE STEM OIL SEALS
Valve stem oil seals may be replaced with engine in vehicle using compressed air method. Intake and exhaust valve seals are different and are not to be interchanged.
VALVE GUIDES
Check and service valve guides prior to valve and seat service. Guides may be reamed to fit with oversize valves. Oversize valve seals must also be installed. Guide replacement information is not available from manufacturer.
VALVE SEATS
Valve seat replacement information is not available from manufacturer. Follow tool manufacturer's instructions for servicing valve seats. If seats are serviced, valves must be serviced or replaced.
SEAT CORRECTION ANGLES
After grinding seat, if seat width is too wide, a 30 degree or 70 degree stone can be used to reduce seat width. The 30 degree stone will lower the seat, as the 70 degree stone will raise the seat.
VALVES
Check valves and replace as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article. Machine or replace valves as necessary.
Note. If performing valve grind and valve or valve seat has been refaced, valve adjustment will be necessary. See COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
Scheme 23
- Using a feeler gauge and straightedge, check cylinder block head gasket surface for warpage. Check cylinder bore for wear, taper, out-of-round and piston fit. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article.
- Install all main bearing caps and tighten to specifications prior to cylinder bore honing. Use ONLY equal parts of kerosene and SAE 20 motor oil for honing cylinder bores. Use ONLY a spring-loaded type cylinder hone. After honing, allow cylinders to cool. Thoroughly clean bore with detergent and water solution.
- Rinse solution from bore thoroughly with clean water. Wipe bore clean with lint free cloth. Lubricate cylinder bores with engine oil. Tap cylinder head bolt threads in cylinder block.
PISTON & ROD ASSEMBLY
Ensure pistons and rods are marked with cylinder number prior to removal. Ensure notch or arrow on piston top and button on connecting rod faces front of engine. (Scheme 24) Match mark piston-to-rod prior to disassembly. Piston and rod pin must be pressed out. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article.

Check end gap and side clearance. Replace rings and/or piston as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATION tables at end of this article. Properly set ring end gap on piston. (Scheme 25)

FITTING PISTONS
- Check piston-to-bore clearance. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article. Standard size pistons are color coded Red, Blue or Yellow on the piston dome. See «PISTON SIZE CODES»(/ford/probe/i-1988-1992/remont/mechanical/#30l-v6-vin-u) table in this article.
- If bore diameter is in lower one-third of standard specifications, use a Red coded piston. If bore diameter is in middle one-third of standard specifications, use a Blue coded piston. If bore diameter is in upper one-third of standard specifications, use Yellow coded piston. The Yellow coded piston is .003" (.08 mm) oversize. Use proper size piston to acquire specified clearance.

PISTON SIZE CODES
CRANKSHAFT & BEARINGS
If replacing bearings with engine in vehicle, replace one journal at a time, leaving all other bearing caps tightened. Check crankshaft end play. Upper and lower bearing inserts are not interchangeable. Check crankshaft journals and bearing fit. Replace or machine as necessary. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of this article. Ensure main bearing caps are installed to original location and position.
CRANKSHAFT THRUST BEARING
Thrust bearing is located at No. 3 journal. Thrust bearing is a one-piece main bearing. To install thrust bearing, install all other main bearing caps. Install thrust bearing cap finger tight. To align thrust surfaces of both halves of bearing, pry crankshaft forward against thrust surface of upper half of bearing. Hold crankshaft forward and tighten cap bolts to 55-63 ft. lbs. (75-85 N.m). Recheck crankshaft end play.
ENGINE OILING SYSTEM
The lubrication is a force-feed type. The oil is supplied under full pressure to crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft bearing and valve lifters. A controlled volume of oil is supplied to rocker arms and push rods. All other moving parts are lubricated by splash or gravity flow.
Crankcase Capacity
Crankcase capacity is 4 qts. (3.79L) without oil filter and 4.5 qts. (4.26L) with oil filter. It is not recommended to change oil without filter.
Oil Pressure
Normal oil pressure should be 40-60 psi (2.8-4.2 kg/cm 2 ) at 2500 RPM with engine at normal operating temperature.
Oil pump is bolted to bottom of cylinder block, inside oil pan. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN for appropriate model in this article. Remove oil pump bolts, pump and shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove oil pump cover bolts. Remove oil pump cover and gasket. Check oil pump with specifications. See OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS table in this article. Replace components as necessary. The 3.0L engine oil pump does not need to be replaced as an assembly.
