Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA)

A Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) system is used on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. This system prevents the transmission selector lever from moving out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal is applied. When the BSIA is de-energized, the transmission selector lever is locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied, the BSIA is energized and the transmission selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.

Transmission Control Switch (TCS)

The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is a momentary contact switch that is located on the transmission selector lever. Pushing the TCS disengages or engages the overdrive function of the automatic transmission. If overdrive is disengaged, the icon overdrive OFF illuminates on the Instrument Cluster (IC).

1. A1 CHECK POWER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Selector Lever C307. Measure the voltage between selector lever C307-3, circuit CET53 (BU/OG), harness side and ground while applying and releasing the brake pedal. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the brake pedal applied and 0 volt with the brake pedal released? Yes: GO to A2 . No: REPAIR circuit CET53 (BU/OG). CLEAR the DTC. TEST the system for normal operation.
2. A2 CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between selector lever C307-1, circuit GD139 (BK/YE), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new selector lever assembly. REFER to «SELECTOR LEVER»(ref-439821-S39749763232011120900000) in this service information. CLEAR the DTC. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit GD139 (BK/YE) for an open. CLEAR the DTC. TEST the system for normal operation.

BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OVERRIDE

Note. If it is necessary to use the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) override procedure to move the selector lever out of the PARK position, it is possible that a fuse has blown and the brake lights are not operational. Before driving the vehicle, verify that the brake lights are working.

This vehicle is equipped with a BSIA feature that prevents the selector lever from being moved out of the PARK position when the ignition is in the ON position until the brake pedal is applied.

1. Apply the park brake and remove the ignition key.
2. Remove the access panel.
3. Using a suitable tool, push forward on the brake shift interlock override mechanism on the selector lever assembly, apply the brake pedal, press the button on the selector lever knob and move the selector lever into NEUTRAL.
4. Insert the ignition key into the ignition and start the vehicle.
5. Install the access panel.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-439777) article.
2. Place the transmission selector lever in the D position.
3. Lift the lock upward on the transmission selector cable lock and remove the transmission selector cable from the selector lever.
4. Place the transmission manual control lever in the D position by rotating the manual lever clockwise to the extent of travel, then rotate counterclockwise 3 detents.
5. Install the transmission selector lever cable on the selector lever and push the lock downward to lock the transmission selector lever cable adjustment lock.
