SELF-LEVELING - MODELS WITH AIR SUSPENSION
Note. Pre-alignment procedure on all models with air suspension should be performed before alignment or ride height is checked so air suspension system will vent to trim. If vehicle is 20°F (-7°C) or more colder or warmer than alignment area, time must be allowed for vehicle to match alignment area temperature.
- Position vehicle on alignment rack. Turn ignition to "OFF" and exit vehicle. Level rack as necessary. Re-enter vehicle and turn ignition to "RUN" ( DO NOT start).
- Allow one minute for vehicle to level. Push trunk release, turn off ignition and exit vehicle. Allow 20 seconds for vehicle to vent to trim height (all doors closed).
- Turn off air suspension system switch in trunk on left quarter panel. Check for proper ride height and alignment.
Scheme 1
Scheme 1: RIDE HEIGHT - MODELS WITH AIR SUSPENSION
- Perform «PRE-ALIGNMENT CHECKS»(/ford/ltd-crown-victoria/i-1983-1991/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures). Check front suspension ride height with vehicle on level surface. Measure dimension "C". (Scheme 1) If necessary, adjust front ride height by moving front left and/or right lower sensor attaching stud. (Scheme 1): Checking Air Suspension Riding Height (Continental & Mark VII)
- There are three adjustment positions provided on bracket. Loosen attaching bolt and adjust as necessary. A one position change to sensor attachment point will result in 1/2" change up or down.
- Rear suspension ride height is adjusted by moving rear sensor attaching bracket up or down relative to right rear arm (slot adjustment is provided on bracket). Loosen attaching nut and adjust up or down as required. One index mark change to sensor attachment point will result in 1/4" change up or down.
| Application | In. (mm) |
| Front | + .24 (6.0) |
| Rear | 5.06 (128.6) |
RIDING HEIGHT (CONTINENTAL & MARK VI)
RIDE HEIGHT - MODELS WITHOUT AIR SUSPENSION
- Before alignment, measure front suspension ride height. Set tire pressure to manufacturer's specifications. Jounce front of vehicle to settle suspension.
- DO NOT adjust new vehicle height if within 1/2" or used vehicle within 1/4" above specification. Check with full fuel tank and no luggage or passengers. Ride height should be within 1/4" side-to-side.
CASTER - CROWN VICTORIA, GRAND MARQUIS & TOWN CAR
Caster and camber angles are adjusted by repositioning the upper control arm shaft in its mounting holes. Use Adjustment Tools (T79P-2000-A) to aid in adjusting caster and camber angles.
CASTER - MUSTANG, T-BIRD, CONTINENTAL, MARK VII, COUGAR
Caster is factory set and cannot be changed. DO NOT attempt to adjust alignment by bending suspension or steering components. Check to verify that right and left caster angles are within 3/4°. If not, check for bent suspension arm and/or sidemember. Check underbody and fender wells for damage and/or reconstruction. Replace components as necessary.
CAMBER ADJUSTMENT - ALL MODELS
- If adjustment is required, remove pop-rivet in camber plate. Loosen 3 nuts which hold camber plate to body apron.
- Camber is adjusted by moving top of shock strut to desired position. Retighten nuts. It is not necessary to replace pop-rivet.
TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT
Note. DO NOT grip threads while loosening jam nut or tear rubber boot on tie rod during adjustment.
- Start engine (power steering only). Move steering wheel back and forth several times until wheel is centered. Turn off engine. Lock steering wheel into position with steering wheel holder.
- Loosen jam nuts on each tie rod assembly. Adjust toe. If steering wheel spokes are in their normal position, lengthen or shorten both tie rods equally to obtain correct toe.
- When toe and steering wheel spoke position are both correct, lubricate jam nuts and tighten. The jam nuts and boots on each side of vehicle must be positioned as shown in Fig. (Scheme 2).
