GENERAL INFORMATION
- Parking brake is released and transmission is in Neutral. If vehicle is towed with wheels on ground or with only rear end raised, steering column ignition lock must be in unlocked position. Secure steering wheel with a clamping device. CAUTION: Do not use vehicle's steering column lock to keep wheels in a straight ahead position.
- Secure steering wheel with a clamping device. Never attach tow chain or "J" hooks to any drive axle shaft, drive shaft or bumper. Do not lift or tow vehicle by attaching hooks to bumper energy absorber units.
- Always refer to instructions provided by manufacturer of hoisting equipment. If vehicle has been damaged, secure all loose or protruding parts. Cross all curbs at 45° angles.
- Towed vehicles should be raised until lifted wheels are at least 4" off ground. Brake drums and rotors should have at least 8" clearance. Make sure there is adequate ground clearance at opposite end of vehicle.

Towing Precautions
- As a general rule, vehicles should be pulled with driving wheels off the ground.
- If vehicle is to be towed on its drive wheels, transmission and differential must be operable. If not, place wheels on a dolly, or disconnect drive shaft (except FWD vehicle).
- If ignition key is not available, place a dolly underneath driving wheels of vehicle, and tow with non-driving wheels raised. A wide-belt sling should be used to avoid damage to chrome and lower body panels.
Towing Speeds
- When necessary to tow vehicle with driving wheels on ground, do not exceed 35 MPH and/or a distance of 50 miles or transmission damage may result.
- Limit towing speed to 50 MPH with driving wheels off the ground. On rough pavement, maximum towing speed is 35 MPH.
- On vehicles equipped with air suspension, turn suspension switch located in trunk on left-hand trunk lid hinge support to "OFF" position. For Thunderbird, switch is located on the left side of steering column.
