The manual interior rear view mirror can be adjusted from a day position to a night position to reduce unwanted glare caused by headlamps from behind the vehicle. Adjusting the interior mirror is accomplished by using the day/night tab, located on the bottom of the interior mirror. Pulling the tab rearward, towards the driver, adjusts the mirror to the night position. Pushing the tap forward, away from the driver, adjusts the mirror to the day position.
Interior, Auto-Dimming
The interior auto-dimming interior mirror automatically darkens to reduce the glare caused by headlamps reflecting in the mirror from behind the vehicle. The auto-dimming feature is active any time the ignition is on and the amount of dimming will vary with different ambient lighting conditions.
The auto-dimming interior mirror uses 2 photoelectric sensors. The forward facing sensor located on the front of the mirror (facing the windshield) is used to detect ambient lighting conditions. The rearward facing sensor, located at the top of the mirror glass (facing the driver) is used to detect glare from behind the vehicle during nighttime conditions. When the forward facing sensor detects daytime conditions, the rearward facing sensor is inactive and the mirror stays in a high reflectance mode. When the forward facing sensor detects nighttime conditions, the rearward facing sensor is active and detects glare from the headlights of vehicles approaching from the rear, or other glare producing light sources. To provide increased visibility when backing up, the interior rear view mirror automatically returns to a clear state whenever the vehicle is in reverse.
Exterior Mirror Control Switch
The exterior mirror control switch is a momentary contact switch that is integral to the master window control switch. The exterior mirror control switch also uses a rocker-type selection switch to allow the driver to determine which exterior mirror will be adjusted.
Exterior Mirror
Each exterior mirror has 2 bi-directional motors that are used to control the up, down, left and right movement of the exterior mirror glass.
The exterior mirrors use a jumper harness between the vehicle wiring harness and the exterior mirror motors. The exterior mirror jumper harness is integral to the exterior mirror. Before replacing an exterior mirror or motor, inspect the jumper harness for opens, shorted circuits or damaged and pushed-out pins. If a concern with the exterior mirror jumper harness exists, attempt to repair the jumper harness.
Overview - Exterior, Power
The power mirror system allows the LH and RH exterior mirror glass to be positioned electronically. The position of the exterior mirror glass is controlled by the exterior mirror control switch and the LH or RH mirror selection switch determines which exterior mirror glass is controlled.
Overview - Exterior, Heated
The exterior mirrors are available with heated mirror glass, which heats the mirror glass to remove frost, snow, ice and condensation. The heated exterior mirror glass only operates when the rear window defrost system is active.
Overview - Exterior, Memory
The memory mirror feature allows the driver to store and recall the preferred positioning of the LH and RH exterior mirror glass. The preferred positioning of the driver seat and exterior mirrors can be associated with a numbered memory preset button, RKE transmitter or passive entry key (if equipped).
Overview - Interior
The interior rear view mirror manually or automatically darkens to reduce the glare of headlights from behind the vehicle during nighttime conditions.
The vehicle may be equipped with one of the following interior rear view mirrors
- Manual interior day/night rear view mirror with dual pivot adjustment
- Auto-dimming interior rear view mirror with single pivot adjustment
The interior rear view mirror mounts to the bracket at the upper center of the windshield glass. The mirror can be adjusted left, right, up and down. The dual pivot mirror can be positioned higher or lower to accommodate different driver statures by adjusting the support arm up or down at the pivot closest to the windshield.

Memory Mirror Positioning
When a memory recall or save is initiated, the DSM sends a message to the DDM and PDM through the MS-CAN . Based on this message, the DDM and PDM recall the requested memory preset mirror position or save the current mirror position to the requested preset. During a memory recall, the DDM and PDM supply voltage and ground to the appropriate exterior mirror motors to achieve the desired memory positions based on feedback from the mirror motor potentiometers. If the exterior mirror control switch is activated in any direction during a memory recall, the recall is aborted and the selected exterior mirror responds to the switch inputs.
A memory recall can be initiated by the memory set switch, RKE transmitter or passive key (if equipped). When a preset button is pressed momentarily on the memory set switch, the memory position corresponding to the button that was pressed will be recalled by the driver seat and the exterior mirrors. When the vehicle is unlocked with an RKE transmitter or the LH front door is opened with an passive key in range, the positioning of the driver seat and exterior mirrors that were last used with that specific RKE transmitter or passive key will be recalled.
A memory save can be initiated by pressing and holding a preset button on the memory set switch with the driver seat and exterior mirrors set to the desired positions. The driver seat and exterior mirror positions can also be associated with a specific RKE transmitter or passive key by turning the ignition off with the driver seat and exterior mirrors set to the positions that the operator would like to associate with the RKE transmitter or passive key that is currently in use.

The exterior mirror control switch is integral to the master window control switch and connected to the DDM through a LIN circuit. The exterior mirror control switch incorporates a selection switch to allow the driver to determine which exterior mirror is adjusted.
Each exterior mirror has 2 bi-directional motors that are used to control the position of the exterior mirror glass.
If equipped with heated exterior mirrors, the heating elements are integral to the exterior mirror glass.
If equipped with memory mirrors, each exterior mirror motor is equipped with an integral potentiometer that is monitored by the DDM ( LH mirror) or PDM ( RH mirror) to determine the position of the exterior mirror glass.
The exterior mirrors use a jumper harness between the vehicle wiring harness and the components inside the exterior mirror housing. The exterior mirror jumper harness is integral to the exterior mirror. Before replacing an exterior mirror or motor, inspect the jumper harness for opens, shorted circuits or damaged and pushed-out pins. If a concern with the exterior mirror jumper harness exists, attempt to repair the jumper harness.
DDM
For the power mirror function, the DDM receives mirror movement requests through the LIN circuit from the master window control switch. When the LH exterior mirror is selected, the DDM provides voltage and ground to the appropriate LH exterior mirror motor to drive the mirror glass in the desired direction.
If the vehicle is equipped with heated exterior mirrors, the DDM supplies voltage to the LH exterior mirror glass heating element based on messages received the BCM .
If the vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors the DDM monitors the potentiometers in the LH exterior mirror to determine the position of the exterior mirror glass. Preset memory positions for the LH exterior mirror glass are stored in the DDM
When a concern exists, the DDM is capable of setting and storing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for the LH exterior mirror motor drive circuits, position sensor circuits (if equipped) and mirror heater circuit (if equipped).
PDM
When the RH exterior mirror is selected, the PDM supplies voltage and ground to the appropriate RH exterior mirror motor to drive the mirror glass in the desired direction based on messages received from the DDM through the MS-CAN .
If the vehicle is equipped with heated exterior mirrors, the PDM supplies voltage to the RH exterior mirror glass heating element based on messages received the BCM .
If the vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors the PDM monitors the potentiometers in the RH exterior mirror to determine the position of the exterior mirror glass. Preset memory positions for the RH exterior mirror glass are stored in the DDM

Since it is possible any one of multiple systems may be the cause of a symptom, it may be necessary to use a process of elimination type of diagnostic approach to pinpoint the responsible system. If this is not the causal system for the symptom, identify the next likely system and continue diagnosis. Refer to: NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH) .

- D1 CHECK THE EXTERIOR MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH NOTE: If the TR sensor is malfunctioning and the backup lamps are on all the time or do not turn on, the interior auto-dimming mirror will not darken or return to normal view. Ignition ON. While observing the reversing lamps, move the selector lever through the entire range. Do the reversing lamps illuminate only when the selector lever is in reverse? Yes : GO to D2 No : Refer to: «REVERSING LAMPS»(ref-658877-S08383540302014092900000) .
- D2 VERIFY THE FORWARD AND REARWARD FACING SENSORS ARE NOT BLOCKED Inspect the interior auto-dimming mirror to make sure the rearward facing sensor is at the top of the mirror glass. Visually verify the forward and rearward facing sensors are not blocked. Some sources of blockage can include Stickers, window decals or tags. Fold-down screens for TVs or DVD players. Non-OEM window tinting. Are both sensors free from obstructions and correctly oriented? Yes : GO to D3 No : If a blockage is present, REMOVE the blockage if possible. If it is not possible to remove the blockage, ADVISE the customer that the blockage will affect the correct operation of the interior auto-dimming mirror. If the sensors are not oriented correctly, REMOVE and INSTALL the interior auto-dimming mirror with the rearward facing sensor at the top of the mirror glass. - D3 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR - DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS Select PARK. Simulate daylight conditions by using a bright lamp to illuminate the forward and rearward facing sensors. The mirror should adjust to a high reflectance mode (mirror will be clear). Does the mirror adjust to the high reflectance (clear) mode? Yes : GO to D4 No : INSTALL a new interior auto-dimming mirror. Refer to: «INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR»(ref-658938-S12303982872014092900000) .
- D4 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR - NIGHTTIME CONDITIONS WITHOUT GLARE NOTE: Covering the sensor with a finger or hand is not adequate. Simulate nighttime conditions without glare by using black electrical tape or other dark material to cover the forward and rearward facing sensors. The mirror should adjust to a high reflectance mode (mirror will be clear). Does the mirror adjust to the high reflectance (clear) mode? Simulate nighttime conditions without glare by using black electrical tape or other dark material to cover the forward facing sensor while illuminating the rearward facing sensor. The mirror should adjust to a low reflectance mode (mirror will be darkened). Does the mirror adjust to the low reflectance (darkened) mode? Yes : GO to D6 No : GO to D7
- D6 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR - NIGHTTIME CONDITIONS WITH GLARE AND THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE NOTE: Covering the sensor with a finger or hand is not adequate. Simulate nighttime conditions without glare by using black electrical tape or other dark material to cover the forward facing sensor while illuminating the rearward facing sensor. The mirror should adjust to a low reflectance mode (mirror will be darkened). Select REVERSE. Does the mirror adjust to the high reflectance (clear) mode after reverse is selected? Yes : The system is operating correctly at this time. REVIEW operation of the interior auto-dimming mirror feature with the customer. No : GO to D9
- D7 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR Select PARK. Ignition OFF. Disconnect Interior Auto-Dimming Mirror C911 . Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C911-1 Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to D8 No : VERIFY BCM fuse 41 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-653475) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- D8 CHECK FOR GROUND AT THE INTERIOR AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C911-1 C911-2 Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to D9 No : REPAIR the circuit.
- D9 CHECK THE REVERSE INHIBIT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE AT THE AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C911-3 Ground Select REVERSE. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts with the selector lever in reverse and no voltage present when the selector lever is in park? Yes : INSTALL a new interior auto-dimming mirror. Refer to: «INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR»(ref-658938-S12303982872014092900000) . No : REPAIR the circuit.
Component Tests
Check for component-side continuity of the exterior mirror control switch pins while actuating the switch as directed in the chart below. The pins shown in the chart below should have continuity when the switch is pressed as directed and no continuity when the switch is released.
