Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The interior lighting system consists of the following components

  1. SJB
  2. Instrument panel dimmer switch
  3. Interior/map lamps
  4. Door ajar switches
  5. Luggage compartment lamp
  6. Luggage compartment lid latch
  7. Ambient lighting module (if equipped)
  8. Ambient lighting switch (if equipped) (part of the passenger air bag deactivation [PAD] indicator)
  9. Ambient lighting lamps (if equipped)

The interior lighting system may consist of up to 3 subsystems

  1. Courtesy lamps
  2. Demand lamps
  3. Ambient lighting (if equipped)

The courtesy lamps are controlled by the SJB. The courtesy lamp subsystem consists of the interior/map lamps. The SJB turns on the courtesy lamps when a door is opened. The courtesy lamps also turn on when an unlock signal is received from the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter.

The demand lamps system consists of the front dome map lamps. The SJB controls the demand lamps by providing ground for the battery saver relay.

The ambient lighting system consists of the ambient lighting switch, the ambient lighting module, and the harness with hard-wired LEDs all located within the floor console. The ambient lighting is turned on by the headlamp switch. Whenever the parking lamps are on (early build vehicles), or the ignition key is in the ACCESSORY or RUN position (late build vehicles) power is supplied to the ambient lighting module. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle the LEDs through 7 different color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting off. The ambient lighting module provides the necessary voltage to the LEDs to illuminate the cup holders (front and rear) and the front and rear footwell areas.

Principles of Operation

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The SJB supplies voltage to the interior lighting system. The interior lighting system illuminates the courtesy lamps to enhance visibility of the interior while a vehicle door is ajar, and the vehicle speed is less than 15 km/h (9 mph). The SJB controls all interior lighting functions and timing by monitoring inputs from the door ajar switches, the instrument panel dimmer switch, and the vehicle speed.

Normal Operation

Voltage is supplied to the courtesy lamps by the smart junction box (SJB) fuse 9 (15A). When the SJB receives a request for the courtesy lamps the SJB energizes the solid-state relay supplying voltage to the courtesy lamps on circuit VLN33 (GY/VT). Ground for the courtesy lamps is supplied through circuit GD133 (BK).

  1. DTC B2A35 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Open) - is an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects an open from the interior lighting circuit.
  2. DTC B2A36 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Short to Ground) - is a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects a short to ground from the interior lighting circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Fuse
  2. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  3. Interior lamp
  4. SJB

The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the trunk ajar status on circuit CPL58 (GY/OG). The trunk ajar switch is a integral part of the luggage compartment lid latch. The switch is normally closed when the luggage compartment is closed, and is open when the luggage compartment is open. The ajar switch controls the ground side of the luggage compartment lamp on circuit CLN13 (WH/BU). The luggage compartment ajar switch is grounded through circuit GD110 (BK/WH). Voltage is supplied to the luggage compartment lamp through circuit CLN09 (YE/GN).

  1. DTC B1331 (Decklid Ajar Rear Door Circuit Failure) - is an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects an open from the decklid or rear door ajar circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Luggage compartment lid latch
  3. Luggage compartment lamp
  4. SJB

The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the door ajar switch status on circuits CPL26 (GN/VT) (LH front), CPL36 (GN)/CPL39 (YE) (LH rear), CPL31 (WH) (RH front) and CPL39 (YE) (RH rear). The door ajar switches are normally closed when the doors are closed. When the SJB determines a door is open, the SJB then controls the voltage side of the interior lamp on circuit VLN33 (GY/VT) to illuminate the interior lamp.

The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the door ajar switch status on circuits CPL26 (GN/VT) (LH front), CPL36 (GN)/CPL39 (YE) (LH rear), CPL31 (WH) (RH front) and CPL39 (YE) (RH rear). The door ajar switches are normally closed when the doors are closed. When the SJB determines a door is open, the SJB then controls the voltage side of the interior lamp on circuit VLN33 (GY/VT) to illuminate the interior lamp.

The smart junction box (SJB) supplies voltage to the demand lamps on circuit CLN09 (YE/GN). The demand lamps are grounded through circuit GD133 (BK).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  2. Interior/map lamps
  3. SJB

The smart junction box (SJB) provides a battery saver function. The battery saver function provides automatic shutoff of the interior lamps (demand lamps, and luggage compartment lamp) after a predetermined time has elapsed in order to save battery power.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals, or connectors
  2. SJB

When the parking lamps are on (early build vehicles), or the ignition key is in the ACCESSORY or RUN position (late build vehicles), the ambient lighting module supplies voltage and ground to the LEDs located in the floor console cup holders and the front and rear footwells. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle through the 7 color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting feature off. There are 3 different color (red, blue and green) LEDs housed within each LED assembly.

When the parking lamps are on (early build vehicles), or the ignition key is in the ACCESSORY or RUN position (late build vehicles), the ambient lighting switch and the ambient lighting module receives voltage through circuit CBB23 (BN/YE)/CBX07 (GN/RD). Ground for the ambient lighting module is provided through circuit GD908 (BK)/GD138 (BK/WH). When the ambient lighting switch is pressed, voltage is routed to the ambient lighting module through circuit CLN12 (YE)/CLN54 (BN/YE), indicating a request for the module to cycle the ambient lighting to the next setting.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Fuse
  2. Wiring, terminals, or connectors
  3. Ambient lighting switch
  4. Ambient lighting harness
  5. Ambient lighting module

When the parking lamps are on (early build vehicles), or the ignition key is in the ACCESSORY or RUN position (late build vehicles), the ambient lighting module supplies voltage and ground to the LEDs located in the floor console cup holders and the front and rear footwells. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle through the 7 color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting feature off. There are 3 different color (red, blue and green) LEDs housed within each LED assembly.

Ground for the ambient lighting module is provided through circuit GD908 (BK)/GD138 (BK/WH). When the ambient lighting switch is pressed, voltage is routed to the ambient lighting module through circuit CLN12 (YE)/CLN54 (BN/YE), indicating a request for the module to cycle the ambient lighting to the next setting.

  2. Ambient lighting switch
  3. Ambient lighting harness
  4. Ambient lighting module

The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the instrument panel dimmer switch status on circuit CLN28 (GN/BU) to determine if the courtesy lamps are requested. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the dome detent, ground is supplied to circuit CLN28 (GN/BU). Based on the dimmer switch status, the SJB supplies voltage to the courtesy lamps through circuit VLN33 (GY/VT).
