Removal

WARNINGAlways wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNINGNever probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNINGTo reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.

Note. If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be disabled.

Note. The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.

Note. The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

  3. Invert the backrest trim cover to access the lower ends of the tension rods. Detach the lower ends of the tension rods from the backrest.
  4. Invert the backrest trim cover to expose the entire seat backrest heater mat.
  5. If the seat backrest heater mat shows no signs of damage, does not require any new parts or is not subject to any other repair, adhesion reinforcement can be carried out. See «INSTALLATION»(ref-207809-S25974673842005120100000) for adhesion reinforcement.
  6. Inspect the seat backrest heater mat to see if it has not adhered correctly or is partially folded together. If so it can be smoothed out and re-adhered. See «INSTALLATION»(ref-207809-S25974673842005120100000) .
  7. Inspect the seat backrest heater mat to see if it is completely folded. If it is completely folded, a new seat backrest heater mat must be installed.
  8. If a new heater mat is needed, slowly and carefully peel the heater mat adhesive strip from the backrest foam pad. If the foam pad begins to tear or if the adhesive is not separating cleanly from the backrest foam pad, stop and try to separate the other end of the adhesive strip from the backrest foam pad. If necessary, use a razor or other sharp knife to trim the heater mat from the foam pad.

  1. If the seat backrest heater mat shows no signs of damage, does not require any new parts or is not subject to any other repair, carry out the following for adhesion reinforcement of the seat backrest heater mat. CAUTION: Apply only enough adhesive to properly bond the heater mat to the foam pad. Applying too much adhesive can result in adhesive bleeding through to the seat trim cover. Apply the adhesive in a strip no more than 25 mm (0.98 in) wide, along the outer edges of the heater mat and on the mating surfaces of the foam pad, to make sure no adhesive is applied under the heater mat wire. Also, do not apply adhesive to an existing adhesive strip on the heater mat itself. Poor adhesion will result. Neatly apply adhesive on the side edges of the heater mat and the mating surface on the foam pad. Press the edges down, while smoothing the heater mat down, to avoid wrinkling or puckering. Allow the adhesive to dry for 5 minutes before assembling the seat. Test the edges to make sure they adhere well enough to avoid pulling the heater mat up when the trim cover is reinstalled.
  2. If the seat backrest heater mat is not adhered properly or is partially folded, carry out the following: Unfold and smooth out the heater mat. On the loose end of the heater mat, check the adhesive strip to see if the backing was ever removed to expose the adhesive. If the backing is still present, peel it off, position the heater mat in its original position and press down along the adhesive strip to secure the heater mat to the foam pad. Neatly apply adhesive on the entire top and bottom edges of the heater mat, forward of the adhesive strip and on the mating surface on the foam pad. Pull the heater mat into position and press the top and bottom edges down to adhere them to the foam pad Neatly apply adhesive on the side edges of the heater mat and the mating surface on the foam pad.
  3. Install a new seat backrest heater mat. Position the heater mat onto the foam pad, feeding the wire harness through the hole in the foam pad. Remove the paper strips covering the adhesive before adhering the heater mat to the foam pad. Neatly apply adhesive to all 4 edges of the heater mat and the mating surface on the foam pad.
  4. Roll the backrest trim cover down. Attach the lower ends of the tension rods to the backrest.
  5. Attach the backrest trim cover J-strip from the underside of the backrest.
  6. If equipped, install the seat back lumbar support adjust lever.

Note. Some seat cushion heater mats can become loose or folded. Read and follow all the instructions in this procedure to correctly repair a loose or folded seat cushion heater mat. If referred here from Diagnosis and Testing or to install a new seat cushion heater mat, follow only those steps that apply.
