Inspection And Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Electrical Fuse(s) Wiring harness Loose or corroded connectors Ignition switch Turn signal/flash-to-pass switch Wiper/washer switch
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step. NOTE: Make sure all electrical diagnosis in the pinpoint tests are carried out using a digital multimeter.
  4. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the. «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-207746-S09776176542005120100000)

SYMPTOM

PINPOINT TEST A: THE IGNITION SWITCH IS INOPERATIVE

A1 THE IGNITION SWITCH IS INOPERATIVE

  1. Disconnect: Fuse 8 (30A).
  2. Check fuse 8 (30A).
  3. Is the fuse OK?

Yes

GO to A2.

No

INSTALL a new fuse 8 (30A). TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse fails again CHECK for short to ground on circuit 30 (RD).

A2 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH CONNECTOR

  1. Remove the steering column shrouds and check the ignition switch connector.
  2. Is the ignition switch connector clean and secure?

Yes

GO to A3.

No

CLEAN and SECURE the ignition switch connector as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

A3 CHECK CIRCUIT 30 (RD) FOR OPEN

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Connect: Fuse 8 (30A).
  2. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
  3. Measure the voltage between the ignition switch C250 pin 4, circuit 30 (RD), and ground.
  4. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts??

Yes

GO to A4.

No

REPAIR circuit 30 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation.

A4 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

  1. Carry out the ignition switch component test. For additional information, refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-224862) .
  2. Is the ignition switch OK?

Yes

VERIFY the customer concern.

No

INSTALL a new ignition switch. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B: NO POWER IN ACC

B1 CHECK FUSE 50 (7.5A)

  1. Disconnect: Fuse 50 (7.5A).
  2. CHECK fuse 50 (7.5A).
  3. Is the fuse OK?

Yes

GO to B2.

No

INSTALL a new fuse. TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse fails again CHECK for short to ground on either the central timer module pin 14, or circuits 75 (YE/GN) and 75 (YE/BU).

B2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT FUSE 50 (7.5A)

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Key in ACCESSORY position.
  2. Measure the voltage between fuse 50 (7.5A) pin 1, circuit 75 (YE) and ground.
  3. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

GO to B3.

No

REPAIR circuit 75 (YE). TEST the system for normal operation.

B3 CHECK THE CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX (CJB) FOR CONTINUITY

  1. Key in OFF position.
  2. Disconnect: CJB C270b.
  3. Measure the resistance between CJB C270b pin 9, and fuse 50 (7.5A) pin 2.
  4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

GO to B4.

No

INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

B4 CHECK CIRCUIT 75 (YE) FOR OPEN

  1. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
  2. Measure the resistance between fuse 50 (7.5A) pin 1, circuit 75 (YE) and ignition switch C250 pin 6, circuit 75 (YE).
  3. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

GO to B5.

No

REPAIR circuit 75 (YE). TEST the system for normal operation.

B5 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

  1. Carry out the ignition switch component test. For additional information, refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-224862) .
  2. Is the ignition switch OK?

Yes

VERIFY the customer concern.

No

INSTALL a new ignition switch. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST C: NO POWER IN RUN

C1 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUITS 15 (GN/BU) AND 15 GN/YE)

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Disconnect: Ignition Relay C1054.
  2. Key in ON position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the ignition relay C1054 pin 1, circuits 15 (GN/BU) and 15 (GN/YE) and ground.
  4. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

GO to C2.

No

GO to C7.

C2 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 30 (RD)

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Key in OFF position.
  2. Measure the voltage between the ignition relay C1054 pin 3, circuit 30 (RD) and ground.
  3. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

GO to C3.

No

REPAIR circuit 30 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation.

C3 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 91 (BK/RD)

  1. Measure the resistance between the ignition relay C1054 pin 2, circuit 91 (BK/RD), and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

GO to C4, Vehicles with Air Conditioning. GO to C5, Vehicles without Air Conditioning.

No

REPAIR circuit 91 (BK/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.

C4 CHECK FUSE F1 (40A)

  1. Disconnect: Fuse 1 (40A).
  2. Check fuse 1 (40A).
  3. Is the fuse OK?

Yes

GO to C6.

No

INSTALL a new fuse. TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse fails again CHECK for short to ground on circuit 15 (GN/RD).

C5 CHECK FUSE F84 (30A)

  1. Disconnect: Fuse F84 (30A).
  2. Check fuse F84 (30A).
  3. Is the fuse OK?

Yes

GO to C8.

No

INSTALL a new fuse. TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuse fails again CHECK for short to ground on circuit 15 (GN/OG).

C6 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 15 (GN/RD)

  1. Connect: Fuse 1 (40A).
  2. Connect: Ignition Relay.
  3. Disconnect: Fuse 53 (10A).
  4. Key in ON position.
  5. Measure the voltage between fuse 53 (10A) pin 1, circuit 15 (GN/RD) and ground.
  6. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

GO to C8.

No

GO to C9.

C7 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

  1. Carry out the ignition switch component test. For additional information, refer to the «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-224862)
  2. Does the ignition switch test OK?

Yes

REPAIR circuit 15 (GN/BU) or 15 (GN/YE).

No

INSTALL a new ignition switch. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.

C8 TEST THE IGNITION RELAY

  1. Test the ignition relay. For additional information, refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-224862) .
  2. Is the relay OK?

Yes

GO to C9.

No

INSTALL a new relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

C9 CHECK THE CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX (CJB) FOR CONTINUITY

  1. Disconnect: CJB C270g.
  2. Measure the resistance between CJB C270g pin 1, circuit 15 (GN/RD) and fuse 53 (10A) pin 1, circuit 15 (GN/RD).
  3. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

REPAIR circuit 15 (GN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.

No

INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST D: NO POWER IN START

D1 IS THERE AN AUDIBLE CLICK FROM THE START LOCK RELAY WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO THE START POSITION?

  1. Key in START position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Does the start lock relay click?

Yes

GO to D2.

No

GO to D5.

D2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE ON STARTER MOTOR CONNECTOR C120

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Disconnect: Starter Motor C1046.
  2. Key in START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the starter motor C1046, circuit 50 (GY) (C120, circuit 50S [GY], automatic transaxle only), and ground.
  4. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

REFER to Starting System. For additional information, refer to STARTERS .

No

GO to D3.

D3 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 50 (GY) OR 50S (GY)

  1. Key in OFF position.
  2. Disconnect: Start Lock Relay.
  3. Measure the resistance between the start lock relay C2163 pin 5, circuit 50 (GY) and starter motor C1046 circuit 50 (GY) (C1046 circuit 50S [GY], automatic transaxle only).
  4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

GO to D4.

No

REPAIR circuit 50 (GY) or 50S (GY). TEST the system for normal operation.

D4 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 30 (RD)

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Measure the voltage between the start lock relay C2163 pin 3, circuit 30 (RD) and ground.
  2. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

TEST the start lock relay. For additional information, refer to COMPONENT TESTING .

No

REPAIR circuit 30 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation.

D5 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 50 (GY/BK)

Note. Make sure the ground contact is clean before testing.

  1. Disconnect: Start Lock Relay.
  2. Key in START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the start lock relay C2163 pin 1, circuit 50 (GY/BK) and ground.
  4. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

GO to D6.

No

Go to D7.

D6 CHECK FOR OPEN ON CIRCUIT 31S (BK/RD)

  1. Key in OFF position.
  2. Disconnect: CJB C270b.
  3. Measure the resistance between the start lock relay C2163 pin 2, circuit 31S (BK/RD) and the central junction box (CJB) C270b pin 3, circuit 31S (BK/RD).
  4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

TEST the start lock relay. For additional information, refer to COMPONENT TESTING . If the relay tests OK, GO to Electronic Engine Controls. For additional information, refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS .

No

INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

D7 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

  1. Carry out the ignition switch component test. For additional information, refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-224862) .
  2. Does the ignition switch test OK?

Yes

REPAIR circuit 15 (GN/YE). TEST the system for normal operation.

No

INSTALL a new ignition switch. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.

  1. Disable the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-170306) .
  2. Detach the instrument panel lower panel. Remove the screws. Release the fastener.
  3. Remove the instrument panel lower panel. Disconnect the hood release. Disconnect the data link (DLC) electrical connector.
  4. Detach the steering column upper shroud. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the two clips (one each side).
  5. Remove the steering column lower shroud. Release the steering column locking lever. (if equipped). Remove the screws. Remove the ignition key.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector. Disconnect the turn signal/flash-to-pass switch electrical connector.
  7. Remove the ignition switch. Release the clips.
