Power Window: Diagnosis Ford Focus I

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Verify customer concern by operating windows to duplicate condition. Ensure window(s) in question is properly aligned. Check for damaged track or regulator mechanism, malfunctioning window motor, damaged wiring, damaged control switches, poor electrical connections and blown fuses. Repair as necessary. If no problems were found, repair power windows by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.

TEST C: ONE-TOUCH DOWN FEATURE IS INOPERATIVE (FRONT & REAR)

  1. Test driver's power window control switch. See «DRIVER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH (2-DOOR)»(ref-99683-S07063893042001072600000) or «DRIVER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH (4-DOOR)»(ref-99683-S17703372702001072600000) . If any other power window is inoperative, go to next step. If driver's power window control switch is okay, replace driver's power window motor. If driver's power window control switch is faulty, replace driver's power window control switch.
  2. Connect driver's power window control switch harness connector. Remove power window control switch at inoperative window. See «POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-99683-S15885034972001072600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test power window control switch. See «PASSENGER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-99683-S00882824212001072600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If power window control switch is okay, replace power window motor. If power window control switch is faulty, replace power window control switch.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse F56 (25-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is faulty, replace fuse. If fuse fails again, repair short to ground in Green/Blue wire between CJB and driver's power window control switch.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and CJB fuse F56 (25-amp) power supply side. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 7.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect driver's power window control switch harness connector C488. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and driver's power window control switch harness connector C488 terminal No. 15 (Green/Blue wire). (Scheme 1) If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short to ground in Green/Blue wire between CJB and driver's power window control switch.
  4. Measure voltage between driver's power window control switch harness connector C488 terminals No. 15 (Green/Blue wire) and No. 5 (Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Green/Blue wire or Black wire. Retest system operation. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-99683-S22943880692001072600000).
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect passenger's power window control switch harness connector C489. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and passenger's power window control switch harness connector C489 terminal No. 2. see scheme 4 If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short in Green/White wire between CJB and driver's power window control switch.
  6. Measure voltage in Green/White wire between passenger's power window control switch harness connector C489 terminals No. 2 (Green/White wire) and terminal No. 4 (Black wire). If battery voltage exists, verify customer concern. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Green/White wire or Black wire as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-99683-S22943880692001072600000).
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse F1 (40-amp). If fuse is okay, repair open in Green/Red wire and retest system operation. If fuse is faulty, replace fuse. If fuse fails again, repair short to ground in Green/Red wire between BJB and CJB.

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Operate driver's power window control switch to first detent. If one-touch down relay clicks, go to next step. If one-touch down relay does not click, go to step 5.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect driver's power window motor harness connector C782. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and driver's power window motor harness connector C782 terminal No. 2 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 7.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and driver's power window motor harness connector C782 terminal No. 1 (Yellow wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 8.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance across driver's power window motor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, verify customer concern. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace driver's power window motor. Retest system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect one-touch down relay. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 3 (Green/Black wire). (Scheme 2) If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 9.
  6. Measure voltage between ground and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 2 (Green/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, replace one-touch down relay, and retest system operation. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short to ground in Green/Black wire between Central Junction Box (CJB) and one-touch down relay.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in White wire between driver's power window motor harness connector C782 and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 5. (Scheme 2) If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between one-touch down relay and CJB. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace one-touch down relay. Retest system operation.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect driver's power window control switch harness connector C488. Measure resistance in Yellow wire between driver's power window control switch harness connector C488 terminal No. 9 and driver's power window motor harness connector C782 terminal No. 1. (Scheme 1) If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow wire between driver's power window control switch and driver's power window motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's power window motor. Retest system operation.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect driver's power window control switch harness connector C488. Measure resistance in Green/Black wire between driver's power window control switch harness connector C488 terminal No. 11 and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 3. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Green/Black wire and between driver's power window control switch and one-touch down relay. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's power window control switch. Retest system operation.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect passenger's power window control switch harness connector C489. Test passenger's power window control switch. See «PASSENGER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-99683-S00882824212001072600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If passenger's power window control switch is okay, go to next step. If passenger's power window control switch is faulty, replace passenger's power window control switch. Retest system operation.
  2. Connect passenger's power window control switch harness connector C489. Disconnect passenger's power window motor harness connector C783. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and passenger's power window motor harness connector C783 terminal No. 2 (White/Violet wire) while pressing passenger's power window control switch to down position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short to ground in White/Violet wire between passenger's power window motor and passenger's power window control switch.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and passenger's power window motor harness connector C783 terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Violet wire) while pressing passenger's power window control switch to up position. If battery voltage exists, replace passenger's power window motor and retest system operation. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short to ground in Yellow/Violet wire between passenger's power window motor and passenger's power window control switch.

TEST G: ONE-TOUCH DOWN FEATURE INOPERATIVE (2-DOOR)

Note. On early production vehicles, one-touch down relay is located behind driver's door trim panel. On late production vehicles relay is integral to driver's power window control switch.

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Operate one-touch down switch function. If one-touch down relay clicks, go to next step. If one-touch down relay does not click, go to step 3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect driver's power window motor harness connector C782. Disconnect one-touch down relay harness connector C738. Measure resistance in White wire between driver's power window motor harness connector C782 terminal No. 2 and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 5. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, verify customer concern. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire between driver's power window motor and one-touch down relay.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect one-touch down relay harness connector C738. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Operate one-touch down switch function. Measure voltage between ground and one-touch down relay harness connector C738 terminal No. 3 (Green/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 5.
  4. Operate one-touch down switch function. Measure voltage between ground and one-touch down relay connector C738 terminal No. 4 (Green/Black wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace one-touch down relay. Retest system operation.
  5. Test driver's window control switch. See «DRIVER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH (2-DOOR)»(ref-99683-S07063893042001072600000) or «DRIVER'S POWER WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH (4-DOOR)»(ref-99683-S17703372702001072600000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If driver's power window control switch is okay, repair open or short in Green/Black wire or Black wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-99683-S22943880692001072600000). If driver's power window control switch is faulty, replace driver's power window control switch. Retest system operation.
