Overview
The interior lighting system consists of
- Courtesy lamps
- Demand lamps
- Ambient lighting (if equipped)
The courtesy lamps subsystem consists of
- Interior lamps (roof mounted and front footwells)
- Puddle lamps
- Door ajar switches (integrated into the door latches)
- Courtesy lamp switch (integrated into the front interior lamp)
- DDM
- PDM
- BCM
The courtesy lamps provide illumination to the interior of the vehicle (and below the exterior mirrors if equipped with puddle lamps) when entering or exiting the vehicle or when requested using the courtesy lamp switch located on the front/driver interior lamp.
The demand lamps subsystem consists of
- Interior lamps (map lamps)
- Vanity mirror lamps
- Luggage compartment lamp
- BCM
The demand lamps provide illumination to specific areas within the vehicle when needed.
The BCM energizes the interior light relay to supply voltage to the demand lamps when the battery saver feature is not active.
The ambient lighting subsystem consists of
- Ambient lighting Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
- Ambient lighting module (integrated into the overhead console)
- Ambient lighting switches (integrated into the overhead console)
The ambient lighting provides aesthetically colored illumination to the center console cup holders, the door map pockets, the overhead console, the door release handles, and the front footwells for illuminated entry or when the ignition is in RUN with the parking lamps on. The ambient lighting is controlled using the buttons and knob on the overhead console.

Battery Saver
Note. Time-out is 30 seconds if the vehicle is in Factory or Transport mode.
The BCM provides automatic shut-off of the courtesy and demand lamps after a time-out period when the ignition is OFF. A timer in the BCM starts when
- the ignition transitions to OFF.
- any door or liftgate/luggage compartment lid becomes ajar.
- an UNLOCK button of the RKE transmitter is pressed.
- a door is unlocked using a key.
- the door lock switch is pressed.
When 10 minutes (30 minutes for demand lamps) have elapsed, the BCM automatically shuts off voltage to the lamps. The timer restarts (voltage is restored if the BCM is in battery saver mode) if
- the ignition transitions out of OFF.
- any door or liftgate/luggage compartment lid becomes ajar.
- the UNLOCK button of the RKE transmitter is pressed.
- a door is unlocked using a key.
- the door lock switch is pressed.
Courtesy Lamps
The BCM controls the courtesy lighting functions and timing by monitoring inputs from the following
- Door ajar switches
- Ignition state
- RKE system
For vehicles equipped with puddle lamps, the DDM and the PDM provide voltage to the left and right puddle lamps based on messaged input from the BCM over the communication network.
The BCM sends a voltage signal to each door or liftgate ajar switch. When the doors or liftgate are closed, the circuit is switched to ground and the voltage is pulled low, indicating closed doors.
For vehicles equipped with door modules, the DDM and the PDM provides ground for the door ajar switch.
The BCM monitors the ignition state and inputs from the RKE system to determine when to energize the interior light relay. When the interior light relay is energized, voltage is provided to the interior lamps. The BCM controls the ground side of the courtesy lamps for the illuminated entry and exit features.
For keyless entry, the BCM monitors input from the RKE transmitter (directly from the integrated keyhead transmitters (IKTs on vehicles without intelligent access (IA)) or from the RFA module (on vehicles with intelligent access (IA)) to determine when to activate/deactivate the illuminated entry and exit functions.
The interior courtesy lamps can also be activated from the courtesy lamp switch mounted on the front/ driver interior lamp. The front interior lamp (vehicles without a roof opening panel) or the driver interior lamp (vehicles with a roof opening panel) controls the courtesy lamp function of the remaining interior lamp(s). When the courtesy lamp button is pressed on the front/driver interior lamp, the courtesy lamp function for all the lamps is turned on/off. If any door is open, the BCM command overrides the function of the front/driver courtesy lamp switch and activates the courtesy lamps.
Illuminated Entry and Exit
The illuminated entry and exit features provide temporary illumination of the parking lamps, the dimmable backlighting, the ambient backlighting and the courtesy lamps. Refer to the chart for additional information.
Note. An arbitrator (software programming) within the BCM determines which actions take precedence over others (for example, an open door keeps the courtesy lamps on even when a command to lock the doors is received).

Theater Lighting
The theater lighting option ramps-up the courtesy lamps over 0.7 seconds when courtesy lamp is requested. The theater lighting feature ramps-down the courtesy lamps over 1.7 seconds when interior lighting deactivation is requested by any feature other than the panic alarm or battery saver.
Demand Lamps
When the BCM is in not in battery saver mode, the interior light relay is energized to provide voltage to the demand lamps.
Ambient Lighting
The ambient lighting subsystem consists of the ambient lighting switch, dimmer control and the ambient lighting module (all integrated into the overhead console), and the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) located within the floor console cup holders, front door panels and under the instrument panel footwell areas. The ambient lighting is operational when the ignition is in any state other than OFF (the exception is when it is used in conjunction with the illuminated entry/exit features), the headlamps are on and the outside ambient light level is low. The ambient lighting switch cycles the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) through 7 different color combinations. The brightness is changed using the dimmer control which allows the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to be turned off as well.
The right search mode control switch activates all ambient light areas and all dome lamps. The search mode control switch needs to be pressed again to deactivate the dome lamps and return to the previously selected ambient light color.
The ambient lighting control module controls the color and light intensity. The ambient lighting module receives information from the BCM through a LIN circuit for illuminated entry/exit functions. The ambient lighting module provides voltage to all of the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). A secondary LIN circuit is routed from the ambient lighting module to all of the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Each LED changes color and intensity based on the input from the ambient lighting module.
As an additional function, the ambient lighting illuminates red on any open door.
Door Ajar Switch
The door ajar switches (ground switches) each receive a voltage signal from the BCM on independent circuits. When the door is closed, the door ajar switch is closed, routing the signal to ground. When the door is opened, the door ajar switch opens.
Ground is provided to the door ajar switches from the door modules.
Interior Lamp
All of the interior lamps receive voltage from the interior lamp relay (integrated into the BCM) when the battery saver feature is not active. This is used by each interior lamp to power the LED within it.
The front interior lamp uses a private communication protocol to command the rear lamps on or off.

For vehicles not equipped with a roof opening panel, GO to B12
- B12 CHECK THE REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Front Interior Lamp C931. Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C931-2 - Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: GO to B13
- B13 CHECK THE REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C931-2 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to B14 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- B14 CHECK THE REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C931-2 ohms C901-4 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new front interior lamp. No: REPAIR the circuit.
- B15 ISOLATE THE PASSENGER INTERIOR LAMP Close the door. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: RH Front Interior Lamp C903. Open any door. Does the rear interior lamp illuminate? Yes: INSTALL a new RH front interior lamp. No: GO to B16
- B16 ISOLATE THE REAR INTERIOR LAMP Close the door. Ignition OFF. Connect: RH Front Interior Lamp C903. Disconnect: Rear Interior Lamp C901. Open any door. Does the RH front interior lamp illuminate? Yes: INSTALL a new RH front interior lamp. No: GO to B17
- B17 CHECK THE PASSENGER/REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Close the door. Disconnect: RH Front Interior Lamp C903. Disconnect: LH Front Interior Lamp C908. Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C908-2 - Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: GO to B18
- B18 CHECK THE PASSENGER/REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C908-2 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to B19 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- B19 CHECK THE PASSENGER/REAR LAMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C908-2 ohms C901-4 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new LH front interior lamp. No: REPAIR the circuit.
- B20 CHECK FOR CORRECT BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) OPERATION Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. - D4 CHECK THE INTERIOR COURTESY LAMP GROUND CONTROLLED CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Front Interior Lamp C931 (without a roof opening panel). Disconnect: LH Front Interior Lamp C908 (with a roof opening panel). Measure: FRONT INTERIOR LAMP (WITHOUT A ROOF OPENING PANEL) Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C931-4 ohms - LH FRONT INTERIOR LAMP (WITH A ROOF OPENING PANEL) Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C908-4 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new LH front/front interior lamp. No: REPAIR the circuit.

PINPOINT TEST G: THE BATTERY SAVER DOES NOT DEACTIVATE AFTER TIMEOUT
- G1: CHECK THE DEMAND LAMP VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: BCM C2280F. Turn any demand (map or vanity mirror) lamp on. Does the demand lamp turn on? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: GO to G2
- G2 CHECK FOR CORRECT BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) OPERATION Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. - H1: CHECK FOR AMBIENT LIGHTING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM Self-Test. Is DTC B1088:86, B1088:88 or B1390:87 present? Yes: GO to H2 No: GO to H7
- H2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Overhead Console C912. Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-8 - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to H3 No: REPAIR the ambient lighting module voltage supply circuit for an open.
- H3 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-8 C912-5 Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to H4 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H4 CHECK THE LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: BCM C2280H. Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-6 - Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: GO to H5
- H5 CHECK THE LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-6 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to H6 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H6 CHECK THE LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-6 ohms C2280H-12 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to H14 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H7 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Overhead Console Illumination C9046. Ignition ON. Turn the parking lamps on. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C9046-1 - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to H10 No: GO to H8
- H8 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING MODULE LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) VOLTAGE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Turn the parking lamps off. Disconnect: Overhead Console C912. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-16 ohms C9046-1 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: GO to H9 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H9 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect all of the ambient lighting Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs). Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-16 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new overhead console. REFER to: «OVERHEAD CONSOLE»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console-except-electric) . No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H10 ISOLATE THE AMBIENT LIGHTING LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES (LEDS) Turn the parking lamps on. Disconnect and then connect the Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs) one at a time while observing the other Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs). Overhead console illumination Left front footwell Right front footwell Passenger door map pocket Passenger door release handle Driver door map pocket Driver door release handle Floor console cupholder Do the other ambient lighting Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs) illuminate when an individual LED is disconnected? Yes: INSTALL a new LED in question. No: GO to H11
- H11 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect all of the ambient lighting Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs). Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-15 - Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: GO to H12
- H12 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-15 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to H13 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- H13 CHECK THE AMBIENT LIGHTING LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK (LIN) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C912-15 ohms C3349-2 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new overhead console. REFER to: «OVERHEAD CONSOLE»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console-except-electric) . No: REPAIR the circuit.

PINPOINT TEST I: A PUDDLE LAMP IS INOPERATIVE OR ALWAYS ON
- I1: CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR COURTESY LAMPS Ignition ON. Ignition OFF. Open and close a door. Observe the interior courtesy lamp operation for 30 seconds. Do the interior courtesy lamps operate correctly? Yes: If a puddle lamp is always on, GO to I2 If a puddle lamp is inoperative, GO to I3 No: REFER to the «Symptom Chart: Interior Lighting»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system-except-electric__symptom-chart-interior-lighting) and diagnose the interior courtesy lamps.
- I2 CHECK THE PUDDLE LAMP POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Disconnect: DDM C501B (left puddle lamp). Disconnect: PDM C652B (right puddle lamp). Ignition ON. Does the puddle lamp continue to illuminate? Yes: REPAIR the circuit. No: INSTALL a new door module in question. REFER to: «DOOR MODULE»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/cruise-control-systems/#multifunction-electronic-modules-except-electric) .
- I3 CHECK THE MIRROR OPERATION Ignition ON. Using the exterior mirror control switch, operate the exterior power mirrors. Do the exterior power mirrors operate? Yes: GO to I4 No: REFER to: «REAR VIEW MIRRORS»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/mirrors/#rear-view-mirrors-vehicles-with-one-touch-up-door-window-except-electric) (Vehicles With: One-Touch Up Door Window) .
- I4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE PUDDLE LAMP Ignition OFF. Disconnect: LH Exterior Mirror C521 (left puddle lamp). Disconnect: RH Exterior Mirror C626 (right puddle lamp). Ignition ON. Open any door. Measure: LH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C521-8 - RH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C626-8 - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes: GO to I7 No: GO to I5
- I5 CHECK THE PUDDLE LAMP VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: DDM C501B (left puddle lamp). Disconnect: PDM C652B (right puddle lamp). Measure: LH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C521-8 ohms - RH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C626-8 ohms - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to I6 No: REPAIR the circuit.
- I6 CHECK THE PUDDLE LAMP VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: LH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C521-8 ohms C501B-6 RH EXTERIOR MIRROR Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C626-8 ohms C652B-6 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
