12V Battery Charging System
The 12V battery is charged by the Direct Current/Direct Current (DC/DC) converter control module. The Battery Monitoring Sensor continuously monitors the battery state of charge condition and provides the BCM with this information. The BCM communicates this information to the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The PCM communicates the battery desired setpoint to the Direct Current/Direct Current (DC/DC) converter control module which supplies the necessary charge voltage to the 12V battery. 12V Battery Management System
Note. When any vehicle module is being programmed, connect an external battery charger to make sure the module programming is completed without interruption due to the load shedding feature becoming active. The external battery charger must maintain a system voltage above 13 volts. This may require a charger setting higher than the lowest charge setting. The external battery charger negative connection must be made to an engine or vehicle chassis ground and not the negative battery terminal. If the connection is to the negative battery terminal, load shedding may begin and module programming may be corrupted. After charging has begun, start the engine to clear any load shed states and then turn the engine off and proceed with programming.
Charging and Jump Starting
Do not charge or jump start the vehicle by connecting to the battery negative terminal. Refer to the Owners Guide for more information.
If the vehicle has been jump started, test the battery condition.

If the 12V vehicle battery has been charged by connecting to the battery negative terminal, do not reset the Battery Monitoring System.
Battery Monitoring Sensor
The Battery Monitoring Sensor continuously monitors the condition and the state of charge of the 12V battery and provides the BCM with this information. The Battery Monitoring Sensor also estimates losses in the battery capacity over time. The Battery Monitoring Sensor should only be reset when the battery is replaced. It is urgently recommended that the replacement battery has the exact same specification as the original battery. If it does not, the accuracy of the Battery Monitoring Sensor outputs will be compromised.
The Battery Monitoring Sensor is clamped directly to the negative terminal of the battery and grounds to the vehicle at the chassis ground connection point through the negative battery cable and eyelet. It is part of the negative battery cable and cannot be serviced separately. For more information

External customer loads must only be connected to the vehicle at the customer battery connection point. If an external customer load is connected at the negative battery post, the Battery Monitoring Sensor accuracy cannot be guaranteed. It is recommended that the Battery Monitoring Sensor pole clamp is not removed unless a battery replacement is required. Should the battery need to be isolated, this should be done by disconnecting the ground eyelet at the chassis ground.
Body Control Module (BCM)
The BCM monitors the Battery Monitoring Sensor and provides the PCM with battery state of charge information. For more information on the BCM , Refer to: MODULE CONTROLLED FUNCTIONS - SYSTEM OPERATION AND COMPONENT DESCRIPTION (419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Description and Operation).
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Direct Current/Direct Current (DC/DC) Converter Control Module
The Direct Current/Direct Current (DC/DC) converter control module is responsible for maintaining and charging the 12V battery. It is enabled when the high voltage battery contactors have closed, providing high-voltage power to the Direct Current/Direct Current (DC/DC) converter control module. - Verify the customer concern.

- Inspect the following items: Fusible links. Verify BJB fuse F22. High current BJB for loose or corroded connections. Wiring, terminals or connectors.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The BCM monitors the battery state of charge using the battery monitoring sensor attached to the negative battery cable. Battery voltage is hardwired to the battery monitoring sensor and data is transferred from the battery monitoring sensor to the BCM via a LIN circuit. The battery monitoring sensor is part of the negative battery cable and is not serviced separately.

- A1 CHECK ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR CONDITION Disconnect Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646 . Check the Battery Monitoring Sensor electrical connector for security, damage and corrosion. Check the battery cable connections. Connect Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646 . Are all connectors clean and connected properly? Yes : GO to A2 No : REPAIR any corrosion in the battery cable connections. REPAIR any damaged, bent or pushed-out pins.
- A2 RETRIEVE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) Ignition ON. Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in all modules. Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test. Did the DTC return? Yes : GO to A3 No : The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- A3 CHECK THE BATTERY MONITORING SENSOR VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646 . Measure and record: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1646-1 Ground Is the voltage within 0.5 volt of the recorded battery voltage? Yes : GO to A4 No : REPAIR the circuit.
- A4 CHECK THE BATTERY MONITORING SENSOR LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Disconnect BCM C2280A . Ignition ON. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1646-2 Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to A5
- A5 CHECK THE BATTERY MONITORING SENSOR LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1646-2 Ground Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A6 No : REPAIR the circuit.
- A6 CHECK THE BATTERY MONITORING SENSOR LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1646-2 C2280A-42 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new Battery monitoring sensor. REFER to: «BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-cables-electric) (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation). No : REPAIR the circuit. GO to A7
- A7 CLEAR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) Connect Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646 . Connect BCM C2280A . Ignition ON. Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in all modules. Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test. Is DTC B11DB:83, B11DB:96, or U1007:00 present? Yes : GO to A8 No : For all other BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) refer to «DTC Charts»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/charging-system/#charging-system-electric__dtc-charts) .
- A8 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM . REFER to: «BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-electric) (419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Removal and Installation). CLEAR all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in all modules. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
