OVERVIEW

WARNINGTo prevent the risk of high-voltage shock, always follow precisely all warnings and service instructions, including instructions to depower the system. The high-voltage hybrid system utilizes approximately 300 volts DC, provided through high-voltage cables to its components and modules. The high-voltage cables and wiring are identified by orange harness tape or orange wire covering. All high-voltage components are marked with high-voltage warning labels with a high-voltage symbol. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death.

The transmission assembly has the following components

  1. Single-speed reduction gear
  2. Park pawl mechanism
  3. TR sensor
  4. TCM

Single Speed Gearbox

This vehicle has a single speed gear reduction transmission that transfers power from the electric motor to the halfshafts. The gear reduction system is mounted on the back of the electric motor and is enclosed by a gear box housing. The gear reduction system consists of 3 component: the input gear assembly, intermediate shaft assembly and a differential assembly.

Park Pawl

This transmission has a park pawl mechanism with a park gear, park pawl, and a park pawl actuator rod. The park gear is splined to the intermediate shaft assembly. The park pawl is pinned to the gear box housing and the electric motor housing. The park pawl actuator rod is connected to the manual lever detent plate and pushes the park pawl into the park gear when park is selected.

TR Sensor

The TR sensor is bolted to the gear box housing and is keyed to the manual shaft by a flat keyway. The TR sensor provides the PCM with a signal for the manual lever position and is not adjustable.

TCM

The TCM is mounted on the electric motor and is not serviceable. The TCM converts high-voltage DC current into 3-phase AC current for the electric motor. The TCM also supplies fused high-voltage DC current to the DC/DC converter, air conditioning compressor module (ACCM) and the electric supplemental PTC heater.

NETWORK MESSAGE CHART

Park

When the selector lever is in the park position, the TR sensor sends a signal of 4.20-4.50 volts to the PCM on pins 1-2 and 0.60-0.90 volts on pins 4-5. The park pawl locks the final drive to the gearbox. Voltage is not supplied to the electric motor.

Reverse

When the selector lever is in the reverse position, the TR sensor sends a signal of 3.40-3.70 volts to the PCM on pins 1-2 and 1.40-1.70 volts on pins 4-5. The vehicle can only be operated in a rearward direction and the reversing lamps are illuminated. The PCM sends a signal to the TCM to supply voltage to the electric motor with reverse polarity based off of the TR sensor signal.

Neutral

When the selector lever is in the neutral position, the TR sensor sends a signal of 2.60-2.90 volts to the PCM on pins 1-2 and 2.20-2.50 volts on pins 4-5. The electric motor does not input any torque to the gearbox. Voltage is removed from the electric motor.

Drive

When the selector lever is in the drive position, the TR sensor sends a signal of 1.80-2.10 volts to the PCM on pins 1-2 and 3-3.30 volts on pins 4-5. The PCM sends a signal to the TCM to supply voltage to the electric motor based off of the TR sensor signal.

Low

When the selector lever is in the low position, the TR sensor sends a signal of 1-1.30 volts to the PCM on pins 1-2 and 3.80-4.10 volts on pins 4-5. The PCM sends a signal to the TCM to supply voltage to the electric motor based off of the TR sensor signal. In low, conventional low position is simulated with limited RPM and engine braking is simulated through the regenerative braking.

Scheme 122: SINGLE-SPEED REDUCTION GEAR

The single speed gear reduction transmission has an input gear assembly, intermediate shaft assembly and a differential assembly.

The input gear is pressed into a bearing retained in the motor housing by a snap ring and has 2 inner roller bearings that allows it to spin on the RH outer surface of the differential. The input gear transfers torque from the electric motor to the intermediate shaft assembly.

The intermediate shaft assembly spins on a bearing that is pressed into the motor housing and a bearing that is pressed into the gearbox housing. The intermediate shaft assembly has the park gear splined to it. The intermediate shaft transfers torque from the input gear to the differential ring gear.

The differential spins on 2 roller bearings housed in the input gear and a bearing that is retained by a snap ring in the gearbox housing. The differential is a conventional type with 2 pinion gears supported by a pinion shaft and 2 side gears supported by the differential case, the LH halfshaft and the transfer shaft (which splines to the RH halfshaft).

The gear reduction transmission has a final drive ratio of 7.82:1.

Scheme 123: PARK PAWL MECHANISM

The park gear is located on the intermediate shaft assembly. There are lugs around the outer diameter of the park gear to allow the park pawl to hold the park gear stationary to the motor housing, which holds the differential in place and keeps the vehicle from moving. The park pawl is pinned to the electric motor housing and the gear housing. The park pawl actuator rod is connected to the manual shaft detent plate and pushes the park pawl into the park gear when park is selected.

Scheme 124: TR SENSOR

The TR sensor has a 6-pin connector. The TR sensor is bolted to the gear box housing and is keyed to the manual shaft by a flat keyway. The manual shaft is turned by the selector lever linkage and the manual lever. The TR sensor sends a signal to the PCM to start the vehicle in PARK and NEUTRAL. The TR sensor opens/closes a set of 4 switches that are monitored by the PCM to determine the position of the manual lever (P, R, N, D, L). The TR sensor is not adjustable.

The primary purpose of the TCM is to convert high-voltage DC current into 3-phase AC current to supply the field coils of the electric motor when requested by the PCM . This is accomplished through the use of inverters and internal speed sensors. Additionally, the TCM carries out regenerative braking when requested by the brake system control module (BSCM) by reconfiguring the electric motor to act as a generator. This decelerates the vehicle and returns energy to the high voltage traction battery (HVTB), extending vehicle range.

The TCM also serves as a high-voltage DC junction box, distributing fused high-voltage DC to the following underhood components

  1. DC/DC converter
  2. Air conditioning compressor module (ACCM)
  3. Electric supplemental PTC heater

The TCM and electric motor are serviceable as an assembly only. Do not attempt to open or carry out internal repairs on the TCM and electric motor.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TCM receives any immediate shutdown messages from the PCM by way of a dedicated PCM shutoff circuit. The TCM monitors the PCM shutoff circuit and sets the appropriate DTC if a fault is detected.

P1A0A:29Immediate Shutdown Signal A: Signal InvalidThis DTC sets if the TCM detects that the PCM shutoff signal is not within a specified range.

DTC FAULT TRIGGER CONDITIONS

PINPOINT TEST A

  1. A1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM THE TCM SELF-TEST Using a scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test. Are DTCs P1A0A:01, P1A0A:17, P1A0A:18, or P1A0A:29 present? Yes : GO to A2 No : The system is operating normally at this time.
  2. A2 CHECK THE PCM SHUTOFF CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF Disconnect C1822A. Disconnect C175B. Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-3 C175B-58 Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to A3 No : REPAIR the circuit.
  3. A3 CHECK THE PCM SHUTOFF CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-3 Ground Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A4 No : REPAIR the circuit.
  4. A4 CHECK THE PCM SHUTOFF CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition ON Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-3 Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to A5
  5. A5 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM OPERATION Ignition OFF Inspect the TCM connector. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the TCM connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM . REFER to: «ELECTRIC MOTOR»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/mechanical/#electric-motor) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. Address the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

The TCM monitors the low voltage system and sets a DTC if the system voltage falls below or exceeds a calibrated limit.

PINPOINT TEST B

  1. B1 CHECK FOR SELF-TEST DTCS Using a scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test. Is DTC P0560:16 present? Yes : GO to B2 No : Unable to duplicate or identify the concern at this time.
  2. B2 CHECK FOR ANY OTHER TCM AND PCM DTCS Using a scan tool, carry out the TCM and PCM self-test. Are any other DTCs received from the TCM or PCM self-tests? Yes : DISREGARD the current DTC at this time. DIAGNOSE the next DTC. No : GO to B3
  3. B3 CHECK THE B+ CIRCUITS FOR VOLTAGE Disconnect C1822A. Ignition ON Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-15 C1822A-10 C1822A-16 C1822A-11 Are the voltages greater than 10 V? Yes : GO to B5 No : GO to B4
  4. B4 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE TCM USING GROUND AS A REFERENCE Measure: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-15 Ground C1822A-16 Ground Are the voltages greater than 10 V? Yes : CHECK the ground to C1822A for corrosion or loose wires. REPAIR as necessary. No : REPAIR the open circuit.
  5. B5 CHECK THE TCM POWER AND GROUND CIRCUIT(S) FOR INTERMITTENT CONCERNS Ignition OFF Connect a non-powered test lamp between: Positive Lead Measurement/Action Negative Lead C1822A-15 C1822A-10 C1822A-16 C1822A-11 Ignition ON Observe the test lamp for a sudden illumination of the test lamp, indicating a concern, while completing the following: Shake, wiggle, and bend the B+ and GND circuit(s). Visually inspect the TCM and harness connectors for damage and corrosion. Is a concern present? Yes : ISOLATE the concern and REPAIR as necessary. No : GO to B6
  6. B6 CHECK FOR SELF-TEST DTCS Ignition OFF Connect C1822A. Clear the TCM DTCs. Using a scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test. Is DTC P0560:16 present during the TCM self-test? Yes : INSTALL a new TCM . REFER to: «ELECTRIC MOTOR»(/ford/focus-st/iii-2012-2015/remont/mechanical/#electric-motor) . No : Unable to duplicate or identify the concern at this time. The DC to DC Converter Control Module (DC/DC) regulates voltage to the low voltage system. CHECK the wiring and the appropriate fuse.
