Principles of Operation
On automatic headlamp equipped vehicles, the smart junction box (SJB) receives a signal from the front wiper motor when it is activated. After the wipers have been on for more than 10 seconds, the SJB will illuminate the exterior lamps.
Normal Operation
Under normal operation, the front windshield wiper motor receives power through circuit CRW03 (VT/WH). The front windshield wiper motor is grounded through circuits GD108 (BK/VT) and GD120 (BK/GN). The front windshield wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multi-function switch through circuits CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW19 (BU/OG) and CRW08 (VT/OG) to activate the wipers to the appropriate speeds.

- Open in circuits CRW03 (VT/WH), GD108 (BK/VT), GD120 (BK/GN) or GD145 (BK/BU)
- Inoperative multi-function switch
- Inoperative windshield wiper motor

- A1 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW03 (VT/WH) FOR VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between windshield wiper motor C125-5, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-8, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and ground. Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to A2 . NO : VERIFY the BJB fuse 37 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A2 CHECK CIRCUITS GD120 (BK/GN) AND GD108 (BK/VT) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-6, circuit GD120 (BK/GN), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-3, circuit GD108 (BK/VT), harness side and ground. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A3 CHECK THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH Disconnect: Multi-function Switch C202 Carry out the multi-function switch component test. Refer to «Component Test - Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S35498648312007110700000) . Did the multi-function switch pass the component test? YES : Go to A4 . NO : INSTALL a new multi-function switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-270945) .
- A4 CHECK CIRCUIT GD145 (BK/BU) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between multi-function switch C202-15, circuit GD145 (BK/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A5 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A5 CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect all windshield wiper motor connectors. Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all the windshield wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : Go to A6 . NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A6 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Carry out the «Component Test - Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S35498648312007110700000) . Did the windshield wiper motor pass the component test? YES : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by binding or incorrect pivot arm adjustment. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S05242581952007110700000) .
Under normal operation, the rear window wiper motor receives power through circuit SBB30 (BN/RD) and circuit CBP12 (GN/WH). The rear window wiper motor is grounded through circuit GD150 (BK/WH). The rear window wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multi-function switch through circuits CRW20 (GY/YE) and CRW21 (YE/VT) to activate the wiper to the appropriate speeds.

- Fuse(s)
- Open in circuits SBB30 (BN/RD), CBP12 (GN/WH) or GD150 (BK/WH)
- Inoperative rear window wiper motor
- Inoperative multi-function switch

- B1 CHECK CIRCUITS CBP12 (GN/WH) AND SBB30 (BN/RD) FOR VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor C4323 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between rear window wiper motor C4323-7, circuit CBP12 (GN/WH), harness side and ground; and between rear window wiper motor C4323-8, circuit SBB30 (BN/RD), harness side and ground. Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to B2 . NO : VERIFY BJB fuse 30 (25A) and SJB fuse 12 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B2 CHECK CIRCUIT GD150 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Measure the resistance between rear window wiper C4323-2, circuit GD150 (BK/WH), harness side and ground; and between rear window wiper C4323-3, circuit GD150 (BK/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to B3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B3 CHECK THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Multi-function Switch C202 Carry out the multi-function switch component test. Refer to «Component Test - Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S35498648312007110700000) . Did the multi-function switch pass the component test? YES : Go to B4 . NO : INSTALL a new multi-function switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-270945) .
- B4 CHECK CIRCUIT GD145 (BK/BU) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between multi-function switch C202-15, circuit GD145 (BK/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to B5 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B5 CHECK CIRCUIT CPL58 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN The liftgate must be closed. Measure the resistance between rear wiper motor C4323-6, circuit CPL58 (GY/OG) harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to B6 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B6 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: liftgate glass open. corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : Go to B7 . NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B7 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER MOTOR Carry out the «Component Test - Wiper Motor - Rear Window»(ref-270924-S06175834702007110700000) . Did the rear window wiper motor pass the component test? YES : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by binding or incorrect pivot arm adjustment. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : INSTALL a new rear window wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Rear Window»(ref-270924-S34588516402007110700000) .
Under normal operation, the windshield wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multi-function switch through circuits CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW19 (BU/OG) and CRW08 (VT/OG) to activate the wipers to the appropriate speeds.

- Short to ground in circuits CRW19 (BU/OG), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW08 (VT/OG) or CRW17 (GN/VT)
- Inoperative windshield wiper motor

- C2 CHECK CIRCUITS CRW19 (BU/OG), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW08 (VT/OG) AND CRW17 (GN/VT) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Using the following table, measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125 harness side and ground: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Ground C125-10, circuit CRW19 (BU/OG) ground C125-11, circuit CRW18 (VT/WH) ground C125-1, circuit CRW08 (VT/OG) ground C125-9, circuit CRW17 (GN/VT) ground Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to C3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C3 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : Go to C4 . NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.

- D2 CHECK CIRCUITS CRW20 (GY/YE) AND CRW21 (YE/VT) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor C4323 Measure the resistance between rear window wiper motor C4323-5, circuit CRW20 (GY/YE), harness side and ground; and between rear window wiper motor C4323-1, circuit CRW21 (YE/VT), harness side and ground. Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to D3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D3 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Under normal operation, the multi-function switch receives ground through GD145 (BK/BU). The rear window wiper motor receives input from the multi-function switch through circuit CRW20 (GY/YE) to operate the rear window wiper wash and wipe function.

- Inoperative rear window wiper motor
Under normal operation, the windshield washer pump motor is grounded through internal relays in the wiper motors using circuits CRW14 (BU/WH) and CRW12 (GY/OG). The multi-function switch provides input to the windshield wiper motor through circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) to activate the washer. The windshield wiper motor activates the internal relay and then provides power through circuit CRW14 (BU/WH). When the rear window washer is activated, the internal relay in the rear window wiper motor provides power through circuit CRW12 (GY/OG).
Possible Causes
- Open in circuits CRW14 (BU/WH), CRW12 (GY/OG), CRW20 (GY/YE), CRW07 (GY/BN) or GD150 (BK/WH)
- Short to ground in circuit CRW14 (BU/WH), CRW12 (GY/OG), CRW07 (GY/BN) or CRW20 (GY/YE)
- Inoperative multi-function switch
- Inoperative windshield washer pump motor
- Inoperative windshield wiper motor
- Inoperative rear window wiper motor

- J1 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR GROUND Disconnect: Washer Pump Motor C1397 Key in ON position. Measure the resistance between washer pump C1397-2, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH) harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to J3 . NO : Go to J2 .
- J2 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-7, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH), harness side and washer pump C1397-2, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH) harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to J14 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J3 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW12 (GY/OG) FOR GROUND Measure the resistance between washer pump C1397-1, circuit CRW12 (GY/OG) harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to J6 . NO : Go to J4 .
- J4 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW12 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor C4323 Measure the resistance between rear window wiper motor C4323-4, circuit CRW12 (GY/OG), harness side and washer pump C1397-1, circuit CRW12 (GY/OG) harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to J5 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J5 CHECK CIRCUIT GD150 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between rear window wiper motor C4323-3, circuit GD150 (BK/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to J15 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J6 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR VOLTAGE Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between washer pump C1397-2, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH) harness side and ground while depressing the multi-function switch to the WASH position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to J10 . NO : Go to J7 .
- J7 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Measure the resistance between washer pump C1397-2, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH) harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to J8 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J8 CHECK THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH Disconnect: Multi-function switch C202 Carry out the multi-function switch component test. Refer to «Component Test - Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S35498648312007110700000) . Did the multi-function switch pass the component test? YES : Go to J9 . NO : INSTALL a new multi-function switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-270945) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- J9 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW07 (BY/BN) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-12, circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) harness side and multi-function switch C202-10, circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) harness side; and between multi-function switch C202-10, circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between multi-function switch and wiper motor; and greater than 10,000 ohms between multi-function switch and ground? YES : Go to J14 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J10 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW12 (GY/OG) FOR VOLTAGE Measure the voltage between washer pump C1397-1, circuit CRW12 (GY/OG) harness side and ground while depressing the multi-function switch to the REAR WASH position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : INSTALL a new washer pump. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to J11 .
- J11 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW12 (GY/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Rear Window Wiper Motor C4323 Measure the resistance between washer pump C1397-1, circuit CRW12 (GY/OG) harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? NO : INSTALL a new multi-function switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-270945) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- J13 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW20 (GY/YE) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between rear window wiper motor C4323-5, circuit CRW20 (GY/YE) harness side and multi-function switch C202-14, circuit CRW20 (GY/YE) harness side; and between multi-function switch C202-14, circuit CRW20 (GY/YE) harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between multi-function switch and wiper motor; and greater than 10,000 ohms between multi-function switch and ground? YES : Go to J15 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J14 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: liftgate glass open. corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Windshield»(ref-270924-S05242581952007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- J15 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER MOTOR Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: liftgate glass open. corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new rear window wiper motor. REFER to «Wiper Motor - Rear Window»(ref-270924-S34588516402007110700000) . TEST the system for normal operation. NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
During normal operation, the washer pump motor is powered through an internal relay in the wiper motor using circuit CRW14 (BU/WH). The multi-function switch provides input to the windshield wiper motor through circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) to activate the washer. The washer pump motor is grounded at all times through circuit GD123 (BK/GY) early build or GD120 (BK/WH) late build.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to K3 . NO : Go to K2 .

- K3 CHECK CIRCUIT GD120 (BK/WH)/GD123 (BK/GY) FOR GROUND Key in OFF position. Connect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Disconnect: Washer Pump Motor C137 Measure the resistance between C137-2, circuit GD123 (BK/GY) (early build) or GD120 (BK/WH) (late build), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to K4 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K4 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Washer Pump Motor C137 Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between C137-1, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH), harness side and ground while depressing the multi-function switch to the windshield wiper wash position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : INSTALL a new washer pump motor. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to K5 .
- K5 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW14 (BU/WH) FOR OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Measure the resistance between C125-7, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH), harness side and C137-1, circuit CRW14 (BU/WH), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to K6 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- K6 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins Connect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Connect the wiper motor connector and make sure it seats correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Under normal operation, the windshield wiper motor receives input from the powertrain control module (PCM) through circuit VMC05 (VT/OG) with vehicle speed information. The windshield wiper motor electronics then determine the speed of the windshield wiper motor.

- L2 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC05 (VT/OG) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: PCM C175b Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Measure the resistance between PCM C175b-1, circuit VMC05 (VT/OG), harness side and windshield wiper motor C125-4, circuit VMC05 (VT/OG), harness side. YES : Go to L3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L3 CHECK CIRCUIT VMC05 (VT/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between PCM C175b-1, circuit VMC05 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to L4 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- L4 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION Disconnect all wiper motor connectors. Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : Go to L5 . NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
- L5 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR Key in OFF position. If equipped with automatic headlamps, the smart junction box (SJB) will illuminate the exterior lamps, including the parking lamps, when the front wipers are on for more than 10 seconds. The SJB monitors the front wiper motor on circuit CRW22 (WH/BU).

Disconnect: SJB C2280E Measure the resistance between SJB C2280E-8 circuit CRW22 (WH/BU), harness side and windshield wiper motor C125-2 circuit CRW22 (WH/BU); then between SJB C2280E-8 circuit CRW22 (WH/BU), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the SJB and windshield wiper motor and greater than 10,000 ohms between the SJB and ground? YES : Go to M3 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- M3 CHECK FOR CORRECT MODULE OPERATION Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they are seated correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-270935) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the SJB self-test. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
