The roof opening panel is an electronically operated panel that can be opened or closed by depressing a switch located inside the vehicle on the overhead console. It also has one-touch open and close features.

When the roof opening panel switch is momentarily rocked rearward, the roof opening panel moves back into the storage space between the headliner and the roof panel.

When the roof opening panel switch is momentarily rocked forward, the roof opening panel will move to the fully CLOSED position.

The roof opening panel can be moved to the fully CLOSED position by rocking the switch forward and holding it until the roof opening panel is fully closed.

When the roof opening panel is in the fully CLOSED position, the rear portion can be raised to the VENT position to provide ventilation by rocking the switch forward. The roof opening panel can be closed by rocking the switch rearward.

Pinpoint Test E: The Roof Opening Panel Does Not Open or Close - Explorer

Refer to appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Roof Opening Panel for schematic and connector information.

The roof opening panel motor must be initialized when repairs are carried out on any part of the roof opening panel system, including: whenever the roof opening panel motor has been removed from the roof opening panel system, the roof opening panel glass has been removed from the roof opening panel system, the roof opening panel assembly has been removed from the vehicle, a new roof opening panel motor has been installed, a new roof opening panel glass has been installed or a new roof opening panel assembly has been installed. Refer to Roof Opening Panel Motor Initialization .

The roof opening panel uses an integrated motor and module to operate the roof opening panel. A new roof opening panel motor/module is installed as an assembly.

Note. To protect the roof opening panel motor from overheating, the motor will only run for approximately 2 minutes at a time. After this amount of time, the motor will shut down and then ignore all commands (except close) for 20 seconds. When the 20 seconds have elapsed, the motor will function normally again.

The roof opening panel motor/module receives voltage from the accessory delay relay through circuit CBP05 (YE) when the key is in the ACC or RUN position and voltage at all times through circuit SBP01 (RD). Ground is provided to the roof opening panel motor/module through circuit GD133 (BK). For vehicles equipped with a mini overhead console, the roof opening panel motor/module provides ground to the roof opening panel switch through circuit CPR39 (VT/WH). For vehicles equipped with a medium overhead console, the roof opening panel switch is grounded through circuit GD133 (BK). When the roof opening panel switch is pressed to the CLOSE position, a ground signal is sent to the roof opening panel motor/module through circuit CPR40 (YE/OG), which causes the roof opening panel to close. When the roof opening panel switch is pressed to the OPEN position, a ground signal is sent to the roof opening panel motor/module through circuit CPR31 (VT/BN), which causes the roof opening panel to open.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Fuse(s)
