TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The electronic ignition system is a coil-on-plug ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the following components

  1. Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
  2. Ignition coils
  3. Spark plugs

The CKP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth sensor ring mounted on the crankshaft.
  3. provides base timing and crankshaft speed (RPM) to the PCM.

The 8 separate ignition coils

  1. change low voltage to high voltage pulses based on signals from the PCM.
  2. produce the high voltage pulses to the spark plugs.
  3. are connected directly to each spark plug.

The spark plugs

  1. change high voltage pulses into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
  2. originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum-enhanced active electrode for long life.

Refer to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

IMPORTANTBefore removing spark plugs, review TSB 08-7-6 SPARK PLUG REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS - 4.6L 3V/5.4L 3V/6.8L 3V .

Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound XG-3-AESE-M1C171-A

Material

  1. Disconnect the 8 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  2. Remove the 8 ignition coil bolts. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  3. Remove the 8 ignition coils.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a light film of brake caliper grease to the inside of the coil boots before installation.

Spark Plugs

IMPORTANTBefore removing spark plugs, review TSB 08-7-6 SPARK PLUG REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS - 4.6L 3V/5.4L 3V/6.8L 3V .

All vehicles

  1. Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs. For additional information, refer to «Ignition Coil-On-Plug»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/ignition-system/#engine-ignition-system-46l-3v__ignition-coil-on-plug) .
  2. Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
  3. Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  4. Inspect the spark plugs. Install new spark plugs as necessary. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/ii-2006-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-system-general-information) article.
