- Remove the engine cooling fan.
- Loosen the power steering pump pulley bolts.
- Remove the drive belt (8620). For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#cooling-system-specifications-drive-belt-routing) article.
- Remove the power steering pump pulley. Remove the bolts. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
- Disconnect the power steering return line hose at the power steering fluid reservoir. Allow the system to drain.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure hose (3A719) from the power steering pump (3A674).
- Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose from the power steering pump. Compress and move the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose clamp. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose from the power steering pump.
- Remove the power steering pump. Remove the bolts. Remove the power steering pump.

- Install the power steering pump. Position the power steering pump. Install the bolts.
- Connect the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose to the power steering pump. Connect the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose to the power steering pump. Compress and move the power steering fluid reservoir outlet hose clamp into place.
- Using the special tool, install a new seal on the power steering pressure hose.
- Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump.
- Connect the power steering return line hose to the power steering fluid reservoir.
- Install the power steering pump pulley. Position the power steering pump pulley. Install the bolts.
- Install the drive belt. For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#cooling-system-specifications-drive-belt-routing) article.
- Tighten the power steering pump pulley bolts.
- Install the engine cooling fan.

- Remove the engine cooling fan.

- When connecting a fitting with a seal ring, a new seal ring must be installed. The special tool is used to install the return line connector seal and the pressure line connector seal.

- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Disconnect the power steering return hose (3A713) at the power steering fluid cooler (3F780). Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
- Remove the power steering fluid cooler to crossmember nuts.
- Disconnect the power steering return line hose (3A005). Remove the power steering fluid cooler.

- Place front wheels in the straight ahead position. DO NOT lock the steering column.
- Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the radiator air deflector (8327). Remove the bolts. Remove the radiator air deflector.
- Remove the power steering cooler. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING FLUID COOLER»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering) .
- Loosen the LH tie-rod end jam nut.
- Remove the cotter pins and the castellated nuts. Discard the cotter pins.
- Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod ends from the knuckles.
- Remove the LH tie-rod end. Count and record the number of turns required to remove the tie-rod end.
- Remove the front stabilizer bar (5482). Mark the driver side end of the stabilizer bar for correct installation.
- Rotate the steering column shaft to access the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and remove the pinch bolt. Discard the bolt.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Turn the steering wheel back to the straight ahead position. Turn the ignition key to the locked position.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear input shaft.
- Remove the nut and disconnect the power steering lines. Drain the fluid into a suitable container. Install new O-ring seals.
- Plug the ends of the fluid lines and ports in the steering gear to prevent damage and entry of dirt.
- Remove the nuts.
- Remove the stud bolts and washers.
- Remove the steering gear to crossmember insulator bushings.
- Rotate the steering gear control valve housing toward the front of the vehicle.
- Turn the steering gear input shaft to the right until the stop is reached.
- Move the steering gear (3504) as far to the RH side of the vehicle as possible.
- Move the LH front wheel spindle tie-rod (3280) forward to clear the frame crossmember.
- Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.

- Turn the steering gear input shaft to the right until the stop is reached. Note the number of turns.
- Install the steering gear into the RH opening of the crossmember.
- Move the steering gear as far to the RH side of the vehicle as possible.
- Move the LH front wheel spindle tie-rod into the opening in the crossmember and move the steering gear into position.
- To place the steering gear in the straight ahead position, turn the steering gear input shaft to the left by half the number of turns recorded previously.
- Rotate the steering gear control valve housing toward the rear of the vehicle.
- Install the steering gear to crossmember insulator bushings as shown. The large end of the metal sleeve must be positioned downward. Check that the mounting surfaces on the crossmember are clean and free of foreign material.
- Install the steering gear to crossmember washers and stud bolts. For additional information on correct mounting hardware orientation, refer to «STEERING GEAR MOUNTING»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering) . The dished side of the washers face down.
- Install the nuts.
- Install the lines and clamp plate.
- Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft. Install the pinch bolt.
- Install the power steering fluid cooler. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING FLUID COOLER»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering) .
- Install the front stabilizer bar. For additional information, refer to «STABILIZER BAR»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-2wd) in FRONT SUSPENSION article. Orientate the front stabilizer bar as noted during removal.
- Install the LH tie-rod end on the front wheel spindle tie-rod. Rotate the tie-rod end the number of turns recorded during removal.
- Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles. Position the tie-rod ends on the steering knuckles. Install the castellated nuts. Install the new cotter pins. Check that the brake dust shields are not bent and are not in contact with the outer tie-rod boot seals.
- Tighten the tie-rod jam nuts.
- Install the radiator air deflector. Position the radiator air deflector. Install the bolts.
- Install the front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Fill, purge and leak check the power steering system. For additional information, refer to «GENERAL PROCEDURES»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system-general-information) in STEERING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
- Check the wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to «SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/suspension-front/#suspension-system-general-information) article in SUSPENSION.
