SPECIAL CARE DURING MECHANICAL REPAIRS

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures.

In some instances, it may be necessary to remove the steering column or instrument panel to access electrical components. Observe specific manufacturer SERVICE PRECAUTIONS when working on a vehicle with an air bag system.

Electrical power sources should NEVER be allowed to contact the inflator on the back of the air bag module. NEVER probe air bag system electrical wires with an analog volt-ohmmeter or test light. Always disable air bag system before servicing vehicle. See appropriate DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedure. Failure to disable system properly may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

If air bag system is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is repaired and functions properly. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors, or other air bag components which will prevent air bag system from operating as designed. If air bag system is not functional, park vehicle until system is repaired and functions properly.

CHRYSLER

All Chrysler vehicles are equipped with driver and passenger side air bags. Unless specific models are mentioned, the following procedures apply to all models with an air bag system.

Caravan, Concord, Intrepid, Neon, Prowler, PT Cruiser, Sebring Convertible, Sebring Sedan, Stratus Sedan, Town & Country, Viper, Voyager & 300M

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. If driveability problems exist, see appropriate computer relearn service information.
  1. On Concorde, Intrepid, and 300M, disconnect negative battery cable from right shock tower. On Sebring Convertible, Sebring Sedan, and Stratus Sedan, disconnect negative battery cable on left shock tower. On all other models, disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
  2. On all models, WAIT at least 2 minutes. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Use latest version of scan tool cartridge.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN or ON position, with engine off. Exit vehicle with scan tool. Ensure no one is inside vehicle. Connect negative battery cable.
  4. Using scan tool, read and record any active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTCs are not active, erase all stored DTCs. If an active SRS problem exists, DTCs will not erase.
  5. Avoid being in line with air bag(s), then turn ignition switch to LOCK or OFF position, and then to RUN or ON position. Observe SRS/AIR BAG warning light. SRS/AIR BAG warning light should illuminate for about 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning.
  6. If SRS/AIR BAG warning light fails to illuminate, or illuminates and stays on, a system malfunction exists.

Dakota, Durango, Ram Pickup, Ram Van & Ram Wagon

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. If driveability problems exist, see appropriate computer relearn service information.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Use latest version of scan tool cartridge
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN or ON position, with engine off. Exit vehicle with scan tool. Ensure no one is inside vehicle.
  3. Using scan tool, read and record any active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTCs are not active, erase all stored DTCs. If an active SRS problem exists, DTCs will not erase.
  4. With ignition still on, check that nobody is in the vehicle. From outside of the vehicle, and away from air bags, turn ignition off for about 15 seconds, then back to the RUN or ON position.
  5. Observe AIR BAG warning light. AIR BAG warning light should come on for about 6-8 seconds, then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If AIR BAG warning light either fails to come on, blinks on and off, or comes on and stays on, a system malfunction exists. Diagnose and repair as necessary.

Sebring Coupe & Stratus Coupe

  1. Turn ignition switch to ON or START position. The SRS warning light should illuminate for about 7 seconds and then turn off. This indicates that SRS is in operational order.
  2. If SRS light does NOT illuminate, stays on for more than 7 seconds, or illuminates while driving, there is a problem in the SRS. SRS must be inspected and diagnosed.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

The following precautions should be observed when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  2. Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before servicing air bag system. Servicing air bag system before 2-minute period may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  3. DO NOT use any electrical test equipment on or near SRS components unless specified to do so. DO NOT use an analog ohmmeter. Use a DVOM with a maximum test current of 2 milliamps or less, at minimum resistance measurement range.
  4. After deployment, air bag surface may contain sodium hydroxide deposits, which may irritate skin. Sodium hydroxide is a product of gas generant combustion. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and a long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. Wash hands using mild soap and water.
  5. Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT try to service any air bag components. Manufacturer recommends that defective components should always be replaced with only original equipment parts.
  6. Factory installed fasteners have a special coating and are specifically designed for air bag components. Manufacturer recommends using original equipment replacement fasteners. DO NOT use substitutes.
  7. Clockspring must be replaced if driver's air bag is deployed.
  8. Each time a connector is disconnected, ensure it is clean and not damaged. Always pay particular attention to circuit being tested. Dirt, water and corrosion are the most common problems in connectors, causing voltage drop, open circuits and other improper operations.
  9. When performing electrical tests, prevent accidental shorting of terminals. Such shorts can damage fuses or components and may cause a second fault code to set, making diagnosis of original problem more difficult.
  10. After repairs are complete and ignition is turned to RUN or ON position, stay clear of air bag(s) to avoid injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
  11. Ensure air bag warning light is operating properly and system faults are not indicated. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures__system-operation-check) .
  12. When placing a undeployed (live) air bag on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
  13. When carrying a undeployed (live) air bag module, point trim cover away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment.
  14. Air bag module must be stored in its original special container until used for service. It must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks and electrical energy.
  15. The Air Bag Control Module (ACM)/Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) contains impact sensor which enables SRS to deploy air bags. DO NOT connect ACM/ORC connector while battery is connected. Ensure ACM/ORC and mounting bracket are securely installed to vehicle before connecting electrical connector.
  16. On vehicles with side air bags, use caution when working around "B" pillar or side air bags.
  17. Electrical sources should never be allowed near connector on back of air bag module.
  18. On Dakota, Durango, Ram Truck, Ram Van, and Ram Wagon, passenger air bag module contains an Argon gas canister. Canister is pressurized to more than 2500 psi. DO NOT puncture, incinerate, or bring into contact with electricity. DO NOT store at temperatures above 200°F (93°C).
  19. If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired and functions properly. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. If driveability problems exist, see appropriate computer relearn service information.
WARNINGWait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery cable before servicing air bag system. System reserve capacitor, integral to Air Bag Control Module (ACM)/Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), retains air bag system voltage for about 2 minutes after battery is disconnected. Servicing air bag system before 2 minutes may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

Disabling System

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF or LOCK position. On Concorde, Intrepid and 300M, disconnect and shield negative battery cable from right shock tower. On Sebring Convertible, Sebring Sedan, and Stratus Sedan, disconnect and shield negative battery cable on left shock tower. On all other models, disconnect and shield negative battery cable at battery.
  2. After disconnecting negative battery cable, wait at least 2 minutes for reserve capacitor to discharge before servicing air bag system.

Activating System

Ensure ignition switch is in OFF or LOCK position. Connect negative battery cable. From a position clear of air bag(s), turn ignition switch to RUN or ON position. Observe SRS/AIR BAG warning light. Warning light should come on for about 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If warning light fails to illuminate, or illuminates and stays on, a system malfunction exists. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

  1. When checking air bag system operation (also known as prove out system), and upon completion of each diagnostic test, check for faults in air bag system. To check system, turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN position. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds (3 seconds on Cougar) and then goes out, air bag system is functioning properly and no fault codes exist. NOTE: On regular cab and extra cab pickups, passenger air bag deactivation switch light must turn on and off in same manner as instrument cluster warning light during system operation check.
  2. If a fault is detected in air bag system during initial system check, AIR BAG warning light will either fail to light, stay on continuously, or flash. Flashing may not begin for up to 30 seconds after initial bulb check (ignition turned from OFF to RUN). If AIR BAG warning light flashes, indicating a fault in system, diagnose and repair as necessary.
  3. If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light fails to light, an audible tone will be heard, indicating AIR BAG warning light is out and service is required. The tone is a chime which sounds 5 sets of 5 beeps.

These precautions should be observed when working with SRS

  1. Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column components. Failure to do so may result in accidental air bag deployment and personal injury. See procedures under «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
  2. On vehicles equipped with side air bags and seat belt pretensioners, manufacturer recommends removing front seats from vehicle before performing any diagnostics or repairs to air bag or seat belt pretensioner system. For diagnostics on systems other than side air bags or seat belt pretensioners, seats may be left in vehicle as long as simulator tool is installed in place of side air bag and seat belt pretensioner harness.
  3. On all models except Villager, wait one minute after disabling SRS before working on vehicle. Backup power supply holds a deployment charge for approximately one minute after negative battery cable is disconnected. Servicing SRS before one minute may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  4. On Villager, backup power supply holds a deployment charge for approximately 3 minutes after positive battery cable is disconnected. Servicing SRS before 3-minute period may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  5. Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle is involved in a collision, inspect sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. If damaged, replace sensor.
  6. Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT service impact sensors, clockspring, diagnostic monitor or air bag module. Repairs are made by replacement only.
  7. If replacing deployed air bag module, always install a NEW air bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module.
  8. On vehicles with side air bags, use caution when working around "B" pillar. Side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the "B" pillar.
  9. Always wear safety glasses whenever servicing an air bag equipped vehicle or handling an air bag.
  10. When carrying a live air bag module, ensure air bag module and trim cover are pointed away from your body. This minimizes chance of injury in event of an accidental deployment.
  11. When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag module and trim cover facing up and away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  12. After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which may irritate skin. Sodium hydroxide is a product of gas generant combustion. Always wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed air bag. Wash your hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures.
  13. If scrapping a vehicle with an undeployed air bag module, air bag must be deployed.
  14. If a part is replaced and new part does not correct condition, reinstall original part and perform diagnostic procedure again.
  15. Never probe connectors on air bag module. Doing so may cause air bag deployment and/or personal injury.
  16. Instruction to disconnect always refers to connector. DO NOT remove component from vehicle if instructed to disconnect.
  17. After any servicing, ensure AIR BAG warning light does not indicate any fault codes. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
  18. Replace air bag module if trim cover (deployment doors) is marred or damaged. DO NOT repaint trim cover. Paint may degrade cover material. Replace air bag module as necessary. Ensure damaged air bag is deployed.
WARNINGWait one minute after disabling air bag system before working on vehicle (3 minutes on Villager). Backup power supply holds a deployment charge for about one minute after negative battery cable is disconnected. Servicing air bag system before one minute may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. If driveability problems exist, see appropriate computer relearn service information.

AIR BAG MODULE TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (FORD)

GENERAL MOTORS

WARNINGOn regular cab and extra cab pickup models, passenger air bag is equipped with dash-mounted ON/OFF switch. This switch will NOT disarm entire SIR system, and should NOT be used in place of disabling and activating air bag system procedure.

Prizm

Turn ignition switch from OFF to ON position. AIR BAG warning light should illuminate steady for 6 seconds, then go off. The following AIR BAG warning light conditions indicate possible SIR system faults.

  1. Light is on with ignition switch in OFF position.
  2. Light remains on after 6 seconds when ignition switch is turned from OFF to ON.
  3. Light flashes continuously when ignition switch is turned from OFF to ON.

Diagnose SIR system and repair as necessary.

Pickups With Passenger Air Bag

Turn ignition switch from OFF to ON position. Turn passenger air bag switch to OFF position, then back to ON position. With ON/OFF switch in ON position, AIR BAG warning light should flash 7 times, then turn off.

The following AIR BAG warning light conditions indicate possible SIR system faults.

  1. Light does not illuminate at all.
  2. Light remains illuminated when ignition is turned on.
  3. Light illuminates while vehicle is driven.

All Models Except Prizm & Pickups With Passenger Air Bag

Turn ignition switch from OFF to ON or RUN position. AIR BAG warning light should flash 7 times (6-10 times on DeVille) and then turn off.

The following AIR BAG warning light conditions indicate possible SIR system faults.

  1. Light does not illuminate at all.
  2. Light remains illuminated when ignition is turned on.
  3. Light illuminates while vehicle is driven.

SIR system faults are usually due to a disconnected/loose electrical connector caused by previous service on vehicle. Always check all Yellow SIR connectors for loose connections or damage.

If all connectors are okay, and AIR BAG warning light is still not operating properly, diagnose SIR system. Repair as necessary.

Observe the following service precautions when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. Failure to do this may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
  2. Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) maintains a reserve energy supply. Deployment power is available for as long as one minute after disconnecting battery power. Servicing vehicle before this time limit is reached may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  3. After repairs, stay well away from air bag inflator module(s), and turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure AIR BAG warning light is working properly and no system faults are indicated. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
  4. Use only new, original equipment replacement parts. DO NOT use salvaged parts for SIR system repairs.
  5. DO NOT expose air bag inflator modules to temperatures above 150°F (65°C).
  6. Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag.
  7. Air bag module must be stored in its original special container until it is ready to be used for service. It must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks or high electrical energy.
  8. When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover upward, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  9. After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide which can irritate skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and a long-sleeved shirt during clean-up. Wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures.
  10. When carrying a live air bag module, point trim cover away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment. DO NOT carry live air bag module by wiring harness or connector.
  11. DO NOT carry seat belt pretensioner by wiring harness or connector. Seat belt pretensioner can be carried by piston tube. When handling a live seat belt pretensioner, DO NOT touch seat belt pretensioner in cable area between buckle and mounting bolt hole. DO NOT cover pretensioner piston tube opening with hands or point open end at yourself or others.
  12. Coil assembly must be replaced whenever air bag is deployed. Replace Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), driver air bag module, passenger air bag module, side air bag module, side impact sensor or front impact sensor if any component has been dropped from a height of 3 feet or more.
  13. DO NOT attempt to repair Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), air bag inflator modules, impact sensors or steering wheel coil assembly. Service all components by replacement only.
  14. Electrical sources should never be allowed near inflator on back of air bag module.
  15. Avoid touching Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) terminals to prevent electrostatic discharge damage.
  16. If water enters the vehicle's interior and soaks the carpet up to level of Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), inspect the affected area and remove all evidence of water. Repair water damage, replace SDM, and replace harness connector. Failure to do this may result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  17. If air bag system is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired. DO NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in any way disable system from operating normally. If air bag system is not functional, park vehicle until repairs can be made.
WARNINGSensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) maintains a reserve energy supply. Deployment power is available for as long as one minute after disconnecting battery power. Servicing vehicle before this time limit is reached may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

Grand Cherokee, Liberty & Wrangler

The following precautions should be observed when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
Follow correct disposal procedures.
See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(/ford/explorer-sport-trac/i-2000-2005/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system-deactivation-procedures) .
  15. The Air Bag Control Module (ACM) contains an impact sensor which enables SRS to deploy air bags. DO NOT connect ACM connector while battery is connected. Ensure ACM and mounting bracket are securely installed to vehicle before connecting electrical connector.
  16. On vehicles equipped with side air bags, use caution when working around "B" pillar and/or side air bags.
  17. Electrical sources should never be allowed near connector on back of air bag module.
  18. Passenger air bag module contains an Argon gas canister.
System reserve capacitor, integral to Air Bag Control Module (ACM), retains air bag system voltage for about 2 minutes after battery is disconnected. Servicing air bag system before 2 minutes may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

Ensure ignition switch is in OFF or LOCK position. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable at battery. After disconnecting negative battery cable, wait at least 2 minutes for reserve capacitor to discharge before servicing air bag system.

Ensure ignition switch is in OFF or LOCK position. Connect negative battery cable. From a position clear of air bag(s), turn ignition switch to RUN or ON position. Observe SRS/AIR BAG warning light. Warning light should come on for 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If warning light fails to illuminate, or illuminates and stays on, a system malfunction exists. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
