REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | Turn air suspension (if equipped) off before hoisting, jacking or towing vehicle. Air suspension switch is located in right kick panel area. Failure to do so may result in unexpected inflation or deflation of air springs which may result in shifting of the vehicle. |
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the cotter pins. Remove the castellated nut. Remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link. (Scheme 5)
- Use the special tool to separate the steering sector shaft arm drag link. (Scheme 6)
- Remove the steering idler arm and bracket bolts. Remove the steering idler arm and bracket. (Scheme 7)
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. The idler arm has two grease fittings. Lubricate with Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B. Torque all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96306-S15729173112001040700000).

Raise and support vehicle. Remove bolts and skid plate, if equipped. Remove screws, push clips and lower radiator air deflector. Compress and slide clamps back. Disconnect hoses. Remove bolts and fluid cooler. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove fan and shroud. Remove drive belt. Disconnect power steering pressure hose. Drain power steering system. Remove power steering pump pulley. Remove power steering pressure hose. To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill and bleed air from system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING .
Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect power steering low pressure hose. Drain power steering system. Lower vehicle. Remove power steering lower pressure hose. To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill and bleed air from system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING .
- Remove fan and shroud. Remove drive belt. Disconnect power steering pressure hose from steering gear and catch fluid in drip pan. Turn air suspension off (if equipped). Raise and support vehicle. Drain power steering pump reservoir and disconnect reservoir hose from pump.
- Position power steering pump in vise. Remove power steering mounting bolts. Remove power steering pump pulley. Remove pump from vise. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96306-S15729173112001040700000) table.
- Refill and bleed air from system. See «HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-96306-S40143040332001040700000) .
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove bolts and skid plate, if equipped. Slide back plastic cover from intermediate steering shaft to steering gear. Remove intermediate shaft pinch bolt and intermediate steering shaft from steering gear.
- Remove cotter pin and castellated nut. Using pitman arm puller, separate steering sector shaft arm drag link. Place match mark between steering gear sector shaft and steering gear housing. Disconnect power steering lines at steering gear.
- Remove steering gear to frame mounting bolts, and remove steering gear. Secure steering gear in vise. Remove nut and lock washer. Using pitman arm puller, remove steering gear sector shaft arm. To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill and bleed air from system. See «HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-96306-S40143040332001040700000) .
Remove fan and shroud. Remove drive belt. Using power steering pump pulley remover, remove power steering pump pulley. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Remove fan and shroud. Remove drive belt. Remove 3 bolts, and disconnect power steering reservoir pump hose. Drain power steering system.
- Remove nuts and belt deflector. Remove 2 bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) power steering control valve actuator electrical connector. Remove mounting bolt.
- Lower vehicle. Position power steering pump forward. Remove power steering pump reservoir pump hose. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96306-S15729173112001040700000) . Refill and bleed air from system. See «HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-96306-S40143040332001040700000) .
Removal & Installation (4WD)
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the cotter pin. Remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link castellated nut.
- Use the Steering Arm Remover (211-003) to separate the steering sector shaft arm drag link.
- Mark a reference point between the steering gear sector shaft and steering gear sector shaft arm. (Scheme 8)
- Remove the steering gear sector shaft arm to the sector shaft nut.
- Use the steering arm remover to remove the steering gear sector shaft arm. (Scheme 9)
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96306-S15729173112001040700000).

To remove the Sector Arm Shaft, the Steering Gear must be removed from the vehicle. See POWER STEERING PUMP GEAR .
- Raise and suppor the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
- Mark a reference point from the tie-rod end to the front wheel spindle tie-rod adjusting sleeve. (Scheme 10)
- Loosen the toe set jam nut. (Scheme 11)
- Remove the cotter pin. Remove the inner tie-rod end castellated nut. (Scheme 12)
- On 2WD vehicles, use the special tool to separate the tie-rod end. (Scheme 13)
- On 4WD vehicles, use the separator to separate the tie-rod end. (Scheme 14)
- Remove the tie-rod end. Count and record rotations.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96306-S15729173112001040700000).

- Loosen the toe set jam nut. Remove the front wheel spindle tie-rod adjusting sleeve. Count and record the rotations.
