STEERING LINKAGE

The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the front wheel spindles. (Scheme 23)

FUNCTION TESTS (EVO CONTROL MODULE)

Note. The following function tests are used to retrieve DTCs, clear DTCs and run self-diagnostics. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX (SUPER STAR II TESTER) .

No Communication With Air Suspension Control Module

Possible source of problem may be circuitry, fuses or air suspension module. Go to TEST A

Possible source of problem may be EVO control module, fuse or circuitry. Go to TEST B .

Steering Effort Does Not Vary With Vehicle Speed

Possible source of problem may be output shaft speed sensor, circuitry, EVO control module or air suspension control module. Go to TEST G .

Steering Very Difficult/Very Easy

Possible source of problem may be power steering pump, power steering linkage, steering pivot or steering gear. Go to TEST H .

Steering Does Not Vary With Increased Steering Wheel Rotation

Possible source of problem may be power steering pump or power steering hoses. Go to TEST I .

Engine Stalls With High Steering Wheel Rotation

Possible source of problem may be idle control function of powertrain control module. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING

CAUTIONTurn air suspension (if equipped) off before hoisting, jacking or towing vehicle. Air suspension switch is located in right kick panel area. Failure to do so may result in unexpected inflation or deflation of air springs which may result in shifting of vehicle during servicing.

Note. Noise originating from the power steering system may be caused by air trapped in system. Follow this procedure to eliminate pump whine condition.

  1. Fill pump reservoir. Operate engine until power steering fluid reaches operating temperature. Stop engine. Recheck fluid level. Add fluid as necessary. Repeat procedure until fluid level stabilizes.
  2. Raise and support vehicle so front wheels are off ground. Start engine. Turn steering wheel from side to side several times. Avoid holding wheel in full left or right position. Fluid level should remain visible.
  3. Return wheels to center position. Operate engine for 2-3 minutes. Road test vehicle. Recheck fluid level. Fluid containing air has milky appearance. All air should be eliminated to obtain normal steering.
  4. Carefully remove fluid reservoir cap. Check and fill reservoir to FULL COLD mark. Remove ignition coil fuse to disable vehicle. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  5. Crank engine while turning steering wheel from side to side. DO NOT hold wheel on stops. Add fluid if necessary. Attach coil lead. Install vacuum tester onto reservoir.
  6. Start engine. Install vacuum adapter and apply 20-25 in. Hg vacuum to reservoir for approximately 3 minutes with engine idling. As air is purged from system, pump whine will tend to decrease. Maintain specified vacuum.
  7. Release vacuum. Check fluid level. Start engine. Turn steering wheel from side to side while checking for leaks. If pump whine is severe, repeat procedure until all air is removed.

POWER STEERING PUMP BELT

Belt tension is maintained by an automatic tensioner. If tension indicator mark is not between wear indicator marks on housing, replace belt.

IDLER ARM BRACKET

WARNINGThe electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the right hand kick panel area. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

POWER STEERING PUMP GEAR

WARNINGThe electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the right kick panel area. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

SECTOR SHAFT ARM

WARNINGThe electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the right kick panel area. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the cotter pins. Remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link castellated nuts.
  3. On 2WD vehicles, remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link. Use the Separator (204-D006) to separate the steering sector shaft arm drag link from the right hand tie-rod end, the steering idler arm and bracket, the steering gear sector shaft arm and the left hand tie-rod end. (Scheme 24)
  4. On 4WD vehicles, remove the tie-rod ends from the steering sector shaft arm drag link. Use the steering arm remover to separate the steering sector shaft arm drag link from right hand and left hand tie-rod ends. (Scheme 25)
  5. On 4WD vehicles, remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link. Use the steering arm remover tool to remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link. see scheme 10
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

TIE ROD END (INNER)

POWER STEERING PUMP

Note. Power steering pump is not serviceable. If service is needed, replace pump as an assembly.
