DOOR GLASS

Note. Before making any adjustments, remove the door armrest, trim panel and watershield. See DOOR TRIM PANEL .

  1. Loosen, but do not remove, upper regulator retaining nuts.
  2. Raise glass to full up position and tighten nuts to 7-10 ft. lbs. (9-14 N.m).
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, front glass retainer bolt.
  4. Lower glass to full down position and tighten retainer bolt to 7-10 ft. lbs. (9-14 N.m).

WINDOW MOTOR

With motor and drive assembly removed from vehicle, connect a fully charged battery to motor with an ammeter connected in series. Current draw from this no-load test should not exceed 5 amps at 12.8 volts, and should not fluctuate. Reverse battery connections. Motor should reverse rotation and current draw should remain the same. Motor must be replaced if current draw exceeds specifications.

Master Switch (Continental)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle. Test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and terminals No. 10 and 11.
  2. Press raised portion of rocker switch (closed position). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 and terminals No. 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11.
  3. Press depressed portion of rocker switch (open position). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and terminals No. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.
  4. Depress lock-out switch to detent position. Terminal No. 10 should not have continuity with any other terminal. (Scheme 20) If switch does not test as described, replace switch.

Single Switch (Continental)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle. Test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2 and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 5 should not have continuity with any other terminal.
  2. Press raised portion of rocker switch (closed position). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 5 and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 2 should not have continuity with any other terminal.
  3. Press depressed portion of rocker switch (open position). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 2 and terminals No. 4 and 5. Terminal No. 3 should not have continuity with any other terminal. (Scheme 20) If switch does not test as described, replace switch.

Master Switch (Cougar & Thunderbird)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle. Test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
  2. When ribbed portion of switch knob is pushed (closed position), there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2 and 3 and terminals No. 4, 5 and 6.
  3. When flat portion of switch knob is pushed (open position), there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 3 and 5 and terminals No. 2, 4 and 6. (Scheme 21) If switch does not test as described, replace switch.

Single Switch (Cougar & Thunderbird)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle. Test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2 and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 5 should show no continuity to any other terminal.
  2. When ribbed portion of switch knob is pushed (closed position), there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 5 and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 2 should show no continuity to any other terminal.

Master Switch (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. Connect one test lead on terminal No. 3. (Scheme 22) With all switches in NEUTRAL position, continuity should be present between terminal No. 3 and terminals No. 4 through 11.
  2. Push all 4 window switches forward and hold in that position. Terminals No. 5, 7, 9 and 11 should lose continuity to terminal No. 3. Push all 4 window switches rearward and hold in that position. Terminals No. 4, 6, 8 and 10 should lose continuity to terminal No. 3.
  3. Remove test lead from terminal No. 3 and connect it to terminal No. 2. With all switches in NEUTRAL position, only terminal No. 1 should have continuity to terminal No. 2.
  4. Push all 4 switches forward and hold in that position. Terminals No. 5, 7, 9 and 11 should have continuity to terminal No. 2. Push all 4 switches rearward and hold in that position. Terminals No. 4, 6, 8 and 10 should have continuity to terminal No. 2.
  5. Push lock-out switch to its detent position. Terminal No. 2 should not have continuity with any other terminal. If any switch does not test as indicated, replace complete switch assembly.

Single Switch (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 3, 2 and 5, and 4 and 6. (Scheme 26)
  2. Push switch downward. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 2, 4 and 5, and 1 and 3. Terminal No. 6 should not have continuity with any other terminal.
  3. Push switch upward. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 2, 3 and 5, and 4 and 6. Terminal No. 1 should not have continuity with any other terminal. If switch does not test as described, replace switch.

Master Switch (Escort & Tracer)

  1. To check for short(s) to ground, with key OFF, disconnect power window master switch. With ohmmeter, measure resistance between main switch connector (all wires except Black and Black/White) and ground. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms in any case, replace power window master switch. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms in any circuit, inspect and repair questionable circuit for short to ground. See POWER WINDOW MAIN SWITCH CIRCUITS (ESCORT & TRACER) table. (Scheme 23)
  2. To check for ground continuity, turn ignition off. Disconnect power window main switch. With an ohmmeter, measure resistance between Black wire at main switch and ground. If the resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace power window main switch. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire from switch to ground.

POWER WINDOW MAIN SWITCH CIRCUITS

Single Switch (Escort & Tracer)

  1. With ignition off and power window main switch disconnected, disconnect passenger switch from window that is not working.
  2. Measure resistance between main switch connector and passenger switch connector of window that is not working. See CONTINUITY BETWEEN SWITCHES (ESCORT & TRACER) table. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, service circuit in question for an open between switches. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3).   3. With passenger window switch and power window motor connector for window not working disconnected, measure resistance between passenger window switch connector and power window motor. If resistance between Red wire terminals or Dark Green wire terminals is less than 5 ohms, replace passenger switch. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, service the wire between switch and motor for an open. (Scheme 23)-8.

Single Switch (Mark VIII)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 6, and No. 4 and 7. (Scheme 28)
  2. Push switch downward. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 4 and 5, and No. 3 and 6.
  3. Push switch upward. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 6, and No. 4 and 5. If switch does not test as described, replace switch.

Master Switch (Mustang, Tempo & Topaz)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle and test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, continuity should be present between terminals No. 1 through 9, and terminals No. 10 and 11. (Scheme 29)
  2. With all switches pushed upward (closed position), continuity should be present between terminals No. 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 11, and terminals No. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9. With all switches pushed downward (open position), there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and terminals No. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.
  3. With lock-out depressed, there should be no continuity between terminal No. 11 and any other terminal. If switch fails any of these tests, replace master switch.

Single Switch (Mustang, Tempo & Topaz)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle and test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, check for continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2, and No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 5 should be disconnected from all other terminals. (Scheme 30)
  2. With switch pushed upward (closed position), continuity should be present between terminals No. 1 and 5, and No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 2 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
  3. With switch pushed in downward position (open position), continuity should be present between terminals No. 1 and 2, and No. 4 and 5. Terminal No. 3 should be disconnected from all other terminals. If switch fails any of these tests, replace switch.

Master Switch (Sable & Taurus)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle and test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11, and terminals No. 12 and 13. (Scheme 31)
  2. With lock-out switch button depressed into its detent position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
  3. With switch in raise right front position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
  4. With switch in raise right rear position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.
  5. With switch in raise left front position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 12 and 13.
  6. With switch in raise left rear position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10.
  7. With switch in lower right front position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 4, 12 and 13.
  8. With switch in lower right rear position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 11, 12 and 13.
  9. With switch in lower left front position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
  10. With switch in lower right rear position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 10, 12 and 13. If switch fails any of these tests, replace switch.

Single Switch (Sable & Taurus)

  1. Remove switch from vehicle and test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in NEUTRAL position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 6, and No. 4 and 7. (Scheme 32)

  3. Press depressed portion of switch (open position). There should be continuity between terminals No. 5 and 6, and No. 4 and 7. If switch fails any of these tests, replace switch.

DOOR TRIM PANEL

CAUTIONTo avoid breakage of door pull cover(s), insert a screwdriver diagonally between pull strap and chrome bracket. Snap out both sides then remove.

  1. Snap out 2 door pull strap retaining screw covers. Remove screws. (Scheme 33)or (Scheme 34).
  2. Remove 2 screws on front and rear side of door trim panel.
  3. Using the Trim Pad Removing Tool from Rotunda Molding/Trim Kit 107-00401 or equivalent, pry the trim panel retaining clips from the door inner panel.
  4. Remove window regulator switch housing from back of trim panel. Lift up housing and disconnect all connectors.
  5. Disconnect driver seat memory seat switch (driver's door only) if equipped.
  6. Twist out courtesy lamp wire assembly.

POWER WINDOW REGULATOR (EXCEPT TOWN CAR)

CAUTIONWhen servicing regulator assembly, regulator cable tension must not be altered. Cable tension is preset at production. Improper adjustment may result in premature regulator failure or erratic operation.
