- B1 CHECK THE BATTERY Check the battery condition and state of charge. Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) . Is the battery OK? Yes : GO to B2. No : INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
- B2 CHECK FOR NO KEY DETECTED MESSAGE IN THE MESSAGE CENTER NOTE: There are certain areas inside the vehicle where the IA key may not be detected and the message center displays NO KEY DETECTED. If the IA key is in the far outside edges of the interior (like in a door map pocket or above a sun visor) it might not be detected. Move the IA key to a different location and try to start the vehicle again. Check the message displayed in the message center while pressing the start/stop switch. Is NO KEY DETECTED displayed? Yes : REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS), WITH INTELLIGENT ACCESS (IA)»(ref-569608) to diagnose the NO KEY DETECTED concern. No : GO to B3.
- B3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) OPERATION Observe the IPC operation while pushing the start/stop switch. Do some indicators in the IPC illuminate? Yes : GO to B5 . No : GO to B4.
- B4 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCAN TOOL Carry out the network test using the scan tool. Do the BCM, IPC, and RFA module pass the network test? Yes : REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-569588) to diagnose no power in RUN. No : REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-569552) to diagnose no communication with the BCM, IPC and RFA module.
- B5 RETRIEVE DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM - Self-Test. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: RFA Module - Self-Test. Were DTCs retrieved on-demand during self-test? Yes : For all BCM DTCs, REFER to «BCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S05890081462013090600000) . For all PCM DTCs, REFER to «PCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S40624295432013090600000) . For RFA module DTCs, REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-569586) . No : GO to B6.
- B6 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE STOP LAMPS While observing the stop lamps, apply the brake pedal. Do the brake lamps illuminate? Yes : GO to B7. No : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-569589) to diagnose the brake lamps concern.
- B7 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BOO1) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. While observing the BOO1 PID, apply the brake pedal. Does the PID change to ON while applying the brake pedal? Yes : GO to B9 . No : GO to B8
- B8 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE PCM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551B (1.6L GTDI) or PCM C1381B (2.0L GTDI) or C175B (2.5L). For 1.6L GTDI, while applying the brake pedal, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-66 CCB08 (VT/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, while applying the brake pedal, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-66 CCB08 (VT/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, while applying the brake pedal, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-13 CCB08 (VT/WH) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B22 . No : REPAIR the circuit for an open.
- B9 CHECK THE PCM IN GEAR-TRANSMISSION IS APPLYING A LOAD TO ENGINE (IN_GEAR) PID . Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. While observing the IN_GEAR PID, place the gear selector in PARK and then NEUTRAL. Does the PID read NO in both positions? Yes : GO to B10. No : REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F35»(ref-569558) to diagnose the TR sensor.
- B10 CHECK THE ENGINE CRANKING (ENG_CRANK) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. Make sure the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL. While pressing the start/stop switch and the brake pedal, monitor the ENG_CRANK PID. Does the PID change from Inactive to Active? Yes : GO to B11. No : GO to 21 .
- B11 CHECK THE STARTER RELAY CONTROL OPERATION NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the «Special Tools»(ref-569607-S07460952992013090600000) table. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Flex Probe Kit for the test light probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test light probe directly on any connector. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Starter Relay. Ignition ON. Connect a test-light between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit Starter Relay Socket-1 CDC12 (BU/WH) Starter Relay Socket-2 CDC12 (YE) Make sure the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL. While pressing the start/stop switch and the brake pedal, observe the test light. Does the test light illuminate? Yes : GO to B12. No : GO to 19 .
- B12 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER RELAY Ignition OFF. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit Starter Relay Socket-3 SBB15 (WH/RD) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B13. No : VERIFY BJB fuse 13 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit for an open. If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-541395) article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- B13 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR OPERATION AT THE STARTER RELAY With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, momentarily connect a fused jumper wire between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit Starter Relay Socket-3 SBB15 (WH/RD) Starter Relay Socket 5 CDC35 (BU/WH) Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes : INSTALL a new starter relay. No : GO to B14.
- B14 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit Battery Positive Post Battery Positive Post - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B15. No : CLEAN or INSTALL new battery cables as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
- B15 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit Battery Positive Post Battery Positive Post Starter Motor Case Starter Motor Case Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B16. No : CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and make sure the starter motor is correctly mounted.
- B16 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C197A-1 ("B" terminal) SBF01 (RD) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B17. No : CLEAN or INSTALL new battery cables as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
- B17 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, momentarily connect a fused jumper wire between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C197A-1 ("B" terminal) SBF01 (RD) C197B-1 ("S" terminal) CDC25 (BN/GN) Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes : GO to B18. No : INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) , «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) .
- B18 CHECK FOR START INPUT AT THE STARTER Connect: Starter Relay. Disconnect: Starter Solenoid C197B ("S" terminal). With the gear selector in PARK, while pressing the start/stop switch, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C197B-1 ("S" terminal) CDC25 (BN/GN) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : CLEAN the starter solenoid ("S" terminal) and connector C197B-1. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. No : REPAIR the circuit for an open.
- B19 CHECK THE PCM START CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551B (1.6L GTDI) or PCM C1381B (2.0L GTDI) or C175B (2.5L). For 1.6L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-43 CDC12 (YE) - Ground C1551B-62 CDC12 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-43 CDC12 (YE) - Ground C1381B-62 CDC54 (WH/GN) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-7 CDC12 (YE) - Ground C175B-37 CDC54 (WH/GN) - Ground Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to B20. No : REPAIR the affected circuit for a short to ground.
- B20 CHECK THE PCM START CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN For 1.6L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-43 CDC12 (YE) Starter Relay Socket-2 CDC12 (YE) C1551B-62 CDC12 (BU/WH) Starter Relay Socket-1 CDC12 (BU/WH) For 2.0L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-43 CDC12 (YE) Starter Relay Socket-2 CDC12 (YE) C1381B-62 CDC54 (WH/GN) Starter Relay Socket-1 CDC12 (BU/WH) For 2.5L, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-7 CDC12 (YE) Starter Relay Socket-2 CDC12 (YE) C175B-37 CDC54 (WH/GN) Starter Relay Socket-1 CDC12 (BU/WH) Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to B22 . No : REPAIR the affected circuit for an open.
- B21 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE PCM Ignition OFF. For 1.6L GTDI, while pressing the start/stop switch, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-47 CDC12 (BU/YE) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, while pressing the start/stop switch, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, while pressing the start/stop switch, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-16 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B22. No : REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-569588) to diagnose the start/stop switch.
- B22 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)»(ref-569601-S18764170622013072700000) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

- D1 RETRIEVE THE BCM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Is DTC B10E5:11 recorded? Yes : GO to D2. No : For DTC B10E5:15 GO to D4 . For all other DTCs REFER to «BCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S05890081462013090600000) .
- D2 CHECK THE PCM FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Clear BCM Continuous DTCs. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551B (1.6L GTDI), C1381B (2.0L GTDI) or C175B (2.5L). Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Was DTC C113A:11 retrieved on-demand during self-test? Yes : GO to D3. No : GO to D7 .
- D3 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: BCM C2280A. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C2280A-32 CE436 (VT/OG) - Ground Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to D6 . No : REPAIR the circuit.
- D4 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: BCM C2280A. Disconnect: PCM C1551B (1.6L GTDI), C1381B (2.0L GTDI) or C175B (2.5L). Ignition ON. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-28 CE436 (VT/OG) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-28 CE436 (VT/OG) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-35 CE436 (VT/OG) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to D5.
- D5 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-28 CE436 (VT/OG) C2280A-32 CE436 (VT/OG) For 2.0L GTDI, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-28 CE436 (VT/OG) C2280A-32 CE436 (VT/OG) For 2.5L, measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-35 CE436 (VT/OG) C2280A-32 CE436 (VT/OG) Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to D6. No : REPAIR the circuit for an open.
- D6 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the BCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-569586) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)»(ref-569601-S18764170622013072700000) (303-14). No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

- E1 RETRIEVE THE PCM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM - Self-Test. Is DTC P2535 recorded? Yes : GO to E2. No : For all other DTCs, REFER to «PCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S40624295432013090600000) or «BCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S05890081462013090600000) .
- E2 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551B (1.6L GTDI), C1381B (2.0L GTDI) or C175B (2.5L). Ignition ON. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-16 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : GO to E3 No : GO to E7 .
- E3 CHECK THE CRANK DETECT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE WITH IGNITION SWITCH OR START/STOP SWITCH DISCONNECTED Ignition OFF. Disconnect: C250 Ignition Switch or C2195 Start/Stop Switch. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-16 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : With IA GO to E4 Without IA, REPAIR the circuit. No : INSTALL a new ignition switch or start/stop switch. Section 211-05.
- E4 CHECK THE CRANK DETECT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE WITH RFA DISCONNECTED Ignition OFF. Disconnect: C4392D RFA. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-16 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : GO to E5 No : INSTALL a new RFA. Section 419-10.
- E5 CHECK THE CRANK DETECT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE WITH BCM DISCONNECTED Ignition OFF. Disconnect: C2280C BCM. For 1.6L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1551B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.0L GTDI, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1381B-47 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground For 2.5L, measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C175B-16 CDC35 (BU/WH) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to E6
- E6 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the BCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-569586) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- E7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)»(ref-569601-S18764170622013072700000) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
PINPOINT TEST F: THE REMOTE START IS INOPERATIVE
- F1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PASSIVE KEY Press all buttons on the Passive key and check for the correct operation. Is the remote start the only function that is inoperative? Yes : GO to F2. No : REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS - WITH WINDOW ONE-TOUCH UP»(ref-569610) to diagnose the RKE concern.
- F2 CHECK THE ENGINE FOR CRANKING With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, attempt to crank by pressing the start/stop switch and the brake pedal. Did the engine crank? Yes : GO to F3. No : This not a remote start issue, to diagnose the no crank condition GO to «PINPOINT TEST B»(ref-569607-S14828360722013072700000) .
- F3 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATED ENGINE WARNING LAMPS With the engine running, check the instrument cluster for illuminated warning lamps. Are any engine warning lamps illuminated? Yes : CARRY OUT self-test of the PCM. DIAGNOSE and REPAIR any DTCs present. REFER to «PCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S40624295432013090600000) . No : GO to F4.
- F4 RETRIEVE BCM DTCs Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Are any DTCs present? Yes : For BCM DTCs REFER to «BCM DTC Chart»(ref-569607-S05890081462013090600000) . No : GO to F5.
- F5 CONFIRM THE REMOTE START FUNCTION IS ENABLED Ignition ON. Check the message center and confirm the remote start function is enabled. Is the remote start function enabled? Yes : GO to F6. No : ENABLE the remote start function.
- F6 CHECK THE BATTERY MONITORING SENSOR CONNECTION Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646. Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals and repair as necessary. Connect: Battery Monitoring Sensor C1646. Make sure the connector seats correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : GO to F7. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- F7 CHECK THE REMOTE START PRECONDITIONS FOR CORRECT OPERATION NOTE: The Body Control Module (BCM) acknowledges the remote start request and that all preconditions have been met by providing 2 short flashes of the turn indicators. Check the vehicle for the following: Hood is closed with no DTC present. Ignition must be off Vehicle must be in PARK. Remote start feature is configured ON. Remote start events do not exceed allowed time (2 events in a 1 hour duration). Have all preconditions for remote start been met and is the remote start system still inoperative? Yes : REPLACE Passive key. REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS), WITH INTELLIGENT ACCESS (IA)»(ref-569608) . RETEST for correct operation. If remote start is still inoperative, GO to F8. No : CARRY OUT the required precondition as necessary.
- F8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Repair: corrosion install new connector or terminals - clean module pins damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSB addresses this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)»(ref-569601-S18764170622013072700000) . CLEAR all DTCs in all modules. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
Starter Motor - Feed Circuit Test
- Make sure the battery is fully charged. Carry out a battery load test. Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
- Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter positive lead to the battery positive (+) post. Connect the negative lead to the starter solenoid "M" terminal.
- Engage the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage. The voltage reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
- If the voltage reading is 0.5 volt or less, go to the «STARTER MOTOR-GROUND CIRCUIT»(ref-569607-S34079543002013072700000) - component test.
- If the voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, this indicates excessive resistance in the connections, the positive battery cable or in the starter solenoid. Move the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter negative lead to the starter solenoid "B" terminal and repeat the test. If the voltage reading at the "B" terminal is lower than 0.5 volt, the concern is either in the connections at the starter solenoid or in the solenoid contacts.
- Remove the cables from solenoid "B" "S" and "M" terminals. Clean the cables and connections and reinstall the cables to the correct terminals. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 . If the voltage drop reading is still greater than 0.5 volt when checked at the "M" terminal or less than 0.5 volt when checked at the "B" terminal, the concern is in the solenoid contacts. INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) .
- If the voltage reading taken at the solenoid "B" terminal is still greater than 0.5 volt after cleaning the cables and connections at the solenoid, the concern is either in the positive (+) battery cable connection or in the positive battery cable itself.
- Clean the positive (+) battery cable connection. If this does not solve the problem, install a new positive battery cable, Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
Starter Motor - Ground Circuit Test
A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows
- Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
- If the voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery, the body ground connections and the starter ground connection. Retest.
- If the voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, install a new cable, Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) . If the voltage reading is less than 0.5 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor, Refer to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) .
Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection

- Remove the starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) .
- Check the wear patterns on the starter drive gear and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. If the wear pattern is normal, install the starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) . Visual check.
- If the starter drive gear and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear are not fully meshing and the gears are scored or damaged, install a new starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569607-S07569985962013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569607-S15799749212013072700000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 2.5L»(ref-569607-S24143822182013072700000) . If necessary, install a new flywheel or flexplate. Refer to «ENGINE - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569555) , «ENGINE - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569556) , or «ENGINE - 2.5L»(ref-569568) .
