Power Transfer Unit (Ptu): Removal & Installation Ford Escape II

Removal

Note. A new Power Transfer Unit (PTU) intermediate shaft seal must be installed whenever the intermediate shaft or PTU is removed from the vehicle.

Scheme 1

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-344051) .
2. Remove the PTU. For additional information, refer to «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU)»(ref-344082-S31668101802009101600000) .
3. Using the Collet and Slide Hammer, remove and discard the deflector.
4. Remove the seal using the Slide Hammer and a suitable seal puller inserted into the groove seal.

Scheme 2

1. Using the Halfshaft Oil Seal Installer, Rear Axle Oil Seal Installer and Handle, install the cover seal. The seal is correctly installed if it is flush with the PTU case cover.
2. Using the Handle and PTO Driven Gear Oil Seal Installer, install the deflector.
3. Install the PTU. For additional information, refer to «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU)»(ref-344082-S31668101802009101600000) .

Note. This procedure applies to vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles.

1. Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) rear output shaft flange. For additional information, refer to «OUTPUT FLANGE»(ref-344082-S29348884832009101600000) .
2. Remove the deflector.
3. Using a suitable tool, remove the PTU output shaft oil seal.

Scheme 3

1. Using the PTO Drive Gear Outer Oil Seal Installer, install the PTU output shaft oil seal.
2. Install the deflector.
3. Install the PTU output shaft flange. For additional information, refer to «OUTPUT FLANGE»(ref-344082-S29348884832009101600000) .

Note. This procedure applies to vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles.

1. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-344083) .
2. Using the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture to hold the flange, remove the pinion nut.
3. Using a suitable tool such as Snap-on® CJ2001, remove the PTU rear output shaft flange.

Installation

1. Install the PTU rear output shaft flange to engage the spline as previously marked. Install the PTU rear output shaft flange.
2. Using the Drive Pinion Flange Holding Fixture, install the pinion nut.
3. Install the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-344083) .

Note. This procedure applies to vehicles equipped with manual transaxles.

1. Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). For additional information, refer to «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU)»(ref-344082-S31668101802009101600000) .
2. Using a slide hammer with a 3-jaw puller attachment, remove the PTU tube.

1. Inspect the condition of the PTU vent hole. By hand, insert the new PTU vent into the PTU cover and measure the distance between the PTU cover and the vent as indicated. If the measurement is less than specification, install a new PTU.
2. Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the PTU vent where indicated.
3. Using the Vent Tube Installer, install the PTU vent.
4. Measure the depth of the PTU vent. If the vent is too high, repeat Step 3 .
5. Install the PTU vent boot.
6. Install the PTU. For additional information, refer to «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU)»(ref-344082-S31668101802009101600000) .

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-344051) .
2. Drain the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). For additional information, refer to «POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) DRAINING AND FILLING»(ref-344082-S01155393472009101600000) .
3. Remove the front RH intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS»(ref-344085) .
4. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-344083) .
5. Remove the 4 bolts and the crossmember brace. Vehicles equipped with 3.0L
6. Remove the catalytic converter - 3.0L manifold. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-344061) . All vehicles
7. Remove the 3 PTU heat shield bolts and the PTU heat shield. Vehicles equipped with 2.5L and Hybrid
8. Remove the 2 exhaust bracket nuts. Hybrid vehicles
9. Remove the 2 bolts and the exhaust bracket. All vehicles
10. Remove the 6 PTU-to-engine bracket bolts and the bracket.
11. Disconnect the PTU vent tube and position it aside.
12. Remove the 4 PTU-to-transaxle bolts.
13. Remove the PTU.
