Inspection and Verification
- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. - If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-344076) , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition is ON. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-344076) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-344076) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record continuous memory DTCs.
- Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DTC CHART»(ref-344080-S14474660812009101600000) . For all other DTCs, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-344077) .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-344080-S41142962662009101600000) .

Pinpoint Test A: No Power In All Ignition Switch Positions
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE or SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER , Power Distribution/SJB for schematic and connector information.
Note. Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.

- A1 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT SJB FUSE 27 (20A) Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB Fuse 27 (20A). Measure the voltage between SJB fuse 27, input side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A2 . No: INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-344077) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE IGNITION SWITCH Connect: SJB fuse 27 (20A). Disconnect: Ignition Switch Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-4, circuit SBP27 (BU/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: VERIFY SJB fuse 27 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit SBP27 (BU/RD). If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
PINPOINT TEST B: NO POWER IN ACC

- B1 CHECK THE ACC CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN NOTE: To access the SJB connector, the floor console must be removed. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280A. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-6, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and SJB C2280A-3 circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to B2 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC33 (VT/GN). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B2 CHECK THE ACC CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-6, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to B3 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC33 (VT/GN). TEST the system for normal operation.
- B3 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Carry out the Ignition Switch - Electrical Component Test. Refer to «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) for component testing. Is the ignition switch OK? Yes: GO to B4 . No: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- B4 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Check SJB C2280A for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. spread terminals. Connect: SJB C2280A. Make sure the connector is seated correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-344077) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
Pinpoint Test C: No Power in RUN
Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE or SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER , Power Distribution/SJB for schematic and connector information.

- C1 ISOLATE THE RUN CIRCUIT Ignition In ACC. Operate the windshield wipers. Do the windshield wipers operate? Yes: GO to C2 . No: GO to «PINPOINT TEST B»(ref-344080-S32806403352009101600000) .
- C2 CHECK THE RUN/START CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: All vehicles: Ignition Switch C250. Disconnect: All vehicles: SJB C2280B. Disconnect: All vehicles: SJB C2280E. Disconnect: All vehicles: PCM C175B. Disconnect: All vehicles: BJB Fuse 35 (5A). Disconnect: Late build non-hybrid and all hybrid vehicles: BJB Fuse 25 (5A). Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and: All vehicles: SJB C2280B-45, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side. All vehicles: SJB C22880E-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side. All vehicles: PCM CC175B-42, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side. All vehicles: BJB fuse 35 (5A), circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), input side. Late build non-hybrid and all hybrid vehicles: BJB fuse 25 (5A), circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), input side. Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? Yes: All vehicles: VERIFY BJB fuse 35 (5A) is OK. - C3 CHECK THE RUN/START CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C4 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC34 (WH/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C4 CHECK THE PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND Connect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to C5 . No: GO to C6 .
- C5 CHECK THE SJB FOR SHORT TO GROUND Connect: SJB C2280B. Connect: SJB 32280E. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: INSPECT the ignition switch connector for pushed-out pins, spread and bent terminals. REPAIR as necessary. If the connector is OK, INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to C7 .
- C6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Disconnect: All PCM Connectors. Check the connectors for: corrosion. spread terminals. pushed-out pins. Connect: All PCM Connectors. Connect: All SJB Connectors. Connect: All SJB Fuses. Connect: Ignition Switch C250. Make sure the connectors seat properly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.

- D1 ISOLATE THE START CIRCUIT Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - SJB. Ignition ON. Monitor the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) derived ignition state-RUN (IGN R ECU) PID. Does the PID display "yes" with the ignition in the RUN position? Yes: GO to D2 . No: GO to «PINPOINT TEST C»(ref-344080-S00198225962009101600000) .
- D2 ISOLATE THE IGNITION SWITCH Ignition OFF. Carry out the Ignition Switch - Electrical Component Test. Refer to «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) for component testing. Does the ignition switch pass the test? Yes: GO to D3 . No: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- D3 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: All vehicles: Ignition Switch C250. Disconnect: All vehicles: PCM C1755B. Disconnect: Hybrid vehicles: SJB C2280B. Disconnect: Non-hybrid vehicles: OTIS Diode. - D4 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-7, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to D5 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). TEST the system for normal operation.
- D5 CHECK THE PCM FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Connect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-7, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: Hybrid vehicles: GO to D6 . Non-hybrid vehicles: GO to D8 . No: GO to D7 .
- D6 CHECK THE SJB FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Connect: SJB C2280B. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-7, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to D12 .
- D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Disconnect: All PCM Connectors. Check the connectors for: corrosion. spread terminals. pushed-out pins. Connect: All PCM Connectors. Connect: All SJB Connectors. Connect: Ignition Switch C250. Make sure the connectors seat properly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - HYBRID»(ref-344103) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D8 CHECK THE OTIS CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Disconnect: Starter Relay. Measure the resistance between OTIS diode, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), output side and: SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side. PCM C175B-37, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side. starter relay, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), cavity 2. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to D9 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC54 (WH/GN). TEST the system for normal operation.
- D9 CHECK THE OTIS CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between OTIS diode, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), output side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to D10 . No: REPAIR circuit CDC54 (WH/GN). TEST the system for normal operation.
- D10 ISOLATE THE SJB Connect: SJB C2280B. Measure the resistance between OTIS diode, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), output side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: GO to D11 . No: GO to D12 .
- D11 ISOLATE THE PCM Connect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between OTIS diode, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), output side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new OTIS diode. TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to D13 .
- D12 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Check the connectors for: corrosion. spread terminals. pushed-out pins. Connect: All PCM Connectors. Connect: All SJB Connectors. Connect: OTIS Diode. Connect: Ignition Switch C250. Make sure the connectors seat properly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-344077) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D13 CHECK THE PCM FOR CORRECT OPERATION Disconnect: All PCM Connectors. Check the connectors for: corrosion. spread terminals. pushed-out pins. Connect: All PCM Connectors. Connect: All SJB Connectors. Connect: OTIS Diode. Connect: Ignition Switch C250. Make sure the connectors seat properly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. 2.5L engine: REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.5L»(ref-344104) . 3.0L engine: REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-344105) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.

- E2 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH ELECTRICAL FUNCTION Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Carry out the Ignition Switch component test. Refer to «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) for component testing. Did the ignition switch pass the component test? Yes: GO to E3 . No: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- E3 CHECK THE SJB START POWER OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Connect: Ignition Switch C Disconnect: SJB Fuse 28 (5A). Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB fuse 28 (5A), circuit CBP28 (GY/VT), output side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E11 . No: Non-Hybrid: GO to E4 . Hybrid: GO to E9 .
- E4 CHECK THE SJB START POWER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E5 . No: GO to E13 .
- E5 ISOLATE THE SJB START POWER CIRCUIT Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS) Diode. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E6 . No: GO to E8 .
- E6 CHECK THE PCM IGNITION SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Starter Relay. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E7 . No: INSTALL a new starter relay. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- E7 CHECK THE PCM FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC54 (WH/GN), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CDC54 (WH/GN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No: GO to E15 .
- E8 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH START POWER OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between BJB OTIS diode, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), input side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No: GO to E15 .
- E9 CHECK THE SJB IGNITION SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC35 Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E10 . No: GO to E13 .
- E10 ISOLATE THE PCM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1 Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-32, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No: GO to E15 .
- E11 ISOLATE THE ACM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: ACM C240A. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB fuse 28 (5A), circuit CBP28 (GY/VT), output side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: GO to E12 . No: GO to E14 .
- E12 ISOLATE THE SJB Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280B-2, circuit CBP28 (GY/VT), harness side and ground. Is any voltage present? Yes: REPAIR circuit CBP28 (GY/VT). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No: GO to E13 .
- E13 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect: All SJB Connectors. Check the SJB connectors for: corrosion. pushed-out pins. spread terminals. - F15 CHECK SJB FUSE 34 (5A) OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB Fuse 34 (5A). Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - SJB. Monitor the IGN___R___ECU PID while cycling the ignition switch through each position. Does the PID display YES when the ignition switch is moved through all switch positions? Yes: GO to F16 . No: REPAIR circuit CBP34 (VT/BN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- F16 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH RUN OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: SJB C2280B. Disconnect: SJB C2280D. Disconnect: SJB C2280E. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between SJB C2280E-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and ground while moving the ignition switch through all switch positions. Is voltage present when the ignition switch is moved through all switch positions? Yes: GO to F17 . No: GO to F18 .
- F17 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Carry out the Ignition Switch component test. Refer to «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) for component testing. Did the ignition switch pass the component test? - G1 CHECK FOR AN ENERGIZED KEY REMOVAL INHIBIT SOLENOID Remove SJB fuse 27 (20A). Attempt to turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position and then back to the OFF position and remove the key. Does the ignition lock cylinder turn to the OFF position and can the key be removed? Yes: GO to G4 . No: GO to G2 .
- G2 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR MECHANICAL DAMAGE Remove the ignition switch. Refer to «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-344080-S09166045452009101600000) . Attempt to turn the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the ignition key. Does the ignition lock cylinder turn to the OFF position and can the key be removed? - G3 CHECK THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER FOR MECHANICAL DAMAGE Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(ref-344107) . Rotate the ignition lock cylinder through all positions using the key. Does the ignition lock cylinder freely rotate through all positions and can the key be removed from the lock cylinder? Yes: INSTALL a new steering column lock module. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN LOCK MODULE»(ref-344080-S29424291902009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. - G5 ISOLATE THE SHORT TO GROUND IN THE KEY REMOVAL INHIBIT SOLENOID CIRCUIT Disconnect: Floor Shifter C2096. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-3, circuit CDC41 (WH/BN), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new selector lever. REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS - 6F35»(ref-344100) or «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS - HYBRID»(ref-344101) . TEST the system for normal operation.
