Removal and Installation

WARNINGWhen performing maintenance on the starting system, be aware that heavy gauge leads are connected directly to the battery. Make sure protective caps are in place when maintenance is completed.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Remove the starter solenoid wire nut. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  4. Remove the starter solenoid battery cable nut and disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal cover and cables. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer and position aside the wiring harness.
  6. Remove the ground strap nut and position aside the strap. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the 2 starter motor stud bolts. Install the upper and lower starter motor stud bolts finger-tight. Tighten the upper bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). Tighten the lower bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
  3. Remove the starter motor solenoid terminal cover.
  4. Remove the starter motor solenoid wire nut and position aside the wire. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  5. Remove the starter motor solenoid battery cable nut and position aside the cable. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  6. Remove the 2 starter motor bolts and the starter motor. Install the upper and lower starter motor bolts finger-tight. Tighten the upper bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft). Tighten the lower bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
