Normal Operation

The exterior mirror control switch receives voltage from Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 12 (7.5A) through circuit SBP12 (GN/RD) and ground through circuit GD182 (BK/GY). The exterior mirror control switch uses circuit CPM23 (GY) as the common circuit for both exterior mirror up/down and right/left movement.

This pinpoint test is used to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring (terminals or connectors
  2. Fuse
  3. Exterior mirror control switch

  1. A1 CHECK CIRCUIT SBP12 (GN/RD) FOR VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C527. Measure the voltage between exterior mirror control switch C527-1, circuit SBP12 (GN/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A2 . No: INSPECT SJB fuse 12 (7.5A). If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. A2 CHECK CIRCUIT GD182 (BK/GY) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between exterior mirror control switch C527-3, circuit GD182 (BK/GY), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to A3 . No: REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUIT CPM23 (GY) FOR AN OPEN

  1. Disconnect: LH Exterior Mirror C520.
  2. Measure the resistance between exterior mirror control switch C527-6, circuit CPM23 (GY), harness side and LH exterior mirror C520-2, circuit CPM23 (GY), harness side.
  3. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
  1. Yes: INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-344150-S37437440892009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. No: REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

Under normal operation, the exterior mirror control switch uses circuit CPM23 (GY) as the common circuit for both of the exterior mirrors up/down and right/left movement.

This pinpoint test is used to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Exterior mirror control switch
  3. Exterior mirror motor
  4. Exterior mirror

The exterior mirror control switch uses circuits CPM14 (GY/BN), CPM15 (VT/OG), CPM18 (GN/BN), CPM19 (GY/OG) and CPM23 (GY) to control the exterior mirror movement.

  1. When the LH/RH exterior mirror motor receives voltage through circuit CPM15 (VT/OG)/CPM19 (GY/OG) and ground through circuit CPM23 (GY), the LH/RH exterior mirror motor will operate leftward.
  2. When the LH/RH exterior mirror motor receives ground through circuit CPM15 (VT/OG)/CPM19 (GY/OG) and voltage through circuit CPM23 (GY), the LH/RH exterior mirror motor will operate rightward.
  3. When the LH/RH exterior mirror motor receives voltage through circuit CPM14 (GY/BN)/CPM18 (GN/BN) and ground through circuit CPM23 (GY), the LH/RH exterior mirror motor will operate downward.
  4. When the LH/RH exterior mirror motor receives ground through circuit CPM14 (GY/BN)/CPM18 (GN/BN) and voltage through circuit CPM23 (GY), the LH/RH exterior mirror motor will operate upward.

This pinpoint test is used to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Exterior mirror control switch
  3. Exterior mirror motor
  4. Exterior mirror

  1. C1 CHECK THE MIRROR MOVEMENT (LEFT/RIGHT) Operate the RH and LH exterior mirrors in the right and left direction using the exterior mirror control switch. Do the exterior mirrors move left and right? Yes: GO to C2 . No: GO to C4 .
  2. C2 CHECK THE MIRROR MOVEMENT (UP/DOWN) Operate the RH and LH exterior mirrors in the up and down direction using the exterior mirror control switch. Do the exterior mirrors move up and down? Yes: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to C3 .
  3. C3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE MIRROR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Inoperative Exterior Mirror C520 (LH) or C601 (RH). Ignition ON. NOTE: Position the exterior mirror control switch to the LH or RH mirror position. Whalm operating the exterior mirror control switch in the downward position, measure the voltage between ground and exterior mirror: LH exterior mirror: C520-1, circuit CPM14 (GY/BN), harness side RH exterior mirror: C601-1, circuit CPM18 (GN/BN), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: CHECK the LH or RH exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motor for open or shorted circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new LH or RH exterior mirror. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR»(ref-344150-S04743084952009101600000) . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror motor. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR MOTOR»(ref-344150-S35869560082009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to C5 .
  4. C4 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE MIRROR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Inoperative Exterior Mirror C520 (LH) or C601 (RH). Ignition ON. NOTE: Position the exterior mirror control switch to the LH or RH mirror position. While operating the exterior mirror control switch in the leftward position, measure the voltage between ground and inoperative exterior mirror: LH exterior mirror: C520-3, circuit CPM15 (VT/OG), harness side. RH exterior mirror: C601-3, circuit CPM19 (GY/OG), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: CHECK the LH or RH exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motor for open or shorted circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new LH or RH exterior mirror. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR»(ref-344150-S04743084952009101600000) . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror motor. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR MOTOR»(ref-344150-S35869560082009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to C6 .
  5. C5 CHECK FOR AN OPEN TO THE INOPERATIVE MIRROR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C527. LH exterior mirror: Measure the resistance between LH exterior mirror C520-1, circuit CPM14 (GY/BN), harness side and exterior mirror control switch C527-5, circuit CPM14 (GY/BN), harness side. RH exterior mirror: Measure the resistance between RH exterior mirror C601-1, circuit CPM18 (GN/BN), harness side and exterior mirror control switch C527-2, circuit CPM18 (GN/BN), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-344150-S37437440892009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. C6 CHECK FOR AN OPEN TO THE INOPERATIVE MIRROR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Exterior Mirror Control Switch C527. LH exterior mirror: Measure the resistance between exterior mirror control switch C527-8, circuit CPM15 (VT/OG), harness side and LH exterior mirror C520-3, circuit CPM15 (VT/OG), harness side. RH exterior mirror: Measure the resistance between exterior mirror control switch C527-7, circuit CPM19 (GY/OG), harness side and RH exterior mirror C601-3, circuit CPM19 (GY/OG), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new exterior mirror control switch. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR CONTROL SWITCH»(ref-344150-S37437440892009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

Under normal operation, when the rear window defrost switch is depressed to the ON position, the rear window defrost relay closes and voltage is supplied to Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 1 (15A). The heated exterior mirrors receive voltage from BJB fuse 1 (15A) through circuit CBB01 (BU). Ground is supplied to the LH and RH heated exterior mirrors through circuit GD149 (BK/GY).

This pinpoint test is used to diagnose the following

  1. Fuse
  2. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  3. Exterior mirror glass
  4. Exterior mirror

  1. D1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST SYSTEM with the engine running, depress the rear window defrost switch to the ON position. Place hand on the rear window to verify that the rear window heats up. Does the rear window defrost system operate? Yes: GO to D2 . No: REFER to «GLASS, FRAMES AND MECHANISMS»(ref-344144) to diagnose the rear window defrost system.
  2. D2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR MIRROR Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Inoperative Exterior Mirror C520 (LH) or C601 (RH). With the engine running, depress the rear window defrost switch to the ON position. Measure the voltage between ground and inoperative exterior mirror: LH exterior mirror: C520-4, circuit CBB01 (BU), harness side. RH exterior mirror: C601-4, circuit CBB01 (BU), harness side. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to D3 . No: INSPECT BJB fuse 1 (15A). If OK, GO to D4 . If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - ESCAPE»(ref-311193) or «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - MARINER»(ref-311218) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  3. D3 CHECK THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR MIRROR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Measure the resistance between ground and inoperative exterior mirror: LH exterior mirror: C520-5, circuit GD149 (BK/GY), harness side. RH exterior mirror: C601-5, circuit GD149 (BK/GY), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: CHECK the LH or RH exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motor for open or shorted circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new LH or RH exterior mirror. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR»(ref-344150-S04743084952009101600000) . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror glass. REFER to «EXTERIOR MIRROR GLASS»(ref-344150-S21422731742009101600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. D4 CHECK CIRCUIT CBB01 (BU) FOR AN OPEN

  1. Ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Relay.
  3. Measure the resistance between BJB rear window defrost relay pin 5, harness side and inoperative exterior mirror: LH exterior mirror: C520-4, circuit CBB01 (BU), harness side. RH exterior mirror: C601-4, circuit CBB01 (BU), harness side.
  4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
  1. Yes: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. No: REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

The interior auto-dimming rear view mirror has 2 photoelectric sensors that detect forward and rearward light conditions. Based on these inputs, the automatic dimming feature adjusts the reflectance level of the interior rear view mirror glass to eliminate unwanted glare. When the forward sensor detects daytime conditions, the rearward sensor is inactive and the interior rear view mirror stays in a high reflectance mode. When the forward sensor detects nighttime conditions, the rearward sensor is active and detects glare from the headlights of vehicles approaching from the rear or other glare-producing light sources.

When the ignition is in the RUN or ACC position, voltage is supplied to the interior auto-dimming interior mirror from Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 41 (15A). When the vehicle is in REVERSE, voltage is supplied to the interior auto-dimming mirror in order to disable the auto dimming feature.

If the forward or rearward sensors are blocked, the automatic dimming interior mirror might not work correctly.

The interior auto-dimming mirror receives voltage from Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 41 (15A) through circuit CBP43 (GY) and ground from circuit GD182 (BK/GY). When the vehicle is placed in REVERSE, voltage is supplied to the interior mirror through circuit CBB07 (GN/BU) in order to the turn the dimming feature off. There are 2 photoelectric sensors: one in the front of the mirror and one mounted on the glass side of the mirror. If the sensors are blocked, the auto-dimming feature may not work correctly. Always verify both sensors are not physically blocked before attempting to diagnose interior auto-dimming mirror concerns.
