Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The SJB controls all of the interior lighting functions. The interior lighting system consists of the following components
- SJB
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- Interior lamps
- Vanity mirror lamps
- Door ajar switches (integrated into the door latch)
- Liftgate ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate latch)
- Liftgate glass ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate glass latch)
- Ambient lighting switch (if equipped)
- Ambient lighting module (if equipped) (mounted under the bottom of the floor console finish panel storage tray)
The interior lighting system may consist of up to 3 subsystems
- Courtesy lamps
- Demand lamps
- Ambient lighting (if equipped)
Principles of Operation
Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The SJB supplies voltage to the interior lighting system. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is not in the DOME DEFEAT position and a vehicle door is ajar with the vehicle speed less than 15 km/h (9 mph), or the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME LAMP position, the SJB provides voltage to the courtesy lamp circuit. The SJB controls all interior lighting functions and timing by monitoring inputs from the door ajar switches, liftgate and liftgate ajar switches, the instrument panel dimmer switch and vehicle speed.
Normal Operation
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the door ajar switches through circuits CPL26 (GN/VT) (LH front door), CPL31 (WH) (RH front door), CPL36 (GN) (LH rear door) and CPL39 (YE) (RH rear door). Ground is provided to the door ajar switches through circuit GD182 (BK/GY). The door ajar switch is closed with the door closed. When the door is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open door to the SJB.
The SJB also sends a voltage signal to the instrument panel dimmer switch through circuit CLN27 (WH/BN) to monitor the dome defeat input request. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position, the signal is routed to ground indicating a request for the dome defeat feature.
When any door is opened, a correct unlock code from the keyless entry keypad or an unlock request from a programmed Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is detected, the SJB provides voltage to the courtesy lamps unless the dome defeat from the instrument panel dimmer switch is detected.
- DTC B213A (Digital Dimmer Switch Input Circuit Failure) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that may set when the SJB detects multiple input requests from the instrument panel dimmer switch.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Door ajar switch (integrated into the door latch)
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the liftgate ajar switch through circuit CPL58 (GY/OG). The voltage signal passes through the liftgate ajar switch to the liftgate glass ajar switch through circuit CPL44 (YE/OG). The signal is then routed to ground through circuit GD182 (BK/GY).
The liftgate and the liftgate glass ajar switches are wired in series and are monitored from a single circuit by the SJB. The liftgate and liftgate glass ajar switches are closed when the liftgate and liftgate glass are closed. When the liftgate or liftgate glass is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open liftgate or liftgate glass (the SJB cannot determine which is open).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Liftgate ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate latch)
- Liftgate glass ajar switch (integrated into the liftgate glass latch)
- SJB
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) monitors the instrument panel dimmer switch status from circuit CLN17 (BN) to determine if the courtesy lamps are requested. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position, ground is supplied to circuit CLN17 (BN). When the request is detected, the SJB supplies voltage to the courtesy lamps.

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the instrument panel dimmer switch through circuit CLN27 (WH/BN) to monitor the dome defeat input request. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is in the DOME DEFEAT position, the signal is routed to ground indicating a request for the dome defeat feature.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB
Power is supplied to the interior courtesy lamps and cargo lamp through the Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 9 (15A). Based on the input status, the SJB supplies voltage to the interior courtesy lamps through circuit VLN33 (GY/VT). Ground for the courtesy lamps is supplied through circuit GD182 (BK/GY).
- DTC B2A35 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects an open from the courtesy lighting output circuit.
- DTC B2A36 (Interior Lighting Output Circuit Short to Ground) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when the SJB detects a short to ground from the courtesy lighting output circuit.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Interior lamp
- SJB
Normal Operation - Door Ajar Input
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the door ajar switches through circuits CPL26 (GN/VT) (LH front door), CPL31 (WH) (RH front door), CPL36 (GN) (LH rear door) and CPL39 (YE) (RH rear door). Ground is provided to the door ajar switches through circuit GD182 (BK/GY). The door ajar switch is closed with the door closed. When the door is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open door to the SJB.
Normal Operation - Liftgate/Liftgate Glass Ajar Input
The SJB sends a voltage signal to the liftgate ajar switch through circuit CPL58 (GY/OG). The voltage signal passes through the liftgate ajar switch to the liftgate glass ajar switch through circuit CPL44 (YE/OG). The signal is then routed to ground through circuit GD182 (BK/GY).
The liftgate and the liftgate glass ajar switches are wired in series and are monitored from a single circuit by the SJB. The liftgate and liftgate glass ajar switches are closed when the liftgate and liftgate glass are closed. When the liftgate or liftgate glass is opened, the signal to ground is interrupted indicating an open liftgate or liftgate glass (the SJB cannot determine which is open).
Normal Operation - Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch Input
The SJB monitors the instrument panel dimmer switch status from circuit CLN17 (BN) to determine if the courtesy lamps are requested. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is rotated to the DOME LAMP position, ground is supplied to circuit CLN17 (BN).
The SJB supplies voltage to the interior courtesy lamps through circuit VLN33 (GY/VT) when any of the following conditions exist
- Any door, liftgate or liftgate glass is opened.
- The instrument panel dimmer switch is place in the DOME LAMP position.
- A correct unlock code from the keyless entry keypad or an unlock request from a programmed Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is detected.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) energizes the battery saver relay based on inputs from the ignition key position, the door ajar, liftgate ajar and liftgate glass ajar switches, the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, and the instrument panel dimmer switch. When the battery saver relay is energized, voltage is supplied to the demand lamps through circuit CLN09 (YE/GN). The demand lamps are provided ground through circuit GD182 (BK/GY).

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) controls the battery saver function. The battery saver function provides automatic shutoff of the interior lamps (courtesy lamps and demand lamps) after 10 minutes have elapsed in order to save battery power.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- SJB
When the ignition key is in the RUN or ACC position, the ambient lighting module supplies voltage and ground to the LEDs located in the floor console cup holders, storage tray, storage bin and the front and rear footwells. The ambient lighting switch is used to cycle through the 7 color combinations or to turn the ambient lighting feature off. There are 3 different color (red, blue and green) LEDs housed within each LED assembly.
When the ignition key is in the RUN or ACC position, the ambient lighting switch and the ambient lighting module receive voltage through circuit CBX07 (GN/RD). Ground for the ambient lighting module is provided through circuit GD908 (BK). When the ambient lighting switch is pressed, voltage is routed to the ambient lighting module through circuit CLN54 (BN/YE), indicating a request for the module to cycle the ambient lighting to the next setting.

- Ambient lighting harness
- Ambient lighting switch
- Ambient lighting module
