Inspection and Verification
| WARNING | Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. Make sure the anti-theft system is functioning correctly before carrying out a logical starting system diagnosis. Address anti-theft system concerns before continuing. Refer to ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) .
- Verify the customer concern.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-494572) . Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.
- Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply. - If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-494551) , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition is in RUN (ON). The air bag warning indicator prove-out (other indicators may NOT prove the ignition is in RUN) confirms the ignition is in RUN. If the ignition does not transition to RUN, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-494582) to diagnose no power in RUN. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-494551) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-494551) . If the network test passes, proceed with module self-test diagnostics.
- Carry out the self-test diagnostics for the BCM, Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped), Tire Pressure Monitor Module (TPM) (if equipped), and the PCM.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «DTC CHARTS»(ref-494580-S02371060072012081400000) .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-494580-S27592203102012081400000) .

- A1 CHECK THE BATTERY Check the battery condition and state of charge. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing in «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . Is the battery OK? Yes : GO to A2. No : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A2 CHECK FOR ANY MESSAGES IN THE MESSAGE CENTER Check the message center while holding the ignition key in the start position. Is STARTING SYSTEM FAULT displayed in the message center? Yes : REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)»(ref-494605) to diagnose the PATS concern. No : GO to A3.
- A3 RETRIEVE PCM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM - Self-Test. Were DTCs retrieved on-demand during self-test? Yes : REFER to «PCM DTC Chart»(ref-494580-S18435468162012081400000) in this service information. No : GO to A4.
- A4 CHECK THE IN GEAR-TRANSMISSION IS APPLYING A LOAD TO ENGINE (IN_GEAR) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. While observing the IN_GEAR PID, place the gear selector in PARK and then NEUTRAL. Does the PID read NO in both positions? Yes : GO to A5. No : REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6F50/6F55»(ref-494558) or «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F35»(ref-494559) to diagnose the TR sensor.
- A5 CHECK THE ENGINE CRANKING (ENG_CRANK) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, while holding the key in the START position, monitor the ENG_CRANK PID. Does the PID change from Inactive to Active? Yes : GO to A6. No : GO to A16 .
- A6 CHECK THE STARTER RELAY CONTROL OPERATION NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this service information. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Flex Probe Kit for the test light probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test light probe directly on any connector. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Starter Relay. Connect a 12-volt incandescent test light between starter relay socket pin 1, circuit CDC12 (YE) and socket pin 2, circuit CDC26 (GY/OG). While holding the key in the START position, observe the test light. Does the test light illuminate when the key is in the START position? Yes : GO to A7. No : GO to A14 .
- A7 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER RELAY Measure the voltage between BJB starter relay cavity 3, circuit SBB19 (BU/RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A8. No : VERIFY BJB fuse 19 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit SBB19 (BU/RD) for an open. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate SYSTEMS WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A8 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR OPERATION AT THE STARTER RELAY With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, connect one end of a fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 3, circuit SBB19 (BU/RD) and momentarily connect the other end of the fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 5, circuit CDC25 (BN/GN). Did the starter motor engage and the engine crank? Yes : INSTALL a new starter relay. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to A9.
- A9 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection at the engine. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A10. No : CLEAN or INSTALL new battery cables as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A10 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the starter motor case. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A11. No : CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and MAKE SURE the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A11 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR Measure the voltage between starter solenoid ("B" terminal) C197A-1, circuit SDC02 (RD) and ground. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A12. No : CLEAN or INSTALL new battery cables as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A12 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, connect one end of a fused jumper wire to starter solenoid ("B" terminal) C197A-1, circuit SDC02 (RD) and momentarily connect the other end of the fused jumper wire to starter solenoid ("S" terminal) C197B-1, circuit CDC25 (BN/GN). Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes : GO to A13. No : INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-494580-S31846491102012081400000) or «STARTER MOTOR - 3.5L, 3.7L»(ref-494580-S08736937802012081400000) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A13 CHECK FOR START INPUT AT THE STARTER Connect: Starter Relay. Disconnect: Starter Solenoid ("S" terminal) C197B. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, measure the voltage between the starter solenoid ("S" terminal) C197B-1, circuit CDC25 (BN/GN) and ground, while holding the key in the START position. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : CLEAN the starter solenoid ("S" terminal) and connector C197B-1. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR circuit CDC25 (BN/GN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A14 CHECK THE PCM START CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between PCM C1381B, harness side and ground as follows: PCM Connector-Pin Circuit C1381B-9 CDC12 (YE) C1381B-11 CDC26 (GY/OG) For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between PCM C175B, harness side and ground as follows: PCM Connector-Pin Circuit C175B-7 CDC12 (YE) C175B-37 CDC26 (GY/OG) Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A15. No : REPAIR the affected circuit for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

- A16 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE PCM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between PCM C1381B-17, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH) and ground, while holding the key in the START position. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between PCM C175B-16, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH) and ground, while holding the key in the START position. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A18 . No : GO to A17.
- A17 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Carry out the Ignition Switch component test. Refer to «OEM COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-490538) . Did the ignition switch pass the component test? Yes : REPAIR circuit CDC35 (BU/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation. No : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-494582) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A18 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-494600) . CLEAR all DTCs in all modules. TEST the system for normal operation. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

- B1 CHECK THE BATTERY Check the battery condition and state of charge. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing in «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . Is the battery OK? Yes : GO to B2. No : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- B2 CHECK FOR NO KEY DETECTED MESSAGE IN THE MESSAGE CENTER NOTE: There are certain areas inside the vehicle where the IA key may not be detected and the message center displays NO KEY DETECTED. If the IA key is in the far outside edges of the interior (like in a door map pocket or above a sun visor) it might not be detected. Move the IA key to a different location and try to start the vehicle again. Check the message displayed in the message center while pressing the start/stop switch. Is NO KEY DETECTED displayed? Yes : REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)»(ref-494605) to diagnose the NO KEY DETECTED concern. No : GO to B3.
- B3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) OPERATION Observe the IPC operation while pushing the start/stop switch. Do some indicators in the IPC illuminate? Yes : GO to B5 . No : GO to B4.
- B4 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCAN TOOL Carry out the network test using the scan tool. Does the RFA module and BCM pass the network test? Yes : REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-494582) to diagnose no power in RUN. No : REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-494551) to diagnose no communication with the RFA module, and BCM.
- B5 RETRIEVED DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM - Self-Test. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: RFA Module - Self-Test. Were DTCs retrieved on-demand during self-test? Yes : For RFA module DTCs, REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-494579) . For all BCM or PCM DTCs, REFER to «DTC CHARTS»(ref-494580-S02371060072012081400000) in this service information. No : GO to B6.
- B6 CHECK THE RFA MODULE CRANK FACTOR BRAKE (Crk_Fact_Brk) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - RFA Module. While observing the Crk_Fact_Brk PID, apply the brake pedal. Does the PID read YES when the brake was applied? Yes : GO to B9 . No : GO to B7.
- B7 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE LAMPS While observing the brake lamps, apply the brake pedal. Do the brake lamps illuminate? Yes : GO to B8. No : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-494583) to diagnose the brake lamps concern.
- B8 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE RFA MODULE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: RFA Module. Measure the voltage between RFA module C2153C-18, circuit CCB08 (VT/WH), harness side and ground while pressing the brake pedal. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B24 . No : REPAIR circuit CCB08 (VT/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B9 CHECK THE PCM IN GEAR-TRANSMISSION IS APPLYING A LOAD TO ENGINE (IN_GEAR) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. While observing the IN_GEAR PID, place the gear selector in PARK and then NEUTRAL. Does the PID read NO in both positions? Yes : GO to B10. No : REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6F50/6F55»(ref-494558) or «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F35»(ref-494559) to diagnose the TR sensor.
- B10 CHECK THE ENGINE CRANKING (ENG_CRANK) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, while pressing the start/ stop switch and the brake pedal, monitor the ENG_CRANK PID. Does the PID change from Inactive to Active? Yes : GO to B11. No : GO to B21 .
- B11 CHECK THE STARTER RELAY CONTROL OPERATION NOTE: The following step uses a test light to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only the test light recommended in the Special Tools table at the beginning of this service information. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B13. No : VERIFY BJB fuse 19 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit SBB19 (BU/RD) for an open. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate SYSTEMS WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B13 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR OPERATION AT THE STARTER RELAY With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, connect one end of a fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 3, circuit SBB19 (BU/RD) and momentarily connect the other end of the fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 5, circuit CDC25 (BN/GN). Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes : INSTALL a new starter relay. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to B14.
- B14 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection at the engine. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B15. No : CLEAN or INSTALL new battery cables as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-494597) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- B15 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the starter motor case. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B16. No : CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and MAKE SURE the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B16 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR Measure the voltage between starter solenoid ("B" terminal) C197A-1, circuit SDC02 (RD) and ground. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B17. Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes : GO to B18. No : INSTALL a new starter motor. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B18 CHECK FOR START INPUT AT THE STARTER Connect: Starter Relay. Disconnect: Starter Solenoid ("S" terminal) C197B. Start the engine. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, measure the voltage between the starter solenoid ("S" terminal) C197B-1, circuit CDC25 (BN/GN) and ground, while pressing the brake and the start/stop switch. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : CLEAN the starter solenoid ("S" terminal) and connector C197B-1. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR circuit CDC25 (BN/GN) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B19 CHECK THE PCM START CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). - B20 CHECK THE PCM START CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between PCM C1381B, harness side and the BJB starter relay cavity as follows: PCM Connector-Pin Circuit BJB C1381B-9 CDC12 (YE) BJB starter relay cavity 1 C1381B-11 CDC26 (GY/OG) BJB starter relay cavity 2 For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between PCM C175B, harness side and the BJB starter relay cavity as follows: PCM Connector-Pin Circuit BJB C175B-7 CDC12 (YE) BJB starter relay cavity 1 C175B-37 CDC26 (GY/OG) BJB starter relay cavity 2 Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to B23 . No : REPAIR the affected circuit for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B21 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE PCM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). Ignition ON. For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between PCM C1381B-17, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH) and ground, while pressing the brake and the start/stop switch. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between PCM C175B-16, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH) and ground, while pressing the brake and the start/stop switch. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to B23 . No : GO to B22.
- B22 CHECK THE BCM ENGINE START STOP BUTTON CIRCUIT 1 (START_STOP_1) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - BCM. Monitor the START_STOP_1 PID while pressing the start/stop switch. Does the PID read correctly? Yes : REPAIR circuits CDC35 (BU/WH)/CPK34 (BN/VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation. No : REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-494582) to diagnose the start/stop switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

Engage the starter and verify the noise is due to starter operation. Is the noise due to the starter engagement? Yes : GO to C3. - D3 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between the PCM C1381B-14, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and the BCM C2280F-5, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between the PCM C175B-35, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and the BCM C2280F-5, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side. For vehicles without IA, measure the resistance between the PATS transceiver C252-1, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and the BCM C2280F-5, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side. Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to D4. No : REPAIR circuit CE436 (VT/OG) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D4 CHECK THE BCM AND PCM FOR CORRECT OPERATION Connect: BCM C2280F. Ignition ON. For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between the PCM C1381B-14, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between the PCM C175B-35, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. For vehicles without IA, measure the voltage between PATS transceiver C252-1, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to D8 . No : VERIFY BCM fuse 18 (10A) is OK. If OK, GO to D9 . If not OK, REFER to the appropriate SYSTEMS WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D5 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC FOR A FAULT STATUS CHANGE (SHORT TO GROUND INDICATED) Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Clear BCM Continuous DTCs. Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PATS Transceiver C252 (for vehicles without IA only). Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Was DTC C113A:11 retrieved on-demand during self-test? Yes : GO to D6. No : GO to D7 .
- D6 CHECK THE WAKE UP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Disconnect: BCM C2280F. For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between the PCM C1381B-14, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the resistance between the PCM C175B-35, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to D9 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D7 CHECK THE BCM FOR DTCs Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Clear BCM Continuous DTCs. Ignition OFF. Connect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). Ignition ON. - D8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. - E1 CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA CONNECTION Check the connections at the external antenna and TPM. Are the connections loose or disconnected? Yes : REPAIR as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to E2.
- E2 CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA Install a new external antenna. Attempt to start the vehicle using the IKT or IA key from a distance of 100 meters (328 feet) from the vehicle. Does the vehicle start from this distance? Yes : Fault is corrected. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to E3.
- E3 CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA CABLE Install a new external antenna cable. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test. Attempt to start the vehicle using the IKT or IA key from a distance of 100 meters (328 feet) from the vehicle. Does the vehicle start from this distance? Yes : Fault is corrected. TEST the system for normal operation. No : INSTALL a new TPM. REFER to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-494563) . TEST the system for normal operation.
PINPOINT TEST F: THE REMOTE START IS INOPERATIVE
- F1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE IKT OR IA KEY Press all buttons on the IKT or IA key and check for the correct operation. Is the remote start the only function that is inoperative? Yes : GO to F2. No : REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(ref-494609) to diagnose and repair the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system. TEST the system for normal operation.
- F2 CHECK THE ENGINE FOR CRANKING With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, attempt to crank the engine using the key in the ignition or pressing the start/stop switch and the brake pedal. Did the engine crank? Yes : GO to F3. No : This not a remote start issue. To diagnose the no crank condition for vehicles without IA, GO to «PINPOINT TEST A»(ref-494580-S35567288202012081400000) . - F3 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATED ENGINE WARNING LAMPS With the engine running, check the instrument cluster for illuminated warning lamps. Are any engine warning lamps illuminated? Yes : CARRY OUT self-test of the PCM. DIAGNOSE and REPAIR any DTCs present. REFER to «PCM DTC Chart»(ref-494580-S18435468162012081400000) in this service information. No : GO to F4.
- F4 RETRIEVE BCM AND TPM DTCs Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: BCM - Self-Test. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: TPM - Self-Test. Are any DTCs present? Yes : REFER to «DTC CHARTS»(ref-494580-S02371060072012081400000) in this service information. No : GO to F5.
- F5 CONFIRM THE REMOTE START FUNCTION IS ENABLED Ignition ON. Check the message center and confirm the remote start function is enabled. Refer to the Owner's Literature or «INFORMATION CENTER - INSTRUMENTATION, MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES»(ref-494581) . Is the remote start function enabled? Yes : GO to F6. No : ENABLE the remote start function. TEST the system for normal operation.
- F6 CHECK THE BCM LAST RECEIVED RKE TRANSMITTER BUTTON PRESS (LST_RKE_xMTR) OR RFA MODULE LAST RECEIVED TRANSMITTER ID BUTTON PRESS (LST_XM_B_PRS) TRANSMITTER PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - BCM (without IA) or RFA Module (with IA). Press the remote start button on the IKT or IA key and note the PID status: Without IA , BCM PID LST_RKE_xMTR. With IA , RFA module PID LST_XM_B_Prs. Does the selected PID indicate the remote start button was the last button pressed? Yes : GO to F7. No : REPLACE and PROGRAM new IKT or IA key. REFER to «ANTI-THEFT - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)»(ref-494605) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- F7 CHECK THE PCM WAKE UP CIRCUIT Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1381B (2.0L) or C175B (3.5L and 3.7L). Ignition ON. For 2.0L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between the PCM C1381B-14, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. For 3.5L and 3.7L equipped vehicles , measure the voltage between the PCM C175B-35, circuit CE436 (VT/OG), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to F8. No : VERIFY BCM fuse 18 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit CE436 (VT/OG) for an open. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate SYSTEMS WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
- F8 CHECK THE REMOTE START PRECONDITIONS FOR CORRECT OPERATION NOTE: The Body Control Module (BCM) acknowledges the remote start request and that all preconditions have been met by providing 2 short flashes of the turn indicators and a system complete chirp. Check the vehicle for the following: Hood is closed with no DTC present. Ignition must be off Vehicle must be in PARK. Remote start feature is configured ON. Remote start events does not exceed allowed time. (2 events in a 1 hour duration). Have all preconditions for remote start been met and is the remote start system still inoperative? Yes : GO to F9. No : CARRY OUT the required precondition as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
- F9 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect all the PCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-494600) . Starter Motor - Ground Circuit Test
A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows

- Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
- If the voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery, the body ground connections and the starter ground connection. Retest.
- If the voltage drop is greater than 0.5 volt, install a new cable. If the voltage reading is less than 0.5 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor.
