TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI)

The fuel charging and controls system consists of

  1. fuel injectors.
  2. a Fuel Pump (FP) control module (located on the LH side of the frame near the spare tire).
  3. a fuel rail and fuel pressure relief valve.
  4. a Throttle Body (TB).
  5. a TB spacer.

The fuel charging and controls system is

  1. a SFI system.
  2. Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM).
  3. Mass Air Flow (MAF) controlled.

Fuel is metered into each intake port in a sequential firing order. Fuel injectors pulse to follow engine firing order, in accordance with engine demand, on a tuned intake manifold.

The basic fuel requirement of the engine is determined from the data supplied to the PCM by the MAF sensor, which measures the amount of air being drawn into the engine.

The various sensors detect any changes in the operating conditions and send signals to the PCM. This permits the PCM to control the opening duration (pulse width) of the fuel injectors and maintain optimum exhaust emission control and engine performance for all operating conditions.

Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors

  1. are electronically operated by the PCM.
  2. atomize the fuel as the fuel is delivered.
  3. each have an internal solenoid that opens a needle valve, which injects fuel into the intake port in the cylinder head.
  4. are deposit resistant.

Fuel Pressure Relief Valve

The fuel pressure relief valve is located on the fuel rail and is used to relieve fuel pressure from the fuel system and for diagnostic testing.

Fuel Pump (FP) Control Module

The FP control module

  1. receives signals from the PCM.
  2. controls the duty cycle of the FP.

Fuel Rail

Note. The fuel injectors and the fuel rail must be handled with extreme care to prevent damage to sealing areas and sensitive fuel-metering orifices.

The fuel rail

  1. receives fuel from the fuel supply tube.
  2. delivers fuel to the fuel injectors.

Throttle Body (TB)

The TB

  1. controls air supply to the intake manifold by electronically positioning the throttle plate.
  2. is not adjustable.

Throttle Body (TB) Spacer

The TB spacer

  1. increases intake manifold plenum volume.
  2. is designed to enhance low to mid-range power and torque while improving throttle response and fuel economy.

Removal

  1. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) assembly and the ACL outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-intake-air-filtering-system) .
  3. Disconnect the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the 4 bolts and the TB assembly. Discard the TB O-ring seal.

Installation

  1. Using a new O-ring seal, install the TB and tighten the 4 bolts in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (one-fourth turn).
  2. Connect the TP sensor electrical connector.
  3. Connect the ETC electrical connector.
  4. Install the ACL assembly and the ACL outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-intake-air-filtering-system) .

  2. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose quick connect coupling from the TB spacer. For additional information on the quick connect coupling, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) .
  3. Disconnect the PCV tube from the TB spacer heater element.
  4. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the TB spacer.
  5. Remove the 2 PCV heater element screws.
  6. Remove the PCV heater element.
  7. Inspect the O-ring seal and discard if damaged.
  8. Remove the 3 bolts, the stud bolt and the TB spacer. Remove and discard the TB spacer gasket.
  1. Install a new TB spacer gasket. Install the TB spacer and the 4 fasteners. Tighten the studbolt and the 3 bolts in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  2. Install the PCV heater element. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  3. Install the 2 PCV heater element screws.
  4. Connect the vacuum hose to the TB spacer.
  5. Connect the PCV tube to the TB spacer heater element.
  6. Connect the vacuum hose and the EVAP hose quick connect coupling to the TB spacer. For additional information on the quick connect coupling, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) .

WARNINGBefore working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Note. Fuel injection equipment is manufactured to very precise tolerances and fine clearances. It is therefore essential that absolute cleanliness is observed when working with these components. Always install plugs to any open orifices or tubes. Failure to follow these instructions may result in fuel injection component damage.

Note. When reusing liquid or vapor tube connectors, make sure to use compressed air to remove any foreign material from the connector retaining clip area before separating from the tube. Failure to follow these instructions may result in fuel or vapor leaks and connector damage.

  2. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) .
  3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and the ACL outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-intake-air-filtering-system) .
  4. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) .
  5. Disconnect the fuel tube quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) .
  6. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness retainers from the engine wiring harness. Position the transmission wiring harness aside.
  7. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector and the wiring harness retainer.
  8. Disconnect the 10 fuel injector electrical connectors.
  9. Disconnect the 10 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  10. Disconnect the quick connect couplings and remove the PCV tube.
  11. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainer from the rear of the intake manifold.
  12. Disconnect the 2 RH engine wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness away from the fuel rail.
  13. Disconnect the 3 LH engine wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness away from the fuel rail.
  14. Remove the 4 bolts, separate the fuel rail from the 10 fuel injectors and remove the fuel rail.
  15. Remove the fuel injectors from the intake manifold and discard the upper and lower fuel injector O-ring seals.
  1. Install 20 new upper and lower O-ring seals onto the 10 fuel injectors.
  2. Install the 10 fuel injectors into the intake manifold.
  3. Position the fuel rail onto the fuel injectors and install the 4 bolts. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  4. Position the engine wiring harness and connect the 3 LH engine wiring harness retainers.
  5. Position the engine wiring harness and connect the 2 RH engine wiring harness retainers.
  6. Connect the engine wiring harness retainer to the rear of the intake manifold.
  7. Position the PCV tube and connect the quick connect couplings. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) .
  8. Connect the 10 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  9. Connect the 10 fuel injector electrical connectors.
  10. Connect the TP sensor electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
  11. Position the transmission wiring harness and connect harness retainers to the engine wiring harness.

  13. Install the ACL and the ACL outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(/ford/econoline-e250/2012-2013/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-intake-air-filtering-system) .

Removal and Installation

  1. Disconnect the FP control module electrical connector.
  2. Remove the 2 bolts and the FP control module. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
