QT1 CARRY OUT A VISUAL INSPECTION

Note. Visually inspect the vehicle for aftermarket accessories and performance modifications (air filter, exhaust system, intake system, performance chip, and turbocharger). Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) SYSTEM , MODIFICATIONS TO OBD VEHICLES .

  1. Access any related OASIS or TSB information.
  2. Inspect the air cleaner, inlet ducting, tubes and clamps.
  3. Inspect all hoses for damage, leaks, cracks, blockage, and proper routing.
  4. Inspect the fuel system including the fuel tank and the fuel lines for kinks, bends and/or leakage.
  5. Inspect the wiring harness for correct routing and chafing.
  6. Inspect the exhaust system.
  7. Check for the correct engine oil level and quality.
  8. Check the engine coolant for proper level.

Is any concern present?

REPAIR as necessary.GO to QT2 .

QT2 VEHICLE PREPARATION

  1. Place the transmission gear selector into PARK.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Block the drive wheels.
  4. Turn off all electrical loads (radios, lights, A/C, blower, and fans).

QT3 CARRY OUT THE PCM QUICK TEST

Note. If unable to access the PCM or a scan tool communication concern exists, GO to PINPOINT TEST AE .

  1. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC). Refer to «SCAN TOOL SETUP AND FUNCTIONALITY»(/ford/cutaway-e350-super-duty/2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-diagnostic-methods-e-350-60l-diesel-models__scan-tool-setup-and-functionality) .
  2. Carry out the PCM Quick Test to access and record any key ON engine OFF (KOEO), key ON engine running (KOER) and continuous memory DTCs. Refer to «QUICK TEST DESCRIPTION»(/ford/cutaway-e350-super-duty/2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-diagnostic-methods-e-350-60l-diesel-models__quick-test-description) .
  3. Access and record the Freeze Frame Data. Refer to «FREEZE FRAME DATA»(/ford/cutaway-e350-super-duty/2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-diagnostic-methods-e-350-60l-diesel-models) .

  1. Engine for correct oil level/quality.
  2. Electrical connections.
  3. Automatic transmission - torque converter operation, always applied.
  4. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level.
  5. Engine overheating.

Note. Heavy external load upon cold start may cause a momentary lack of power.

Carry out the following preliminary checks

  1. Accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor electrical connection failure.
  2. Interference from floor mats.
  3. Accelerator pedal damage.

  1. Unique Idle Concern: Slow Return to Idle, Fast Idle

Carry out the following preliminary checks

  1. PCM system check.
  2. Accelerator pedal for binding, broken return spring, stuck condition (floor mats).
  3. External fuel source.
  4. Engine not reaching normal operating temperature.
  5. Power take-off (PTO), auxiliary idle control, and charge protect devices disengaged.

Carry out the following preliminary checks

  1. Check for correct engine oil level.
  2. Confirm oil change within 12,070 km (7,500 miles).
  3. Check air intake system: Air filter restriction gauge, inlet for obstruction/restrictions. RESET the air filter restriction gauge.
  4. Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
  5. Check fuel quality. REFER to «PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES»(/ford/cutaway-e350-super-duty/2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-powertrain-dtc-charts-descriptions-e-350-60l-diesel-models__performance-diagnostic-procedures) .

Note. The 6.0 diesel engine may exhibit a lack of power concern, without a DTCs, due to the powertrain control module (PCM) derate strategies designed for engine temperature protection. Vehicles will display a high temperature gauge reading when high engine oil temperature (EOT) conditions are encountered.

Carry out the following preliminary checks

  1. Confirm brakes are not dragging.
  2. Check for oil in coolant.
  3. Check the engine coolant level and quality.
  4. Check for engine overheating conditions.
  5. Check for the correct engine oil level.
  6. Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
  7. Confirm oil change within 12,070 km (7,500 miles).
  8. Check air intake system: check for intake restriction. Air filter restriction gauge/air filter.
  9. Check the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor hose for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
  10. Check the exhaust pressure (EP) sensor and tube for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
  11. Check the intake system for leaks.
  12. Check for low boost pressure.
  13. Check for over boost condition.
  14. Check for sufficient clean fuel.
  15. Compare loaded weight of vehicle with performance expectations.
  16. Power monitor active.

Carry Out The KOEO On-Demand Self-TestGO to the appropriate pinpoint test if a concern is indicated.
Powetrain Control Module (PCM)GO to PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) . Select PIDS: ECT, and EOT. REFER to REFERENCE VALUES for correct values. For the ECT, derate will occur when temperature exceeds 113C (235F). For the EOT, derate will occur when temperature exceeds 127C (260F).
Check Vane SweepGO to POWERTRAIN CONTROL SOFTWARE for a description of the vane sweep operation. Monitor the VGTDC PID during concern.
Carry Out The KOEO Injector Electrical Self Test 6a And Power Balance Test 6b.GO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES .
Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCsGO to the appropriate pinpoint test if a concern is indicated.

Carry out a slow neutral engine RPM run up in Park or neutral gear.For symptom occurring between 1,200 RPM and 2,300 RPM, GO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Power Balance Test. For symptom occurring between 3,000 RPM and 4,000 RPM, GO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . Carry out the Low Idle Stability (ICP Pressure). If ICP sensor and connector are OK, CARRY OUT the Injection Pressure Regulator Test.
Check For Exhaust RestrictionMEASURE the EP. If the EP is greater than 234 kPa (34 psi) or 2 volts, LOCATE and REPAIR the restriction in the exhaust system. VERIFY the repair.

Note. The engine coolant temperature gauge normally indicates the temperature of the engine coolant. The temperature gauge will transition into the red zone (HOT) area of the gauge, if the engine coolant temperature (ECT) exceeds 120C (248F) or if the engine oil temperature (EOT) exceeds 127C (260F).

Preliminary ChecksCARRY OUT preliminary checks. GO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT steps 1-4. VERIFY any concerns.
Atmospheric Pressure Rationality CheckGO to PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) . With KOEO, SELECT Parameter Identification (PID). SELECT PIDs: EP, MAP and BARO. If any PID values/readings deviate from atmospheric pressure in your locale by more than 10 kPa (1.5 psi), GO to the appropriate pinpoint test for the sensor with the largest difference.
Check Color Of Exhaust SmokeNOTE: Some white tailpipe exhaust smoke is a normal condition at start-up with temperatures below 10°C (50°F) or with an extended idle in a cool climate. START the engine. If the exhaust smoke is white, GO to the next step. If the exhaust smoke is black, CHECK for charge air cooler restrictions.
Check White Tailpipe Exhaust SmokeGO to HARD START/NO START DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Glow Plug System Operation Test.
Check Charge Air Cooler (CAC) for RestrictionsCHECK for any conditions that may restrict air flow through the charge air cooler. DISCONNECT the ducts at the CAC and CHECK for restrictions. CHECK inside of the CAC for restrictions. If there are any restrictions, CLEAN as necessary. VERIFY the repair.
Confirm Fuel QualityIf the concern is present, DRAIN the fuel tank. ADD known high quality diesel fuel to tank. If the amount of smoke is decreased, ADVISE the operator of need for a higher quality fuel.
Check For Out-of-Range SensorNOTE: Make sure the vehicle temperature is stabilized. SOAK the vehicle at ambient temperature for at least 8 hours. Verify no accessories are in use (engine block or oil heaters). CHECK the operation of: intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, manifold air temperature (MAT) sensor, engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor and engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. If the sensor temperature readings are not within 12 degrees, REFER to the applicable pinpoint test in PINPOINT TESTS -- E-350 6.0L DIESEL .
Check For Coolant LeakREFER to the appropriate Engine Cooling article to diagnose the loss of coolant.
Check Thermostat OperationREFER to the appropriate Engine Cooling article to diagnose the thermostat.
Isolate Engine Cylinders Generating SmokeREMOVE the exhaust manifold attaching bolts. PRY the manifolds away from the cylinder head. START the engine. If a cylinder is generating excessive smoke, CHECK the compression. If not, TEST the glow plug(s).
Check Crankcase PressureGO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Crankcase Pressure Test.
Test Glow PlugREMOVE the glow plug from the smoking cylinder. GROUND the body of the glow plug and INSTALL a jumper wire from the B+ source to the glow plug terminal. If the glow plug tip does NOT become hot, INSTALL a new glow plug. VERIFY the repair.
Switch Fuel InjectorsSWITCH injector(s) between a smoking and non-smoking cylinder(s). If the smoke moves with the injector(s), INSTALL new injector(s). VERIFY the repair.
Black SmokeCheck for air in the fuel. Test with a clear line at the pump inlet. REFER to the appropriate Fuel Tank and Lines article for removing fuel lines.
Check The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) SystemGO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Test.
NOTE
Some white tailpipe exhaust smoke is a normal condition at start-up with temperatures below 10°C (50°F) or with an extended idle in a cool climate.

  1. Oil System Concerns: High Oil Consumption, Leaks

Carry out the following preliminary checks

  1. External leaks (rocker cover gasket, crankshaft seals).
  2. Correct oil viscosity and API rating. Refer to the Owner's Literature, Maintenance and Specifications for the engine oil specifications.
  3. Check air intake system: Air filter restriction gauge.
  4. Loads do not exceed maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

Verify High Oil ConsumptionCONFIRM the oil consumption through maintenance records or other documentation. If records are not available, have the customer log oil consumption for 1,450 km (900 miles). If the oil consumption rate is NOT greater than 0.95 liter (1 quart) per 1,450 km (900 miles), no problem exists. RETURN the vehicle to the customer.
Check Base EngineGO to PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES . CARRY OUT the Crankcase Pressure Test.
Isolate TurbochargerREMOVE the air duct at the turbocharger compressor housing outlet. REPEAT the crankcase pressure test. If the crankcase pressure decreases, INSTALL a new turbocharger. VERIFY the repair. If not, CHECK the turbocharger for an oil leak. REFER to the appropriate, Fuel Charging and Controls - Turbocharger and CARRY OUT the Turbocharger Internal Oil Leak Test to continue diagnosis.
