VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Note. The adjusting shims in the valve tappets can be changed to correct the valve clearance. Adjustment shims are available in 52 different thicknesses. The shim thickness is stamped on the back of the shim in hundredths of a millimeter. Because of space limitations the camshafts have to be removed before the adjusting shims can be replaced. This means that a high degree of accuracy is required during adjusting to avoid repeated removal and installation of the camshafts.
- Remove the valve cover. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front tire and wheel. Turn engine by hand in direction of normal rotation until No. 1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
- Using an open-end wrench, gently turn the exhaust camshaft by the hexagon (located on exhaust camshaft near camshaft lobe for No. 1 exhaust valve) in the normal direction of rotation until the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) unit reaches its stop. Measure and record clearance of valves at base circle for No. 1 cylinder. Rotate the engine by the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation through another 180 degrees. Repeat procedure for remaining valves. The sequence for checking valve clearance is by the firing order: 1-3-4-2
- If valve adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-2519-S15065037032000032000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove the valve tappets. (Scheme 76) Inspect the valve tappets. Lubricate the valve tappets with Engine Assembly Lubricant (D9AZ-10579-D) or equivalent and install the valve tappets.
- Remove valve shims. Shims are marked for thickness. Select new shims and mark installation location. For valve clearance specifications, see «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-2519-S12541607962003011300000) table. Desired clearance is.15 mm (.006") for intake valves, and.30 mm (.012") for exhaust valves. Select shim as follows: Shim thickness = measured clearance, plus base shim thickness, minus desired thickness. Replace shims.
- Install the exhaust camshaft and the oil feed flange. (Scheme 74)and (Scheme 75). Install the bearing caps.
- Tighten the bearing caps in the sequence (Scheme 77)
- Install the intake camshaft. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-2519-S15065037032000032000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure new valve clearances and ensure they are within specification.
