TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable at driver's side strut tower. Remove air cleaner duct. Remove Transmission Control Module (TCM) and wiring. TCM is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment. (Scheme 92)
  2. Remove solenoid pack electrical connector from transaxle. Solenoid pack electrical connector is located on side of transaxle, near dipstick tube. Remove dipstick and dipstick tube. Disconnect oil cooler lines and shift cable from transaxle.
  3. Support engine with hoist. Remove vertical bolts from driver's side transaxle mount-to-mount bracket on transaxle. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See the AXLE SHAFT - FRONT article. CAUTION: Exhaust pipe with catalytic converter must be disconnected from exhaust manifold before lowering engine to prevent damage to exhaust manifold and exhaust system.
  4. Remove necessary splash shields for access to transaxle. Remove bolts/nuts and disconnect exhaust pipe with catalytic converter from exhaust manifold.
  5. Remove remaining driver's side mount bracket bolts from end of transaxle. Remove engine oil filter and starter. Remove front (radiator side) engine mount. Remove through-bolt from rear (firewall side) engine mount bracket.
  6. Remove crossmember bolts. Remove rear (firewall side) engine mount bracket. Remove lower radiator crossmember. Remove strut brackets. On 2.4L models, an oil pan support collar is bolted along rear of oil pan and to front of transaxle. Remove bolts and oil pan support collar.
  7. On all models, remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on torque converter and flexplate for reassembly reference. Remove torque converter bolts.
  8. On 2.5L models, remove retaining bolt from Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. CKP sensor is located on transaxle housing, just below distributor. (Scheme 93) Remove CKP sensor.
  9. On all models, remove necessary transaxle wiring. Loosen bolts on passenger's side of steering gear and suspension crossmember bolts. Remove bolts from driver's side of steering gear and suspension crossmember bolts. Remove stabilizer bar mount bolts from each side of stabilizer bar.
  10. Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Move suspension crossmember rearward and lower transaxle assembly from vehicle.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolt/nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-124596-S20519897302001100200000) . Ensure reference marks on torque converter and flexplate are aligned. CAUTION: On 2.4L models, proper tightening procedure must be followed when installing oil pan support collar or oil pan and/or oil pan support collar may be damaged.
  2. On 2.4L models, when installing oil pan support collar, install 2 center oil pan support collar-to-oil pan bolts and tighten to 30 INCH lbs. (3.4 N.m). Install oil pan-support collar-to-transaxle bolts and tighten to 80 ft. lbs. (109 N.m). Install 2 remaining oil pan support collar-to-oil pan bolts. Starting at center and working outward, tighten all 4 oil pan support collar-to-oil pan bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m). CAUTION: On 2.5L models, ensure NEW paper spacer is installed on flexplate end of CKP sensor before installing.
  3. On 2.5L models, when installing CKP sensor, clean old paper spacer from flexplate end of CKP sensor. Install NEW spacer on flexplate end of CKP sensor. Install CKP sensor. Push downward on CKP sensor until it contacts flexplate. While holding CKP sensor downward, install and tighten retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-124596-S20519897302001100200000) . On all models, fill transaxle with MOPAR ATF Plus 3, Type 7176 fluid.
