TEST 38: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) CONTROL CIRCUIT

Note. Perform PRE-DIAGNOSTIC CHECKOUT before proceeding with this test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  1. Connect a 0-300 psi (21 kg/cm 2 ) pressure gauge to TCC OFF pressure test port. See TESTING in AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 41TE/AE & F4AC1 article. Using scan tool, read, record then erase DTCs following scan tool manufacturer's instructions. Test drive vehicle in overdrive until transmission reaches normal operating temperature.
  2. With vehicle speed greater than 50 MPH, release throttle, then tip-in to about 1/4 throttle and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat this procedure 3 times while observing scan tool and pressure gauge. If scan tool displays a PEMCC-to-FEMCC transition during throttle tip-in for any of the 3 attempts, conditions required to set DTC 38 are not present at this time. If operation is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. If pressure gauge reading was less than 10 psi (.7 kg/cm 2 ) during procedure in step 2), inspect and repair oil pump bushing as necessary. ALWAYS replace torque converter if DTC 38 is set without DTC 24. Thoroughly clean transmission and oil cooler. If pressure gauge reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. If DTC 24 was present prior to erasing DTCs, replace transmission solenoid pack. If DTC 24 was not present, go to next step.
  5. While test driving vehicle, come to a stop and shift to Neutral. Using scan tool, monitor L-R pressure switch state. If scan tool displays L-R pressure switch state as CLOSED, replace valve body. If scan tool does not display CLOSED, replace transmission solenoid pack.

TEST 48: TORQUE MANAGEMENT REQUEST SIGNAL

Note. Perform PRE-DIAGNOSTIC CHECKOUT before proceeding with this test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and torque management request sense circuit at TCM harness connector. If voltage is 7-10 volts, replace TCM. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and torque management request sense circuit at TCM harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair torque management request sense circuit for a short to ground. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector. Measure resistance of torque management request sense circuit between TCM and PCM harness connectors. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in torque management request sense circuit.
