MODEL IDENTIFICATION

Note. For scheduled maintenance intervals and the related fluid capacities, fluid specifications and labor times for major service intervals, see SCHEDULED SERVICES article in this section. Warranty information and specifications for fluid capacities, lubrication specifications, wheel and tire size, and battery type are covered in this article.

VIN LOCATION

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on the left side of the dash panel at the base of the windshield. The VIN chart explains the code characters.

SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS

Note. Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under ANY (one or more) of these conditions

Service is recommended at mileage intervals based on vehicle operation. Normal Service and Severe Service are based on the following primary operating conditions

Severe Service

1. Sustained High Speed Driving In Hot Weather
2. Stop-And-Go Driving In Dusty Conditions
3. Extensive Idling
4. Frequent Short Trips
5. Trailer Towing Or Commercial Use
6. Driving Off-Road Or In Salty Or Sandy Areas

Normal Service

1. Driven More Than 10 Miles Daily
2. No Severe Service Operating Conditions

CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT

Replace camshaft timing belt at 90,000 mile intervals. Inspect timing belt on 3.0L engine at 60,000 miles and replace if necessary.

The condition of camshaft drive belts should always be checked on vehicles which have more than 50,000 miles. Although some manufacturers do not recommend belt replacement at a specified mileage, others require it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact. These designs are often called "Free Wheeling".

Many manufacturers changed their maintenance and warranty schedules in the mid-1980's to reflect timing belt inspection and/or replacement at 50,000-60,000 miles. Most service interval schedules in this manual reflect these changes.

Belts or components should be inspected and replaced if any of the following conditions exist

1. Cracks Or Tears In Belt Surface
2. Missing, Damaged, Cracked Or Rounded Teeth
3. Oil Contamination
4. Damaged Or Faulty Tensioners
5. Incorrect Tension Adjustment

SERVICE LABOR TIMES

Note. For 1990 and newer vehicles, labor times are provided, where available, within appropriate SERVICE INTERVAL table in SCHEDULED SERVICES article.

TIRE INFLATION

Tire pressure specification decal is attached to the rear face of the driver's door. Inflation pressures listed on decal are always cold inflation pressure. The cold inflation pressure must never exceed the maximum values molded into the tire side wall.

Note. Cold inflation pressure is defined as the tire pressure after the vehicle has set for at least 3 hours without being driven or vehicle has been driven less than a mile after being parked for a 3-hour period.

WHEEL TIGHTENING

Tighten all wheel lug nuts to 95 ft. lbs. (129 N.m). Always tighten wheel lug nuts in a crisscross pattern. All wheel lug nuts have right-hand threads.

Vehicles are delivered with maintenance-free battery. Water need never be added to a maintenance-free battery. The battery contains a visual test. A Green indicator is seen when an adequate charge level exists, a Black indicator means that charging is required and a Yellow indicator appears when replacement is necessary.

AIR BAG SYSTEM

The fuse access panel located in the left, lower instrument panel must be in place for proper knee impact protection in the event of a collision.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM

The anti-lock brake system contains electronic equipment that can be susceptible to interference caused by improperly installed or high output radio transmitting equipment. Since this interference could cause the possible loss of the anti-lock braking capability, such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.

On models equipped with anti-lock brake systems, ALWAYS observe the following cautions

1. DO NOT attempt to bleed hydraulic system without first referring to the appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES Section.
2. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM - BENDIX-6 - 1993
3. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM - 1994
4. DO NOT mix tire sizes. As long as tires remain close to the original diameter, increasing the width is acceptable. Rolling diameter must be identical for all 4 tires. Some manufacturers recommend tires of the same brand, style and type. Failure to follow this precaution may cause inaccurate wheel speed readings.
5. Use ONLY recommended brake fluids. DO NOT use silicone brake fluids in an ABS-equipped vehicle.

If battery shows any signs of freezing, leaking, loose posts or low electrolyte level, DO NOT TEST. An explosive condition could result.

REPLACING BLOWN FUSES

Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous electrical system overload.

BRAKE HOSE INSPECTION

If front wheel, rear axle, or anti-lock unit brake hose outer cover is cracked, chafed, or bulged, replace hose immediately. Brake failure could result.

BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR

Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning that brake pads need replacement.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Continued operation of vehicle with a severe malfunction could cause converter to overheat, resulting in possible damage to converter and vehicle.

Any modification to the exhaust system on turbo models, which reduces exhaust backpressure, will lead to lean fuel mixtures and excessive spark advance. This could cause serious engine damage.

Combining two types of lubricant can cause bearing failure. Wash used or new bearings with solvent and blot dry with lint-free cloth before packing with new lubricant.

BASIC NEW CAR LIMITED WARRANTY

Everything is covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This basic warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair or adjust any item (except tires) on the vehicle that has been proven defective in material, workmanship or factory preparation under normal use.

OWNER'S CHOICE COVERAGE

Beginning in 1992, Chrysler offers a choice of new car coverage. At the time of purchase, owner must choose either the 12-month/12,000-mile warranty with 7-year/70,000-mile powertrain coverage OR the 36-month/36,000-mile basic new car warranty covering any item that's defective in material, workmanship or factory preparation for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Under the 36-month/36,000 mile warranty, the following items are only warranted for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first

1987-89 POWERTRAIN WARRANTY

This warranty takes effect upon the expiration of the 12-month/12,000-mile Basic New Car Limited Warranty and covers the following components for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This warranty is subject to a 100.00 deductible for each repair visit.

1990-94 POWERTRAIN WARRANTY

Covers parts and components listed below, for 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, starting from vehicle's warranty start date.

1. Gasoline Engine Cylinder block and all internal parts, cylinder head assemblies, core plugs, valve covers, oil pan, timing gear drive belts and/or chains and cover, oil pump, intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump and housing, turbocharger housings and internal parts, turbocharger wastegate actuator, seals and gaskets.
2. Transmission/Transfer Case Case and all internal parts, oil pan, torque converter with starter ring gear, flex plate, bell housing, flywheel, seals and gaskets.
3. FWD Components Transaxle electronic controller, transaxle case and all internal parts, oil pan and differential cover, torque converter and drive plate with starter ring gear, bellhousing, flywheel, drive shaft assemblies, universal joints, housing and boots, seals and gaskets.

CORROSION WARRANTY

This warranty is effective starting on the date vehicle is delivered or put in use, whichever occurs first. It covers all rust-through damage to any sheet metal panels due to corrosion. A 36-month, unlimited mileage warranty covers all body sheet metal panels. For "outer-body" sheet metal panels, the limits are 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

EMISSION SYSTEM "DEFECT" & "PERFORMANCE" WARRANTY (FEDERAL)

Under the "Defect" Warranty, Chrysler warrants that the vehicle is free from defects in material and workmanship which would cause it to fail to meet Federal standards for emission control system set at the time the vehicle was built.

The "Performance" Warranty covers all costs of repairing or adjusting any components or parts as needed in order for the vehicle to pass a Federally-approved state or local emissions test.

The following is a list of some of the primary components that affect the emissions of the vehicle and are covered by both warranties. Other emission control parts related to these components are covered by the "Performance" warranty, where applicable. If another part fails due to the failure of one of these components, both parts are covered. Warranties begin on warranty start date and last for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

CALIFORNIA EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WARRANTY

This warranty applies to all vehicles certified for sale or sold for initial registration in the State of California. Chrysler warrants that the vehicle is free from defects in material and workmanship which would cause it to fail to conform with applicable regulations set by the California Air Resources Board at the time of sale.

This warranty shall apply until the first scheduled maintenance point specified by Chrysler. If no maintenance is scheduled, warranty is applied for 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This warranty also covers some emissions parts (which were installed as original parts) for 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Warranty begins on the date vehicle is sold to original purchaser or first placed in service or original use, whichever occurs first.

RELAY IDENTIFICATION (1987-88 MODELS)

The fuse access panel is behind the steering column cover. To remove the panel, pull it out from the bottom and slide the tabs out from the top. The relay and flasher module is behind the fuse panel. A relay or flasher can be removed by pulling it straight down from the module.
