DTC P1389: NO ASD RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE AT PCM Dodge Ram Van B2500

Note. DTC P1389: NO ASD RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE AT PCM is monitored with ignition on, battery voltage more than 10.4 volts and engine speed more than 40 RPM. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses no voltage when ASD relay is energized. Possible causes are: DTC does not match freeze frame DTC, defective ASD relay, defective PCM, defective connectors or defective wiring.

  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is displayed and displayed count is "0", go to step 4). If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", go to next step.
  2. Determine if DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC. If DTC is equal to FREEZE FRAME DTC, go to next step. If DTC is not equal to FREEZE FRAME DTC, repair DTC using FREEZE FRAME data.
  3. Using scan tool, read and record FREEZE FRAME data. Road test vehicle to try to duplicate FREEZE FRAME data conditions. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is displayed and displayed count is "0", go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", go to step 11).
  4. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to step 7).
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove ASD relay. ASD relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located next to battery. Refer to label under PDC cover for relay location. Disconnect PCM Gray connector. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. Clean and/or repair connector as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance at ASD relay, output circuit (Dark Green/Orange wire) between ASD relay connector and PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open ASD relay output circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  6. At this time, PCM is assumed to be defective. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  7. Ensure ignition is off. Remove ASD relay. ASD relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located next to battery. Refer to label under PDC cover for relay location. Clean and/or repair connector as necessary. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a voltmeter, check voltage on ASD relay connector, fused B+ circuit (Red/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open fused B+ circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  8. Ensure ignition is off. Substitute a known-good ASD relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine does not start, go to next step. If engine starts, replace ASD relay. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  9. Turn ignition off. Remove ASD relay. Disconnect PCM Gray connector. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. Clean and/or repair connector as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of ASD relay, output circuit (Dark Green/Orange wire) between ASD relay connector and PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open ASD relay output circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  10. At this time, PCM is assumed to be defective. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  11. Turn ignition off. Conditions required to set DTC are not present at this time. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness for damage. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A. If connectors and wiring harness are okay, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Start engine and allow it to idle. Wiggle wiring harness from ASD relay to PCM while monitoring scan tool. ASD relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located next to battery. Refer to label under PDC cover for relay location. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC P1389: NO ASD RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE AT PCM returns, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused DTC to return. Perform TEST VER-2A. If DTC P1389: NO ASD RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE AT PCM does not return, go to next step.
  13. At this time, problem is assumed to be intermittent or inactive. See «INACTIVE DTC CONDITION»(ref-139160-S32382818132002042600000) . Test is complete.
