Body Control Modules: Other Dodge Durango I

AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM)

Air Bag Control Module (ACM) continuously monitors air bag system for faults to ensure driver-side and/or passenger-side air bag deployment will occur when necessary. There are no external impact sensors, it is all contained within ACM. Other components of air bag system include AIRBAG warning light, driver-side air bag module, clockspring, passenger-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag on/off switch and related wiring. When vehicle is started, AIRBAG warning light should illuminate for 6-8 seconds, then turn off. If AIRBAG warning light remains illuminated, a fault is indicated in air bag control system or CCD bus network between all body control modules. ACM has its own set of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). ACM DTC are not permanent and can clear when reason for code is corrected. When AIRBAG warning light is illuminated, see appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM)

On base-line models, CTM is hard wired to switches or indicators for chime and warning buzzer operations only, and does not communicate with any other modules through CCD bus. If a fault is present, repair switch and/or wiring or replace CTM as necessary.

On high-line models, Central Timer Module (CTM) is the main Body Control Module (BCM) for vehicle. CTM communicates with other modules through CCD bus and controls chime and warning indicators, courtesy entry lighting, Power Door Locks (PDL), Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), speed sensitive and intermittent wiper/washers and vehicle anti-theft monitoring related functions. CTM is fully addressible with DRBIII(R) scan tool, and is the preferred method for diagnostics. Retrieving CTM reports, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), or monitor actuator inputs and activate output commands can all be done using DRBIII(R), or compatible generic scan tool. During self-diagnostics or testing, if actuators and inputs can be monitored, and outputs are cycled when commanded, the fault is usually within the CTM.

CCD BUS SYSTEM

The Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus is a pair of twisted wires traveling from module-to-module to receive and deliver coded information between modules. The code identifies information message and its importance. Codes are sent to all modules, and are addressed to appropriate module for which information is intended. When multiple messages attempt to gain access to CCD bus at once, codes are assigned by address, level of importance and priority ranking. The 2 twisted wires used by CCD bus system are called bus (+) positive and bus (-) (negative). Both wires carry approximately 1.8-2.8 volts. CCD bus network consists of some modules with "bias" and some modules with "termination".

"Bias" is the voltage divider of CTM network, and places both CCD bus (+) and CCD bus (-) circuits at 1.8-2.8 volts. "Termination" is the part of circuitry required to complete the voltage loop in CCD bus circuit and also provides some electromagnetic protection for CCD bus network. Termination in most all CCD bus system applications have a 120-ohm resistor connecting the CCD bus (+) and CCD bus (-) circuits, thus completing the CCD bus circuit. If a fault exists in CCD bus network, it must be corrected before proceeding with any other testing or diagnostics. COMPASS MINI TRIP COMPUTER (CMTC)

The Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) is located in overhead console or Overhead Travel Information System (OTIS). This dual-function display provides a digital readout of ambient (outside) temperature and 8 primary compass readings to indicate direction in which vehicle is facing. CMTC is self-calibrated and requires no adjustment. The word CAL will be displayed to indicate that compass is in fast calibrating mode. The CAL display will be turned off after vehicle has completed 3 continuous circles without stopping, in an area free of magnetic disturbance, and calibration of compass is complete. If module displays ambient temperature while compass display is blank, vehicle must be demagnetized. If compass display still goes blank after vehicle is demagnetized, Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) module must be replaced.

The Overhead Travel Information System (OTIS) provides vehicle operator with supplementary information on a Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) in the overhead console (if equipped), and is controlled by the Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC). Vehicle operator selects and resets display functions through use of US/M, STEP, C/T and RESET buttons. OTIS obtains most of its information from the network through CCD bus.

OTIS powers up when it senses vehicle (battery) voltage through ignition input circuit. When OTIS is powered-up, the VFD display is blank, then becomes illuminated by segments of VFD. During this time, OTIS sends and receives information from CCD bus to determine what to display after initialization. OTIS will display dashes (- -) for any screens for which it did not receive CCD bus messages during initialization. Dashes will be replaced by valid information if and when it is received.

MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (MIC)

With several different Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) packages available, typical high-line model MICs include, but are not limited to, a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, water temperature gauge, voltmeter, an information Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) and a series of warning lights (if equipped).

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sends signals necessary for MIC to position gauges. MIC receives continuously updated messages through CCD bus and translates them to gauge positions. Central Timer Module (CTM) sends necessary signals for all indicator lights and dimming level settings to MIC through CCD bus, when ignition switch is in ON or START positions. Malfunction (CHECK ENGINE) indicator light state is sent to CTM from PCM through CCD bus. VFD odometer/trip display works when ignition switch is in ON or START positions from CTM, which also stores actual mileage information that odometer displays. If CCD bus network is transmitting data, odometer will display dashes (- -) instead of mileage reading. All other MIC features only work when ignition switch is in ON position.

VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM (VTSS)

Anti-theft control system, or Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS), monitors vehicle doors, hood, trunk key cylinder and ignition for unauthorized operation/entry. When alarm is triggered, horn will sound for up to 3 minutes and parking lights will flash for 15-18 minutes. When an unauthorized entry into vehicle occurs, VTSS module signals Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through CCD bus to disable the ignition system. PCM then "zeros out" pulse width of fuel injectors, thus preventing engine from starting (start/stall condition). The vehicle will remain disabled until VTSS is disarmed.

To verify if VTSS is operational, perform the following procedure. Open driver's door (all others closed). Remove ignition key. Lock doors with interior Power Door Lock (PDL) switch. Close driver's door. If VTSS SET light flashes, system is armed and operational. If VTSS SET light does not flash, 20 engine cranking cycles have not occurred or there is a problem with VTSS system. VTSS will not arm if doors are locked using keys or manually locked from door knob. If horn will sound 3 times when either front door is unlocked, indicating alarm was activated.

CCD BUS FAILURE MESSAGES

If a CCD bus fault message is present, it must be repaired before proceeding with any other repair procedures. If CCD bus messages are stored, go to appropriate procedure for displayed fault message. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) and SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY tables.

SYSTEM TESTS

CAUTIONEnsure ignition switch is in OFF position prior to disconnecting any system control module or vehicle battery. Damage to control modules could occur, if power is directly removed from some control modules.

Note. A scan tool with 2000 diagnostic program cartridge, body diagnostics cable, oil pressure gauge, jumper wires, and DVOM will be needed for system tests. To access Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), proceed to RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

CHIME SYSTEM

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after any repairs.

Chime Inoperative - Exterior Lights On & Driver Door Open

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, read driver door ajar switch state. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display driver's door ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to «DRIVER DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT OPEN»(ref-3317-S10440149552000042500000) .
  2. Turn headlights on. If scan tool displays KEY-IN IGN CHIME STATE ON, replace Central Timer Module (CTM). Verify repair is complete. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool displays does not display key-in ignition chime state as specified, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn headlights off. Disconnect headlight switch connector. Disconnect CTM connector C1. Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between headlight switch connector and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 9 (Light Blue wire). If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue wire between CTM, headlight switch and key-in switch connectors. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove headlight switch from dash. Measure resistance of headlight switch. Measure between terminals of headlight switch corresponding headlight switch connector terminals No. 3 (Black wire) and No. 4 (Light Blue wire). If reading is less than 10 ohms, fault is not present at this time. If reading is 10 ohms or more, replace headlight switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Chime Inoperative With Warning Light/Gauge

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connectors. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) connectors. On base-line models, measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire on Dakota or Light Green/Red wire on Durango between MIC connector C2 terminal No. 7 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 12. On high-line models, measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire on Dakota or Light Green/Red wire on Durango between MIC connector C2 terminal No. 7 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 2. If reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in tone request circuit (Light Green/Orange wire on Dakota; Light Green/Red wire on Durango) as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  2. Connect CTM connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a fused jumper wire connected to ground, probe MIC connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Orange wire on Dakota) or (Light Green/Red wire on Durango). If CTM chimes, replace MIC. If CTM does not chime, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Chime Inoperative At All Times

Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, actuate CHIME, then actuate EXTERNAL CHIME. If both chime states worked when actuated by scan tool, system is currently operating as designed. Check for poor connections or damage to wiring harness. If either chime state did not work when actuated, replace Central Timer Module (CTM). Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

Chime Inoperative - Key In Ignition & Driver Door Open

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Open driver's door. If scan tool display reads DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display driver's door ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to step 6 .
  2. Close driver's door. Read scan tool display for key-in ignition chime state. If scan tool display does not read KEY-IN IGN CHIME STATE ON, go to next step. If scan tool displays reads KEY-IN IGN CHIME STATE ON, replace Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect key-in ignition switch 4-pin connector from ignition switch. Measure resistance between ground and key-in ignition switch connector Black wire terminal on Dakota (Black/Red wire on Durango). If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire (Black/Red wire on Durango) between ground and key-in ignition switch 4-pin connector. Repair as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Disconnect CTM connector C1. Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 9 and key-in ignition switch 4-pin connector. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Measure resistance between terminals of key-in ignition switch, with key in ignition switch lock cylinder. If reading is less than 20 ohms, no fault is detected at this time. If reading is greater than 20 ohms, replace damaged ignition lock cylinder or replace complete ignition switch assembly. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's door ajar switch connector. Disconnect CTM connector C1. Measure resistance of Black/Light Blue wire between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 1 and driver's door ajar switch connector. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Measure resistance between ground and driver's door ajar switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Green wire as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Connect a jumper wire between driver's door ajar switch harness connector terminals. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool display reads DR DOOR AJAR SW CLOSED, replace driver's door ajar/latch assembly. If scan tool does not display driver door ajar switch state as CLOSED, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Chime Remains On With Ignition On

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) connectors. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and tone request signal circuit at MIC connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Orange wire). If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Connect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position, and wait 10 seconds. Ensure headlight dimmer switch is not set to defeat interior lighting. Ensure all doors are closed and dome or courtesy lighting features are not activated. Ensure that no gauge hi/low warning indicator or other warning light indicator are illuminated. Disconnect MIC connectors. If chime tone stops, replace MIC. If chime tone continues, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Chime Sounds With Driver Door Open, Key Removed

  1. Ensure headlight switch is turned off. Remove key from ignition switch. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, select display for key-in ignition switch state. If scan tool display reads KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE ON, go to next step. If display does not read key-in ignition chime state as ON, system is operating properly. Perform appropriate test procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.
  2. Disconnect headlight switch connector. Disconnect key-in ignition switch connector. Disconnect ignition switch or ignition switch pigtail connector (as equipped). Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 9 (Light Blue wire). If reading is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Measure resistance between terminals of key-in switch, with key removed from ignition switch lock cylinder. If reading is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition switch. If reading is 10 ohms or more, go to next step.
  4. Connect CTM connector C1. Connect headlight switch connector. While monitoring scan tool display KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE ON, disconnect headlight switch connector. If message displayed changes state from ON with headlight switch connected, to OFF with headlight switch disconnected, replace headlight switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool message displayed does not change, perform appropriate test procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.

COMMUNICATIONS

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs.

Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve messages. If scan tool message is blank, disconnect scan tool. Ensure ground circuit has continuity at DLC terminal No. 4. Ensure 12 volts exists at DLC terminal No. 16. Check for power supply at DLC terminal No. 16 from Power Distribution Center (PDC) fuse No. 12. Try another scan tool and/or cable. If scan tool Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) or symptom fault message is present, see following DTC message index or symptoms index for messages displayed. Proceed to appropriate procedure for DTC or fault message(s) present. See DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY and SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY tables.

Bus (+) &/Or Bus (-) Open

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire). Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If either reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, repair open in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both readings are 1.8-2.8 volts, replace scan tool cable or scan tool.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Using DVOM, measure resistance of White/Black wire between DLC connector terminal No. 11 and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 9. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Measure resistance of Violet/Brown wire between DLC connector terminal No. 3 and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 10. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Bus (+) & Bus (-) Shorted Together

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Black connector C3 (Gray connector on Durango). Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace PCM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module. CAB module is mounted to top of hydraulic unit, near master cylinder. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace CAB module. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace MIC circuit board. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace CMTC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect radio connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace radio. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Wait 2 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM). CTM is located in passenger-side corner of dash, behind glove box. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool displays BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminals No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire) and No. 11 (White/Black wire) on DLC connector. If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short between Violet/Brown wire and White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace scan tool cable or scan tool as necessary.

Bus Bias Level Too Low Or Too High

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire). Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If either reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, repair open in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both readings are 1.8-2.8 volts, replace scan tool cable or scan tool.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Violet/Brown wire). Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire). If both resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Ensure interior lighting if off. Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminals No. 10 (Violet/Brown wire) and No. 9 (White/Black wire). If either resistance reading is less than 1000 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both resistance readings are 1000 ohms or more, go to next step.
  4. Measure resistance of all MIC ground circuits. On Dakota, measure between ground and MIC connector C1 terminals No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire) and No. 5 (Black wire). On Durango, measure between ground and MIC connector C1 terminals No. 4 (Black/Tan wire) and No. 5 (Black wire). On all models, if any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in affected circuit. If all resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Bus Bias

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire). Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If either reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, go to next step. If both readings are 1.8-2.8 volts, replace scan tool cable or scan tool.
  2. Remove and inspect fuse No. 17 (15-amp) from Junction Block (JB). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Ensure fuse is correct application for circuit and fuse is not blown. If fuse is incorrect for circuit or fuse is blown, replace fuse No. 17 (15-amp). Inspect Dark Blue/White wire in wiring harness between JB, Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) and any other related components for cause of blown fuse. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If fuse is not blown and correct application, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove MIC. Install any fuses previously removed. Measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Yellow/White wire on Dakota; Pink wire on Durango). If reading is 10 volts or less, locate and repair open in fused battery circuit. On Dakota, check for an open in Yellow/White wire between MIC and fuse "F" (20-amp) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). On Durango, check for an open in Pink wire between MIC and fuse No. 12 (15-amp) in JB. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . On all models, if reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire on Dakota: Black/Tan wire on Durango). Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 5 (Black wire). If all readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If any reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in failed ground circuit. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Ensure all interior lighting is turned off. Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Violet/Brown wire). Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire). If either reading is less than 700 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both readings are 700 ohms or more, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance of Violet/Brown wire between MIC connector C1 terminal No. 10 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/Brown wire between MIC and DLC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Measure resistance of White/Black wire between MIC connector C1 terminal No. 9 and DLC terminal No. 16. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Black wire between MIC and DLC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Inspect all related connectors for good terminal contact and Repair connectors as necessary. If all connectors are okay, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Response: Air Bag Control Module (ACM)

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 2 minutes before proceeding. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 21 (Violet/Brown wire). If reading is 1.8-2.8 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. Measure voltage between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 22 (White/Black wire). If reading is 1.8-2.8 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Ensure battery is fully charged. Measure resistance between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Pink wire). Measure resistance between terminal No. 4 of ACM and ground. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Pink wire or replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .
  4. Measure voltage between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 14 (Light Green/Yellow wire). Measure voltage between ground and ACM connector terminal No. 15 (Dark Blue/Yellow wire). If both readings are more than 10 volts, go to next step. If either reading is 10 volts or less, inspect fuse No. 18 (10-amp) and fuse No. 19 (10-amp) in Junction Block (JB). If both fuses are okay, repair open or high resistance in Light Green/Yellow wire and/or Dark Blue/Yellow wire. If fuses are blown, repair short to ground in Light Green/Yellow wire and/or Dark Blue/Yellow wire. Replace fuses.Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) after repairs.
  5. Inspect connectors for good terminal contact and Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Wait 2 minutes before proceeding. Replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .

No Response: Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) Module

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a scan tool, select BODY, then Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC), then ENGINE. If scan tool established communications with any modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with any modules. See «BUS (+) &/OR BUS (-) OPEN»(ref-3317-S30685393572000042500000) or «BUS (+) & BUS (-) SHORTED TOGETHER»(ref-3317-S16276975412000042500000) .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect fuse No. 3 (15-amp on Dakota; 10-amp on Durango) in Junction Block (JB). If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to 7 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Replace fuse No. 3 (15-amp on Dakota; 10-amp on Durango) in JB. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between JB and Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) module. Perform wiggle test and check poor connection or intermittent short to ground, repair wiring harness as necessary. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) . If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove fuse No. 3 (15-amp) in JB. Disconnect CAB module connector. Measure resistance between ground and CAB connector terminal No. 4 (Red/Dark Blue wire). If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Dark Blue wire. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect CAB module. Install fuse No. 3 (15-amp on Dakota; 10-amp on Durango) in JB. Disconnect any other components connected to fuse No. 3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, actuate ant0i-lock brake pump motor. If fuse No. 3 blows, go to step 12 . If fuse No. 3 (15-amp) is okay, go to next step .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CAB module connector. Remove fuse No. 3 (15-amp) from JB. Measure resistance of Red/Dark Blue wire between CAB connector terminal No. 4 and appropriate terminal in JB for fuse No. 3. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Dark Blue wire between JB and CAB connector. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  8. Measure resistance between ground and CAB connector terminal No. 13 (Black wire). If reading is less than one ohm, go to next step. If reading is one ohm or more, repair open in Black wire. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CAB module connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between CAB connector terminals No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire) and No. 10 (White/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, perform CCD bus test. If scan tool display reads BUS SHORTED TOGETHER, perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) . If scan tool does not read BUS SHORTED TOGETHER, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove jumper wire. Connect a fused jumper wire between CAB connector terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, perform CCD bus test. If scan tool display reads BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not read BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, locate and repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  11. Remove jumper wire. Connect a fused jumper wire between CAB connector terminal No. 10 (White/Black wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, perform CCD bus test. If scan tool display reads BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not read BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, locate and repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Replace CAB module. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .

No Response: Central Timer Module (CTM)

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Remove and inspect fuse No. 13 (20-amp) in Junction Block (JB). Ensure fuse is correct. Using DVOM, check power supply terminal for fuse No. 13 (Red/Black wire) of JB. If reading is less than 10 volts, repair open or short in Red/Black wire between JB and Power Distribution Center (PDC) fuse No. 7 (50-amp). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or more, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Install fuse No. 13 (20-amp) in JB. Measure voltage at CTM connector C1 terminal No. 14 (Red wire). If reading is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If reading is less than 10 volts, repair open or short to ground in Red wire between CTM connector and fuse No. 13 (20-amp) in JB. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage at CTM connector C1 terminal No. 4 (Dark Blue wire) on base-line models. Measure voltage at CTM connector C1 terminal No. 8 (Dark Blue wire) on high-line models. If reading is volts or more, go to next step. If reading is less than 10 volts, repair open in Dark Blue wire between CTM and fuse No. 6 (20-amp) in JB. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Measure voltage at CTM connector C2 terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue/White wire). If reading is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If scan tool displays SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not display short to ground, repair open in Violet/Brown wire.   8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove jumper wire from terminal No. 16 and backprobe CTM connector C2 terminal No. 17 (White/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Perform CCD bus test. If scan tool displays SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not display short to ground, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Response: Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC)

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect overhead console harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and overhead console connector terminal No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire) on Dakota (Black/Tan wire on Durango). If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Green wire (Black/Tan wire on Durango). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. Connect test light between ground and overhead console connector terminal No. 5 (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open or short in Pink wire between overhead console connector and fuse No. 12 (15-amp) of Junction Block (JB). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect test light between ground and overhead console connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/White wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open or short in Dark Blue/White wire between overhead console connector and fuse No. 11 (10-amp) of JB. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. While observing scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS VOLTAGE. Turn internal bias test on. Connect jumper wire between ground and overhead console connector terminal No. 2 (Violet/Brown wire). If reading drops to about zero volts, go to next step. If reading does not drop to about zero volts, repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. While observing scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS VOLTAGE. Turn internal bias test on. Connect jumper wire between ground and overhead console connector terminal No. 8 (White/Black wire). If reading drops to about zero volts, go to next step. If reading does not drop to about zero volts, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Compass Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC) from overhead console. Inspect wiring harness between overhead console connector and connector for CMTC. Check connectors for good terminal contact. If wiring and connectors are not okay, replace overhead console. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace CMTC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Response: Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC)

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Mechanical Instrument Custer (MIC) connector C1. On Dakota, measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire). On Durango, measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Tan wire). On all models, measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 5 (Black wire). If both readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in failed ground circuit. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. On Dakota models, turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Yellow/White wire). If reading is 10 volts or less, check for an open in Yellow/White wire between MIC connector and fuse "F" (20-amp) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 10 volts, go to step 4 .
  3. On Durango models, turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Pink wire).   4. On all models, measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 7 (Dark Green/Red wire). If reading is 10 volts or less, check for an open in Dark Green/Red wire between MIC and ignition switch. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION under WIRING DIAGRAMS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  5. Measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/White wire). If reading is 10 volts or less, check for an open in Dark Blue/White wire between MIC and Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 17. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION under WIRING DIAGRAMS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  6. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS VOLTAGE and turn on internal bus bias. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Violet/Brown wire). If CCD bus voltage reading drops to about zero volts, go to next step. If reading does not drop to about zero volts, repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS VOLTAGE. Turn internal bias test on. Connect jumper wire between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire). If CCD bus voltage reading drops to about zero volts, go to next step. If reading does not drop to about zero volts, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Response: Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Attempt to start and run engine. If engine does not run, see appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If engine runs, turn engine off and go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Black connector C3 (Gray connector C3 on Durango). Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect jumper wire between ground and PCM connector C3 terminal No. 30 (Violet/Brown wire). Using scan tool, perform CCD bus test. If scan tool displays SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not display short to ground, repair open in Violet/Brown wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Move jumper wire to PCM connector C3 terminal No. 28 (White/Black wire). Perform CCD bus test. If scan tool displays SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not display short to ground, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) .

No Response From Radio

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 8 (10-amp). Ensure fuse is correct for circuit. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step 3 .
  2. Disconnect radio 2-pin connector C3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Violet/Brown wire terminal of radio connector C3. Measure between ground and White/Black wire terminal of radio connector C3. If both readings are 1.8-2.8 volts, go to next step. If either reading is not 1.8-2.8 volts, repair open in Violet/Brown and/or White/Black wire as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Gray radio 7-pin connector C1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 7 (Pink wire). If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open or short to ground in Pink wire between radio connector C3 and fuse No. 12 (15-amp) of JB. If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Replace any previously removed or blown fuses. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and Gray radio connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Red/White wire). If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open or short to ground in Red/White wire between Gray radio connector C1 and fuse No. 8 (10-amp) of JB. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Inspect ground strap and antenna for correct installation. Repair as needed. Disconnect radio ground strap. Measure resistance between ground and ground strap connector. If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace radio ground strap. If reading is less 5 ohms, ground strap and antenna are okay, replace radio. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Termination

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Black connector C3 (Gray connector C3 on Durango). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM connector C3 terminal No. 30 (Violet/Brown wire). Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS. Perform CCD bus test.   2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove jumper wire. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM connector C3 terminal No. 28 (White/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS. Perform CCD bus test. If scan tool displays SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool does not display short to ground, repair open in White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) .

Not Receiving Bus Messages Correctly

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. On models equipped with manual transmission, go to next step. On models with automatic transmission, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact.   4. If not equipped with Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC), go to next step. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CMTC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace CMTC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect radio 2-pin connector C3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace radio.   6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace CTM.   7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 2 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM). Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect all previously disconnected connectors and inspect connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If CCD bus failure message changes, fault is not present at this time. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, repair or replace scan tool or scan tool cable(s) as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Bus Short To 5 Volts

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Black connector C3 (Gray connector C3 on Durango). Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool display reads BUS OPERATIONAL, go to step 4 . If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect all PCM connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM connector C3 terminal No. 30 (Violet/Brown wire) and all 5-volt supply circuits to PCM. See «PCM 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT INDEX»(ref-3317-S34513266322000082100000) table. If any reading is less than 800 ohms, repair short between those circuits tested. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If all readings are 800 ohms or more, go to next step.
  3. Measure resistance between PCM connector C3 terminal No. 28 (White/Black wire) and all 5-volt supply circuits to PCM. See «PCM 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT INDEX»(ref-3317-S34513266322000082100000) table. If any reading is less than 800 ohms, repair short between circuits tested. If all readings are 800 ohms or more, check all PCM connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace PCM.   5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) module. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace CAB module. Perform «CONTROLLER ANTI-LOCK BRAKE (CAB) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S37139844452000082800000) .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC), if equipped. If not equipped with CMTC, go to next step. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace CMTC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step.   9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 2 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM). Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all modules of the CCD bus network are disconnected. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire), then DLC connector terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If either reading is 4 volts or more, repair short to voltage in affected circuit. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both readings are less than 4 volts, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect all previously disconnected connectors and inspect connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If CCD bus failure message changes, fault is not present at this time. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, and connectors are okay, repair or replace scan tool or scan tool cable(s) as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Bus Short To Battery

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to step 3 . If scan tool display changes after disconnecting PCM, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe PCM connector C1 terminals No. 31 (Black/Tan wire) and No. 32 (Black/Tan wire). If test light illuminates and is bright, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) . If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate bright, repair open or high resistance between ground and affected Black/Tan wire circuit.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector(s). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If connectors are okay, go to step 6 .
  4. On high-line models, go to next step. On base-line models, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Black wire). Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 8 (Black/Light Green wire or Black/Tan wire). If all readings are less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If any reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in failed ground circuit. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  5. On high-line models, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 3 (Black wire). Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Black/Light Green wire or Black/Tan wire). If all readings are less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If any reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in failed ground circuit. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  6. On all models not equipped with Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) in overhead console, go to step 8 . On all models with CMTC, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CMTC connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and CMTC connector Black wire terminal. On Dakota, measure resistance between ground and CMTC connector Black/Light Green wire terminal (Black/Tan wire terminal on Durango). On all models, if both readings are less than 5 ohms, replace CMTC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If either reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in failed ground circuit.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) from dash. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to step 10 . If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 5 (Black wire). Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire) on Dakota (Black/Tan wire on Durango). On all models, if both readings are less than 5 ohms, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If either reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in failed ground circuit.
  10. For models with manual transmission, go to next step. On models with automatic transmission, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact.   12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect radio 2-pin connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace radio. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  13. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 2 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM). Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .
  14. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure all modules of the CCD bus network are disconnected. Using a DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 3 (Violet/Brown wire), then DLC connector terminal No. 11 (White/Black wire). If either reading is more than .2 volt, repair short to voltage in affected circuit(s). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both readings are .2 volt or less, go to next step.
  15. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect all previously disconnected connectors and inspect connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If CCD bus failure message changes, fault is not present at this time. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, and connectors are okay, repair or replace scan tool or scan tool cable(s) as necessary. Bus Short To Ground

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector or battery.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and DLC connector terminal No. 5 (Black/Tan wire). If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If readings is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Tan wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. For models with manual transmission, go to next step. On models with automatic transmission, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact.   7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector(s). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If CCD bus failure message changes, check all connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ACM. Perform «AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S01801195252000082800000) .
  10. Ensure interior lighting if off. Measure resistance between ground and MIC connector C1 terminals No. 10 (Violet/Brown wire) and terminal No. 9 (White/Black wire). If either resistance reading is less than 700 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/Brown wire or White/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If both resistance readings are 700 ohms or more, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect all previously disconnected connectors and inspect connectors for good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If CCD bus failure message changes, fault is not present at this time. If scan tool displays same CCD bus failure message, and connectors are okay, repair or replace scan tool or scan tool cable(s) as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

DOOR AJAR SYSTEM

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs are complete.

Driver Door Ajar Circuit Open

  1. Disconnect driver's door ajar switch connector from driver's door latch assembly. Ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Connect a fused jumper wire between driver's door ajar switch connector Black/Light Blue wire and Black/Light Green wire. Using scan tool, read driver's door ajar switch state. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, replace driver's door latch/ajar switch assembly. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool does not display driver door ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect jumper wire from Black/Light Green wire terminal and connect it to ground. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, repair open ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire) as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool does not display driver door ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Measure resistance of Black/Light Blue wire between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 1 and driver's door ajar switch connector. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire.

Driver Door Ajar Circuit Shorted

  1. Disconnect driver's door ajar switch connector from driver's door latch assembly. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, read driver's door ajar switch state. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display driver's door jar switch state as CLOSED, replace shorted driver door latch/ajar switch assembly. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire). If reading is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Black/Light Blue wire between CTM connector C1 and driver's door ajar switch connector. If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Liftgate Ajar Circuit Open (Durango)

  1. Open liftgate door. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, read liftgate ajar switch state. If scan tool displays LIFTGATE AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, fault is not present at this time. Retest system. If conditions remain, refer to appropriate procedure(s) for symptoms present or fault messages displayed. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool does not display liftgate ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect liftgate ajar switch connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and liftgate ajar switch connector Tan/Black wire terminal. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Disconnect liftgate ajar switch connector. Disconnect CTM connector terminal No. 2. Measure resistance between liftgate ajar switch connector Tan/Black wire terminal and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 15. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan/Black wire between liftgate ajar switch and CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Ensure liftgate ajar switch is in unlatched position. Measure resistance across terminals of liftgate latch ajar switch. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, replace defective liftgate latch switch. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Liftgate Ajar Circuit Shorted (Durango)

  1. Remove liftgate panel. Disconnect liftgate ajar switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, read liftgate ajar switch state. If scan tool displays LIFTGATE AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display LIFTGATE AJAR SWITCH OPEN, replace liftgate ajar switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 15 (Tan/Black wire). If reading is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Tan/Black wire. If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Passenger Door Ajar Circuit Open

Note. On 4-door models, rear door and passenger door ajar sense circuit (Tan/Red wire) splice is located beneath base scuff plate of driver's door sill.

  1. Access passenger's door ajar switch located in passenger's door ajar/latch assembly. Disconnect passenger's door ajar switch connector. Measure resistance between ground and Black/Light Green wire of passenger's door ajar switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .0
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Tan/Black wire between passenger's door ajar switch connector and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 15. If reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Tan/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Disconnect driver's door ajar switch connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect door ajar/latch switch connector Tan/Black wire terminal to ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool display reads PS DOOR AJAR SW state as CLOSED, replace passenger's door/ajar latch assembly. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool does not display passenger's door ajar switch state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Replace Central Timer Module (CTM). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Passenger Door Ajar Circuit Shorted

Note. On 4-door models, passenger door ajar sense circuit (Tan/Red wire) splice is located beneath base scuff plate of driver's door sill.

  1. Ensure all doors are closed. Using scan tool, read passenger's door ajar switch state. While monitoring scan tool, systematically disconnect door lock/ajar switch connectors from passenger door, right rear door and left rear door. If scan tool displays PASS DOOR AJAR SW OPEN after disconnecting a door ajar switch, replace shorted door ajar switch from door lock/ajar switch assembly. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool display does not change, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. On base-line models, measure between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 2 (Tan/Red wire). On high-line models, measure between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 5 (Tan/Red wire). On all models, if reading is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Tan/Red wire. If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after any repairs.

All Gauges Inoperative

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). If scan tool displays a NO RESPONSE message, go to appropriate procedure for message displayed. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool display is normal, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM TEST for Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool displays PCM INACTIVE ON BUS, see «NO RESPONSE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)»(ref-3317-S04709199212000042500000) under COMMUNICATIONS. If scan tool does not display PCM fault message, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. On Dakota, remove and inspect Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 17 (10-amp). On Durango, remove and inspect Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 17 (15-amp). On all models, if fuse is blown, go to step 5 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  4. Install fuse No. 17 to JB. Disconnect MIC connector C1. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If fuse blows immediately, go to next step. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and MIC connector C1 terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/White wire). If reading is 11 volts or less, go to next step. If reading is more than 11 volts, go to step 6 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove fuse No. 17 from JB. Measure resistance of Dark Blue/White wire between MIC connector C1 terminal No. 2 and appropriate terminal of JB for fuse No. 17. If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair open or shorted condition in Dark Blue/White wire as necessary. If reading is 5 ohms or more, replace MIC. Replace blown or open JB fuse No. 17 (10-amp) on Dakota (15-amp fuse on Durango). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Ensure battery is okay and charging system is operating as designed. Ensure an overcharging condition does not exist. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If an overcharging condition exists, repair battery or charging system as necessary. If battery and charging system is okay, replace MIC. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. Replace fuse No. 17 (10-amp) on Dakota (15-amp fuse on Durango) in JB. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

One Gauge Not Operating Properly

  1. While monitoring inoperative gauge, perform «MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (MIC) SELF-TEST»(ref-3317-S01130288392000042500000) . If needle of inoperative gauge reached all calibration points during test, go to next step. If needle of inoperative gauge did not reach all calibration points during test, replace Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article.
  2. If problem is with speedometer, go to next step. If problem is with fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, tachometer gauge, temperature gauge or voltage gauge, check PCM for DTCs. Go to appropriate diagnostic procedure for DTC(s) present. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Using scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. If any PCM DTCs are present, see appropriate procedure for DTC message displayed. If no PCM DTC is present, perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Using scan tool, select BODY, SYSTEMS TESTS, then read PCM MONITOR state. If scan tool displays state as PCM ACTIVE ON BUS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PCM ACTIVE ON BUS state, go to «NO RESPONSE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM).»(ref-3317-S04709199212000042500000)
  4. Raise and support all wheels. Start engine and place gear selector in drive. Using scan tool, monitor Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) state and compare to speedometer reading. If VSS state value displayed on scan tool, and speedometer value displayed match, see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES for related symptoms. If VSS state and speedometer values do not match, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Any CCD Bus Cluster Light Inoperative

  1. Observe inoperative CCD bus cluster light, while performing «MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (MIC) SELF-TEST»(ref-3317-S01130288392000042500000) . If inoperative CCD bus cluster light did not illuminate during MIC self-test, go to next step. If inoperative CCD bus cluster light illuminated during MIC self-test, go to step 3 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, establish communications with MIC. If communications can be established, system fault is not present at this time and test is complete. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If communications can not be established with MIC, see appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Gain access to MIC. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. Remove and inspect inoperative CCD bus cluster light bulb, socket and wiring for cause of inoperative light. If bulb is burned out or open, replace bulb. Repair any socket or wiring concern as necessary. If bulb, socket and wiring are okay, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Any Hard Wired Light Inoperative

  1. Remove Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. Remove inoperative MIC bulb. If any bulb is burned out, replace bulb(s). If bulb is not burned out, go to next step.
  2. Using DVOM, check appropriate power supply or ground circuits to MIC exists. See «GROUND DISTRIBUTION»(ref-5593) or «POWER DISTRIBUTION»(ref-5594) article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-3317-S06783932792000042500000) . Repair wiring as necessary. If power and ground circuits are okay, replace MIC. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

OVERHEAD CONSOLE

Ensure Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), speedometer, and fuel gauge circuits and fuel gauge readings are operating as properly prior to diagnosing any related overhead console concern or messaging diagnostics. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. Also see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

Note. After repairs for any related Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) problem, vehicle must be driven continuously over 3 miles above 25 MPH in order to update Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) display.

Overhead Console Malfunctioning

Note. After repairs for any Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) problem, vehicle must be driven continuously over 3 miles above 25 MPH in order to update Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) display.

If any symptoms listed exist, Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) is defective. Replace CMTC. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs.

  1. AVERAGE MPH/FUEL ECON INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
  2. CMTC FAILS TO RESPOND TO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIMMING
  3. DISTANCE TO EMPTY INOPERATIVE OR WRONG

  6. TRIP ODOMETER INOPERATIVE OR WRONG

CMTC Shows Failed Message

Using scan tool, enter COMPASS/MINI TRIP, then SYSTEM TEST, and perform AUTO SELF TEST for overhead console Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC). If CMTC shows FAILED, replace CMTC. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST . If CMTC does not show failed, system is currently operating as designed.

CMTC Segments Fail To Illuminate

Using scan tool, enter COMPASS/MINI TRIP, then SYSTEM TEST, and perform AUTO SELF TEST for overhead console Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC). If CMTC does not show failed, system is currently operating as designed. If CMTC shows FAILED, replace CMTC. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

Incorrect Temperature Reading Beyond +/- 5

Note. After repairs for any Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) problem, vehicle must be driven continuously over 3 miles above 25 MPH in order to update Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) display.

If outside temperature and Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) reading vary by more than 5°F or less than 5°F actual outside temperature, ATS is defective. Replace ATS. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs.

Repairing "OC" In CMTC Display

Note. After repairs for any Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) problem, vehicle must be driven continuously more than 3 miles at speeds greater than 25 MPH in order to update Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) display.

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Ambient Temperature Sender (ATS) connector. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Connect jumper wire between ATS connector terminals. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) display on scan tool. If CMTC displays SC, replace ATS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If CMTC does not display SC, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect jumper wire and reconnect ATS. Turn ignition on, for 1-2 minutes, then turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CMTC module connector. Disconnect ATS. Connect a jumper wire between ground and ATS harness connector terminal No. 3 (Violet/Light Green wire). If CMTC displays SC, repair open in ground circuit between ATS connector (Black/Light Blue wire) terminal and ground. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If CMTC does not display SC, go to next step.
  3. Restore any previously disconnected components and connectors. Using a jumper wire connected to ground, backprobe CMTC harness connector terminal No. 3 (Violet/Light Green wire). If CMTC displays SC, repair open in Violet/Light Green wire between ATS harness connector and CMTC connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If CMTC does not display SC, replace CMTC module. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) after repair.

Repairing "SC" In CMTC Display

Note. After repairs for any Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) problem, vehicle must be driven continuously more than 3 miles at speeds greater than 25 MPH in order to update Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) display.

  1. Connect scan tool to Diagnostic Line Connector (DLC). Disconnect Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS) connector. Observe Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) display on scan tool. If CMTC displays OC, replace ATS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If CMTC does not display OC, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CMTC connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and ATS harness connector Violet/Light Green wire terminal. If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/Light Green wire between CMTC module and ATS. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  3. Measure resistance between CMTC harness connector Black/Light Blue wire and Violet/Light Green wire terminals. If reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short between Black/Light Blue wire and Violet/Light Green wire. If reading is 1000 ohms or more, replace CMTC module. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

POWER DOOR LOCK & RKE SYSTEMS

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs.

Door Lock Switch Failure

  1. On 2-door models, go to next step. On all other models, go to step 6 .
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure scan tool has communication between Central Timer Module (CTM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through CCD bus. Read and record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present. Clear DTCs as necessary. Using scan tool, read PWR DOOR LOCK state. If scan tool displays state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, inspect all related wiring harnesses and connectors for good terminal contact or damage. Repair connectors as necessary. If okay, fault is not present at this time. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's Power Door Lock (PDL) switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR LOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace driver's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect driver's PDL switch. Disconnect passenger's PDL switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR LOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Disconnect driver's door lock switch. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and driver's Power Door Lock (PDL) switch connector Orange/Violet wire terminal. If reading is less than .5 volt, replace driver's PDL switch. If reading is .5 volt or more, repair short to voltage in Orange/Violet wire between driver's PDL switch connector and in-line harness connector (located near passenger's door hinge) or repair short to voltage in Light Green/Black wire between in-line connector and passenger's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure scan tool has communication between Central Timer Module (CTM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through CCD bus. Read and record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present. Clear DTCs as necessary. Using scan tool, read power door lock switch state. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR LOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, inspect all related wiring harnesses and connectors for good terminal contact or damage. Repair connectors as necessary. If okay, fault is not present at this time. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's PDL switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR LOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace driver's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect driver's PDL switch. Disconnect passenger's PDL switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR LOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect CTM connector C2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1 (Orange/Violet wire). If reading is more than 1.5 volts, repair short to voltage in Orange/Violet wire between CTM and both PDL switch connectors. If reading is 1.5 volts or less, replace Central Timer Module (CTM). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Door Unlock Switch Failure

  1. On 2-door Dakota models, go to next step. On all other models, go to step 6 .
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure scan tool has communication between Central Timer Module (CTM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through CCD bus. Read and record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present. Clear DTCs as necessary. Using scan tool, read PWR DOOR UNLOCK state. If scan tool displays state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, inspect all related wiring harnesses and connectors for good terminal contact or damage. Repair connectors as necessary. If okay, fault is not present at this time. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's Power Door Lock (PDL) switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR UNLOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace driver's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect driver's PDL switch. Disconnect passenger's PDL switch connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool displays PWR DOOR UNLOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Disconnect driver's PDL switch connector. Using a DVOM, measure voltage at driver's PDL switch connector Pink/Violet wire terminal. If reading is less than .5 volt, replace passenger's PDL switch. If reading is .5 volt or more, repair short to voltage in Pink/Violet wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure scan tool has communication between Central Timer Module (CTM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through CCD bus. Read and record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present. Clear DTCs as necessary. Using scan tool, read PWR DOOR UNLOCK state. If scan tool displays state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, inspect all related wiring harnesses and connectors for good terminal contact or damage. Repair connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If okay, fault is not present at this time.

If scan tool displays PWR DOOR UNLOCK state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, replace passenger's PDL switch.   9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect CTM connector C2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 13 (Pink/Violet wire). If reading is more than 1.5 volts, repair short to voltage in Pink/Violet wire between CTM and both PDL switch connectors. If reading is 1.5 volts or less, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

All Doors Fail To Lock From Any Switch

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect passenger's Power Door Lock (PDL) switch harness connector. Except Dakota 2-door, measure resistance in Orange/Violet wire between passenger's PDL switch connector and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4. On Dakota 2-door, measure resistance in Light Green wire between passenger door lock switch and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4. On all models, if reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/Violet wire (Light Green wire on Dakota 2-door) between CTM and passenger's PDL switch connectors. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  2. On Dakota 4-door models, disconnect driver's PDL switch connectors. Measure resistance in Orange/Violet wire between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4. On Dakota 2-door, measure resistance in Light Green wire between passenger's PDL and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4. On all models, if reading is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange/Violet wire (Light Green wire on Dakota 2-door) between passenger's PDL switch and CTM connector terminal No. 4. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 100 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Restore any previously disconnected components and retest. Review symptoms present. Ensure symptoms still exists. Perform other appropriate testing procedures which may also apply for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. Replace CTM with a known-good unit and retest. Replace CTM as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

All Doors Fail To Lock From One Switch

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read and record any body related DTCs present. If scan tool displayed any Power Door Lock (PDL) system related DTCs, go to appropriate procedure for DTC message(s) displayed. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool does not display any PDL system related DTCs, go to next step.
  2. On Dakota 2-door models, go to next step. On Dakota 4-door and Durango models, go to step 5 .
  3. Actuate all PDL switches to verify which PDL is faulty. If driver's PDL switch locked and unlocked doors correctly, replace passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If driver's PDL did not actuate door lock correctly, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect driver's and passenger's PDL switch harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of PDL output circuit between driver's PDL switch connector Orange/Violet wire terminal and passenger's PDL switch connector Light Green/Black wire terminal. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's PDL switch. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/Violet wire between driver's PDL switch connector and in-line harness connector (located above passenger's door hinge) or repair open in Light Green/Black wire between in-line connector and passenger's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. On Dakota 4-door and Durango, actuate all PDL switches to verify which PDL switch is faulty. If driver's PDL switch locked and unlocked doors correctly, go to next step. If driver's door PDL switch does not lock and unlock doors correctly, go to step 7 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Disconnect passenger's PDL switch harness connector. Measure resistance of door lock switch sense circuit (Orange/Violet wire) between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4 and passenger's PDL switch connector. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace faulty passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Orange/Violet wire between CTM and passenger's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Disconnect driver's PDL switch harness connector. Measure resistance of door lock switch sense circuit (Orange/Violet wire) between driver's PDL switch connector and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/Violet wire between CTM and driver's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

All Doors Fail To Lock/Unlock From Any Switch

  1. On Dakota, check Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 13 (20-amp). On Durango, check JB fuse No. 13 (15-amp). On all models, ensure fuse is correct amperage and power supply to fuse is more than 10 volts. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 9 .
  2. On high-line models, go to step 5 . On base-line models, go to next step.
  3. On base-line models, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Red wire between power output terminal at JB fuse No. 13 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 18. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If readings is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire between JB and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 18. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. On base-line models, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector terminal No. 18 (Red wire). If reading is 5 ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Red wire between power output terminal at JB for fuse No. 13 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 18. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 5 ohms, go to step 7 .
  5. On high-line models, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Red wire between power output terminal at JB fuse No. 13 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 14. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If readings is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire between JB and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 14. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS section.   6. Using a DVOM connected to chassis ground, measure resistance at CTM connector terminal No. 1 (Red wire). If reading is 5 ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Red wire between power output terminal at JB for fuse No. 13 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 14. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Ensure ignition switch is in ON position. Disconnect all Power Door Lock (PDL) switch connectors. Check for continuity of Red wire between JB output cavity at fuse No. 13 and all PDL switch connectors. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, locate and repair open or short in Red wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Restore any previously disconnected components. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1 (Orange/Black wire). Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector terminal No. 9 (Pink/Black wire). If either reading is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in affected circuit. If both readings are ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect any suspect power door lock motor connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between power door lock motor and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If readings is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/Black wire between suspect door lock motor and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  10. Measure resistance of Pink/Violet wire between disconnected door lock motor connector terminal and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 9. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Violet wire between CTM and all door lock motors. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  11. Measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 3 (Black wire). If reading is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black wire between CTM connector and ground. Repair Black wire as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-3317-S06783932792000042500000) . If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  12. Disconnect CTM connector C1. On base-line models, measure resistance between ground and logic ground circuit at CTM connector C1 terminal No. 6 (Black wire). On high-line models, measure resistance between CTM connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Light Green wire on Dakota) or (Black/Tan wire on Durango). If any reading is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open wire between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 6 and ground. Repair related wiring as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-3317-S06783932792000042500000) . If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  13. Replace CTM with a known-good unit and retest. Replace CTM as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . All Doors Fail To Unlock From Any Switch

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect passenger's Power Door Lock (PDL) switch harness connector. Measure resistance of door unlock switch sense circuit between CTM and passenger's PDL switch connector. Except on Dakota 2-door, measure resistance in Pink/Violet wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 13 and passenger's PDL switch connector. On Dakota 2-door, measure resistance in Light Green wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 4 and passenger's PDL switch connector. On all models, if reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Violet wire (Light Green wire on Dakota 2-door). If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect both PDL switches. Except on Dakota 2-door, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 13 Pink/Violet wire. On Dakota 2-door, measure between ground and CTM C2 terminal No. 4 (Light Green wire). On all models, if reading is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in Pink/Violet wire (Light Green wire on Dakota 2-door). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 100 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Replace CTM with a known-good unit and retest. Replace CTM as necessary. If problem exists with know good CTM, repeat testing or go to related procedure for symptoms present.   4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect passenger's PDL switch harness connector. Measure resistance between Pink/Violet wire terminals of both PDL switch connectors. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Violet wire between driver's and passenger's PDL switch connectors.
  5. On Dakota 2-door, actuate all PDL switches to lock and unlock doors. If driver's PDL switch locked and unlocked doors correctly, go to next step. If driver's door PDL switch does not lock and unlock correctly, go to 7 .
  6. On all models, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect passenger's PDL switch harness connector. Measure resistance of Orange/White wire between passenger's PDL switch connector and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 13. If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace passenger's PDL switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/White wire between CTM and passenger's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C2. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect driver's PDL switch harness connector. Measure resistance of Pink/Violet wire between driver's PDL switch connector and passenger's PDL switch connector. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is less than 5 ohms, replace driver's PDL switch. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/Violet wire between both PDL switch connectors. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Automatic (Rolling) Door Locks Inoperative

  1. Using scan tool select CUSTOMER PREFERENCES and read ROLLING DOOR LOCK state. If scan tool displays ROLLING DOOR LOCKS ENABLED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display enabled message, attempt to enable automatic (rolling) door lock function and retest.
  2. Ensure all doors are closed. Using scan tool read DR DOOR AJAR SW state. If scan tool displays state as CLOSED, see appropriate procedure under door ajar system for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool display does not display state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  3. Ensure all doors are closed. Using scan tool read PASS DOOR AJAR SW state. If scan tool displays state as CLOSED, see appropriate procedure under door ajar system for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool does not display state as CLOSED, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM TEST and read PCM MONITOR state. If scan tool displays POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE ACTIVE ON BUS, go to next step. If scan tool reads otherwise, see appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.
  5. Using scan tool, read engine DTCs. If there are any related Throttle Position (TP) sensor or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) DTC's present, see appropriate procedure in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If no related DTCs are set, go to next step.
  6. Raise and properly support vehicle drive wheels. Ensure windows are down and doors are unlocked and all closed. Start engine and raise vehicle speed to 20 MPH. If doors automatically lock, system is okay at this time. If doors do not automatically lock, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Driver Door Fails To Lock From Any Switch

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove drive door unlock relay from fuse and relay box located next to Junction Block (JB). Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. Measure resistance between ground and driver door unlock relay control circuit at CTM connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Red/Black wire). If reading is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is more than 100 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Substitute a known-good door unlock relay. Restore any previously disconnected components. Retest system. If door locks operate as designed, replace door unlock relay. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If condition remains, go to next step.
  3. Replace CTM with a known-good unit and retest. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Restore any previously disconnected components. Replace CTM as necessary. If problem exists with know-good CTM, repeat testing or go to related procedure for other symptoms present. Driver Door Fails To Unlock From Any Switch

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove door unlock relay from relay and fuse center located next to Junction Block (JB). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Measure voltage between ground and fused battery supply cavity for door unlock relay terminal No. 86 in relay and fuse center. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S42874936072000042500000) table. If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If reading is 10 volts or less, locate and repair open in fused battery supply circuit (Red wire) for door unlock relay from JB fuse No. 13 (20-amp) on Dakota (15-amp on Durango).
  2. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Measure resistance of driver door unlock relay control circuit between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Red/Black wire) and cavity in relay and fuse center for driver door unlock relay terminal No. 85. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Using DVOM connected to ground, check for voltage at CTM harness connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Red/Black wire). If .5 volt or more exists, locate and repair short to voltage in driver door unlock relay control circuit (Red/Black wire). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is less than .5 volt, go to next step.
  4. Substitute a known-good driver door unlock relay. Restore any previously disconnected components. Retest system. If door locks operate as designed, replace driver door unlock relay. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If condition remains, go to next step.
  5. Replace CTM with a known-good unit. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . Restore any previously disconnected components. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Liftgate Fails To Lock/Unlock From Any Switch (Durango)

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inoperable liftgate door lock motor harness connector. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1 and liftgate door lock motor harness connector. If reading is more than 5 ohms, locate and repair open in Orange/Black wire between liftgate door lock motor driver and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  2. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Measure resistance of Pink/Black wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 9 and liftgate door lock motor harness connector. If reading is more than 5 ohms, locate and repair open in Pink/Black wire between liftgate door lock motor, CTM connector C2 terminal No. 9 and driver unlock relay in relay and fuse center. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or less, replace liftgate door lock motor.

One Door Fails To Lock/Unlock From Any Switch

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inoperable door lock motor harness connector. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 1 and inoperable door lock motor harness connector. If reading is more than 5 ohms, locate and repair open in Orange/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. NOTE: Door lock driver circuit (Orange/Black wire) and door unlock driver circuit (Pink/Black wire) wiring harness splice is located in wiring harness of driver's door sill, beneath driver's seat.
  2. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Measure resistance of door unlock driver circuit (Pink/Black wire) between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 9 and inoperable door lock motor harness connector. If reading is more than 5 ohms, locate and repair open in Pink/Black wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 5 ohms or less, replace inoperable door lock motor.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Problem

  1. Measure voltage of batteries in Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. If reading is 3 volts or more, go to next step. If reading is less than 3 volts, replace RKE transmitter batteries and retest. NOTE: The following procedure requires all RKE transmitters for vehicle are present. Always verify all RKE transmitters are operational after programming is completed.
  2. Using scan tool select THEFT ALARM, then VTSS, then MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAM RKE. Follow scan tool display prompts to program RKE transmitter(s) as necessary. Exit PROGRAM RKE. Activate door locks using RKE transmitter(s). If door locks respond to all RKE transmitter commands, system is okay. If door locks remain inoperative using one or all RKE transmitters, go to next step.
  3. Secure a known-good RKE transmitter. Repeat step 2 . If RKE transmitter commands actuate door locks, replace RKE transmitter(s) as necessary. If door locks remain inoperative, replace Central Timer Module (CTM). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Identifying VTSS Problems

  1. Using scan tool, select BODY SYSTEM then VTSS and read Central Timer Module (CTM) DTCs. If any VTSS type DTCs are displayed, perform appropriate procedure. See «VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM (VTSS) DTCS»(ref-3317-S10442329062000042500000) table. If scan tool display is normal, and no VTSS type DTCs are displayed, go to next step.   2. Select VTSS then MONITORS. If scan tool displays, OK TO RUN, NOT OK TO ARM or NO RESPONSE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE message has not been recorded more than 20 starts. Start engine more than 20 times and retest. If message does not change to OK TO ARM, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) . If scan tool displays any NO RESPONSE message, see COMMUNICATIONS in «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table for appropriate test procedure. If scan tool display is other than described, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, actuate horn, headlights and VTSS light to flash. If horn does not sound, go to next step. If headlights do not flash, go to step 6 . If VTSS light does not flash, go to step 9 . If all function properly, go to step 11 .
  4. Press horn button. If horn does not sound, go to appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. If horn sounds, go to next step.
  5. Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect CTM connector C2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Black/Red wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Black/Red wire between CTM and horn relay.
  6. Remove headlight relay from Junction Block (JB). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and headlight relay Violet wire terminal for relay terminal No. 86. If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Violet wire between battery source and headlight relay.
  7. Connect a test light between battery source and headlight relay connector terminal No. 86 (Red wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, replace headlight relay. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  8. Reinstall headlight relay. Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). Disconnect CTM connector C2. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 6 (Red wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Red wire between CTM and headlight relay.
  9. Using scan tool, actuate VTSS indicator light. If VTSS indicator light is not illuminated, see ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. If VTSS indicator light is illuminated, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 8 (Black/Orange wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Black/Orange wire between CTM and VTSS indicator light.
  11. Using scan tool, place VTSS in diagnostic mode and follow directions as prompted on scan tool display. If TURN KEY TO ACC POSITION is not displayed, go to step 23 . If a NO RESPONSE message is displayed after turning key to ACC position, or if TURN KEY TO ACC POSITION is displayed longer than 15 seconds, go to next step. If neither response is displayed, go to step 13 .
  12. Gain access to CTM connector C2. Ensure key is in accessory position. Using DVOM, backprobe between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue/White wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open Dark Blue/White wire between CTM and JB.
  13. Remove key from ignition. Wait 2 seconds after performing each of following actions. Open, then close both doors, wait 2 seconds. Operate PDL switch to lock position, then to unlock position, wait 2 seconds. Rotate key both directions in both doors, wait 2 seconds. Ensure each operation is successful. If any operation is unsuccessful, see appropriate POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS article. If all operations are successful, go to step 22 .   14. Ensure driver's door is closed. Using scan tool, read VTSS inputs/outputs door ajar state. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to «DRIVER'S DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT SHORTED»(ref-3317-S26411585942000042500000) under DOOR AJAR SYSTEM. If scan tool does not display DR DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to «DRIVER DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT OPEN»(ref-3317-S10440149552000042500000) under DOOR AJAR SYSTEM.
  15. Ensure passenger's door is closed. Using scan tool, read VTSS inputs/outputs door ajar state. If scan tool displays PASS DOOR AJAR SWITCH CLOSED, go to «PASSENGER DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT SHORTED»(ref-3317-S19464796482000042500000) under DOOR AJAR SYSTEM. If scan tool does not display passenger's door ajar state as CLOSED, go to «DRIVER DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT OPEN»(ref-3317-S10440149552000042500000) under DOOR AJAR SYSTEM.
  16. Using scan tool, monitor door disarm switch state. Disconnect driver's door disarm switch. Connect jumper wire between driver's door disarm switch connector terminals. If scan tool displays door disarm switch state CLOSED, replace driver's door disarm switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state CLOSED, go to next step.
  17. Disconnect jumper wire. Connect jumper wire between ground and driver's door disarm switch connector Light Green/Orange wire terminal. If scan tool displays door disarm switch state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state as CLOSED, repair open driver's door disarm switch ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire on Dakota) or (Black/Tan wire on Durango).
  18. Gain access Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Do not disconnect connector, and remove connector cover. Connect a jumper between ground and backprobe CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 (Light Green/Orange wire). If scan tool displays door disarm switch state CLOSED, repair open driver's door disarm switch sense circuit (Light Green/Orange wire). If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state CLOSED, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  19. Using scan tool, monitor door disarm switch state. Disconnect passenger's door disarm switch. Connect jumper wire between passenger's door disarm switch connector terminals. If scan tool displays door disarm switch state CLOSED, replace passenger's door disarm switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state CLOSED, go to next step.
  20. Disconnect jumper wire. Connect jumper wire between ground and passenger's door disarm switch connector (Light Green/Orange wire) terminal. If scan tool displays door disarm switch state as CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state CLOSED, repair open passenger's door disarm switch ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  21. Gain access Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Do not disconnect connector, and remove connector cover. Connect a jumper between ground and backprobe CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 (Light Green/Orange wire). If scan tool displays door disarm switch state CLOSED, repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. If scan tool does not display door disarm switch state CLOSED, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  22. Turn ignition switch to START position. If horn does not sound, go to next step. If horn sounds, go to step 24 .
  23. Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Disconnect CTM connector C1. On base-line models, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 4 (Dark Blue wire). On high-line models, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 8 (Dark Blue wire). On all models, if reading is more than 10 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open Dark Blue wire between CTM and fuse No. 6 (20-amp) of JB.
  24. Select VTSS, then MONITORS. If scan tool displays a NO RESPONSE message, see COMMUNICATIONS in «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool displays, OK TO RUN or NOT OK TO ARM, go to next step. If scan tool display is normal or does not display OK TO RUN, NOT OK TO ARM or any NO RESPONSE message, system is currently operating as designed.
  25. Start engine more than 20 times and retest. If message does not change to OK TO ARM, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S28507426042000082800000) . If message changes to OK TO ARM, system is operating as designed.

Door Disarm Switch Failure (Dakota)

  1. Insert key into driver's door key cylinder and turn key between neutral, lock and unlock several times. Repeat for passenger's door lock cylinder and liftgate door lock cylinder. If binding or sticking condition exists at any door key cylinder, repair or replace door key cylinder as necessary. If all door lock cylinder's are okay, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver's door key cylinder lock switch harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and door key cylinder switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black/Light Green wire suspect wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Disconnect passenger's door key cylinder lock switch harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and passenger's door key cylinder switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Gain access Central Timer Module (CTM). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C2. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 (Light Green/Orange wire). If reading is less than 1000 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire. If reading is 1000 ohms or more, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. With CTM harness connector C2, driver's and passenger's door key cylinder lock switch connectors disconnected, measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 and both door key cylinder harness connector. If both readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either reading is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Light Green/Orange wire. If reading is less than one volt, go to next step. If reading is one volt or more, repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire between CTM connector C2, driver's and passenger's door key lock cylinder switch connectors.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect CTM connector C2 connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Light Green/Orange wire. If reading is 8-11 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 8-11 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . NOTE: Two ignition switch keys are required for following test procedures.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect all previously disconnected components. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, monitor cylinder lock switch while turning driver's door lock cylinder switch from neutral to unlock positions. If reading changes from 2.5 volts in neutral position to one volt in unlocked position, go to next step. If reading does not change from about 3.4 volts in neutral to one volt in unlocked position, replace driver's door key cylinder lock switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  9. Monitor cylinder lock switch while turning passenger's door lock cylinder switch from neutral to unlock positions. If reading changes from about 3.4 volts in neutral position to one volt in unlocked position, go to next step. If reading does not change from about 3.4 volts in neutral to one volt in unlocked position, replace passenger's door key lock cylinder switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Fault is not present at this time. Retest system. If fault remains, see appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.

Any Key Cylinder Disarm Inoperative (Durango)

  1. Insert key into driver's door key cylinder and turn key between neutral, lock and unlock several times. Repeat for passenger's door lock cylinder and liftgate door lock cylinder. If binding or sticking condition exists at any door key cylinder, repair or replace door key cylinder as necessary. If all door lock cylinder's are okay, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect driver's door key cylinder lock switch harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and door key cylinder switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Disconnect liftgate door key cylinder lock switch harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and door key cylinder switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Disconnect passenger's door key cylinder lock switch harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and passenger's door key cylinder switch connector Black/Light Green wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Black/Light Green wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  5. Disconnect CTM harness connector C2. With all door key cylinder lock switch connectors disconnected, measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 and driver's door key cylinder harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 10 and liftgate door key cylinder harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  7. Measure resistance between ground and liftgate door key cylinder harness connector Light Green/Orange wire terminal. If resistance is less than 1000 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  8. Measure resistance of Light Green/Orange wire between CTM connector terminal No. 10 and passenger's door key cylinder harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  9. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Light Green/Orange wire. If reading is more than one volt, repair short to voltage in Light Green/Orange wire as necessary. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is less than one volt, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect CTM connector C2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Light Green/Orange wire. If reading is 8-11 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 8-11 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . NOTE: Two ignition switch keys are required for following test procedures.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect all previously disconnected components. Turn ignition switch to On position. Using scan tool, monitor cylinder lock switch while turning driver's door lock cylinder switch from neutral to unlock positions. If reading changes from 2.5 volts in neutral position to one volt in unlocked position, go to next step. If reading does not change from 2.5 volts in neutral to one volt in unlocked position, replace driver's door key cylinder lock switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  12. Monitor cylinder lock switch while turning liftgate door lock cylinder switch from neutral to unlock positions. If reading changes from 2.5 volts in neutral position to one volt in unlocked position, go to next step. If reading does not change from 2.5 volts in neutral to one volt in unlocked position, replace liftgate door key cylinder lock switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  13. Monitor cylinder lock switch while turning passenger's door lock cylinder switch from neutral to unlock positions. If reading changes from 2.5 volts in neutral position to one volt in unlocked position, go to next step. If reading does not change from 2.5 volts in neutral to one volt in unlocked position, replace passenger's door key lock cylinder switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  14. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Fault is not present at this time. Retest system. If fault remains, see appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.

Horn Fails To Sound With Alarm Tripped

  1. Press horn switch on steering wheel. If horns sound, go to next step. If horns do not sound, go to appropriate test procedure for horn system. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove horn relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C2. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between CTM connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Black/Red wire) and appropriate terminal of PDC for horn relay. If reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Red wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  3. Fault is not present at this time. Check circuit for intermittent failure. Repair intermittent faults as necessary. If Black/Red wire is okay, and condition remains, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEM

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector or battery.

Note. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST after repairs.

Wiper Park Switch Failure

  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, monitor WIPER PK SW state. Turn intermittent wipers to any speed setting, monitor WIPER PK SW state for 60 seconds. Scan tool display should switch from CLOSED when wipers are in parked position, and OPEN when wipers are in motion. If scan tool display reads CLOSED at all times, go to next step. If scan tool display does not read CLOSED all the time, go to step 6 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect windshield wiper motor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. While monitoring WIPER PK SW state on scan tool, connect a test light between battery voltage and Red/Gray wire of wiper motor harness connector. If WIPER PK SW state reads OPEN, replace wiper motor. If scan tool display does not read OPEN, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. On high-line models, measure resistance in Dark Green/Yellow wire between wiper motor connector and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 11. On base-line models, measure resistance in Dark Green/Yellow wire between wiper motor connector and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 17. On all models, if reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Yellow wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  4. Remove wiper relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Measure resistance in Dark Green/Yellow wire between appropriate wiper relay connector terminal in PDC and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 11 (No. 17 on base-line models). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Yellow wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Inspect wiring harness for damage and intermittent short to ground. Inspect connectors for damage and good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If wiring and connectors are okay, and fault condition remains, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  6. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, monitor WIPER PK SW state. Turn intermittent wipers to any speed setting, monitor WIPER PK SW state for 60 seconds. Scan tool display should switch from CLOSED when wipers are in parked position, and OPEN when wipers are in motion. If scan tool display reads CLOSED at all times, go to next step. If scan tool display does not read CLOSED all the time, go to step 10 .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn intermittent wipers off. Remove wiper relay from PDC. Measure voltage in Dark Green/Yellow wire between appropriate wiper relay connector terminal in PDC. If reading is one volt or more, repair short to voltage in Dark Green/Yellow wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is less than one volt, go to next step
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect windshield wiper motor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Monitor WIPER PK SW state on scan tool. If WIPER PK SW state reads CLOSED, replace wiper motor. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If scan tool display does not read CLOSED, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Inspect wiring harness for damage and intermittent short to ground. Inspect connectors for damage and good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If wiring and connectors are okay, and fault condition remains, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove wiper relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Measure resistance in Dark Green/Yellow wire between appropriate wiper relay connector terminal in PDC and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 11 (No. 17 on base-line models). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/Yellow wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and Dark Blue wire terminal of wiper motor harness connector. If reading is less then 10 volts, repair open in Dark Blue wire between wiper motor harness connector and CTM connector terminal No. 8 (No. 4 on base-line models). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or more, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between wiper motor connector Black wire terminal and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open or high resistance in Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

Intermittent Wipers Inoperative

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) 16-pin connector. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool display is not blank or have a CCD bus failure message, go to next step. If scan tool display is blank or has a CCD bus failure message, see COMMUNICATIONS in «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, monitor I_WIPER ENABLE state. Turn intermittent wipers to any speed setting. If scan tool displays I_WIPER ENABLE state voltage of more than 7.9 volts, go to next step. If reading is 7.9 volts or less, go to step 10 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove wiper relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). Connect a test light between battery voltage and wiper relay cavity for relay terminal No. 85 (Yellow/Dark Green wire) of PDC. While monitoring test light, actuate intermittent wiper operation. If test light flashes on and off, go to next step. If test light does not flash on and off, go to step 8 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance across terminals No. 85 and 86 of wiper relay. If resistance measures 70-80 ohms, go to next step. If resistance does not measure between 70-80 ohms, replace wiper relay. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . Retest intermittent wiper operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and PDC terminal cavity for wiper relay terminal No. 86 (Dark Blue wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Dark Blue wire between PDC and Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 6 (20-amp). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If fuse No. 6 (20-amp) is open, replace fuse.
  6. Measure voltage between ground and PDC terminal cavity for wiper relay terminal No. 87 (Dark Blue wire). If reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If reading is 10 volts or less, repair open in Dark Blue wire between PDC and Junction Block (JB) fuse No. 6 (20-amp). Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If fuse No. 6 (20-amp) is open, replace fuse.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect cavities of PDC for wiper relay terminals No. 30 and 87. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector terminal No. 7 (Red/Black wire). Measure voltage between ground and multifunction switch harness connector terminal and No. 8 (Red/Black wire). If either reading is less than 10 volts, repair open in wiper relay output circuit (Red/Black wire) between multifunction switch, Junction Block (JB) and PDC cavity for wiper relay terminal No. 30. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 10 volts or more, replace multifunction switch. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C1. On base-line models, measure resistance between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 3 (White wire) and multifunction switch connector terminal No. 1. On high-line models, measure resistance between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 12 (White wire) and multifunction switch connector terminal No. 1. On all models, if resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Inspect wiring harness for damage and intermittent short to ground. Inspect connectors for damage and good terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. If wiring and connectors are okay, and fault condition remains, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn wiper on to any intermittent wiper speed setting. On base-line models, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector terminal No. 14 (Dark Green/Red wire). On high-line models, measure voltage between ground and CTM connector terminal No. 3 (Dark Green/Red wire). On all models, if reading is more than 7.9 volts, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If reading is 7.9 volts or less, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. On base-line models, measure resistance of Dark Green/Red wire between multifunction switch and CTM connector terminal No. 14. On high-line models, measure resistance of Dark Green/Red wire between multifunction switch and CTM connector terminal No. 3. On all models, if reading is less than 5 ohms, replace multifunction switch. If reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/Red wire. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .

No Wipe After Washers Actuated

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect CTM connector C1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe CTM connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Brown wire) while actuating washer switch. If test light illuminates, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) . If test light does not illuminate repair open in Brown wire between multifunction switch and CTM connector terminal No. 10.

Wiper Speed Sensitive Feature Inoperative

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Raise and support vehicle. Turn wipers on to lowest intermittent position. Time interval between wipes. Spin rear wheels to more than 15 MPH. If interval between wipes decreased to approximately 18 seconds, system is currently operating as designed. If interval between wipes did not decrease to approximately 18 seconds, replace CTM. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
