PRETEST INSPECTION

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position before disconnecting any control module connector or battery. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Before proceeding with TROUBLE SHOOTING, SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM, or SYSTEM TESTS, the following precautions must be followed

  1. Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
  2. Always start at «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC)»(ref-3317-S34789037982000072100000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Starting with any other test may result in incorrect results.
  3. Only perform test steps indicated. It is NOT necessary to perform all steps in a test.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position before disconnecting any module, or before connecting components.
  5. Use extreme care when connecting or disconnecting components during testing to prevent accidental grounding or shorting.
  6. DO NOT use a test light in place of a DVOM, unless instructed to do so.
  7. Always disconnect scan tool after use or when disconnecting/charging battery.
  8. Always perform appropriate VERIFICATION TEST after repairs are made.

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

CAUTIONEnsure ignition switch is in OFF position prior to disconnecting any system control module or vehicle battery. Damage to control module(s) could occur, if power is directly removed from some control modules.

Note. Self-diagnostic procedures are written specifically for use with Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) scan tool. Other generic scan tools can be used, but may have limited functions.

RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC)

  1. Generic Scan Tool - Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions and procedures. Scan tools may not have ability to measure voltage, resistance or continuity. When instructed, use of an additional DVOM may be required.
  2. DRBIII(R) Scan Tool - DRBIII(R) scan tool is grounded through Data Link Connector (DLC) connector. Only one volt/ohmmeter test lead is required when instructed by testing to measure voltage or resistance on specified circuit using DRBIII(R). DRBIII(R) scan tool volt/ohmmeter mode should only be used when system tests require use of this option or when prompted by DRBIII(R) scan tool. NOTE: Refer to DRBIII(R) scan tool manufacturer's instructions to retrieve and clear fault messages and when performing other DRBIII(R) scan tool functions.
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) 16-pin connector. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(ref-3317-S16495408522000042500000) . Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool LEDs do not illuminate and no sound emitted, check for poor cable connections. Check for a minimum of 11 volts at DLC connector terminal No. 16, and repair power supply as necessary. If scan tool display remains blank, consult scan tool manufacturer's manual. If scan tool LEDs illuminate and sound is emitted, continue with fault message and code retrieval.
  4. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS TEST. Scan tool will perform a CCD bus test. If scan tool displays BUS OPERATIONAL, go to next step. If scan tool displays any message except BUS OPERATIONAL, go to appropriate procedure for message displayed. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If scan tool displays any CCD bus fault message or any NO RESPONSE message, it must diagnosed before proceeding with any other diagnostics.
  5. Using scan tool, select READ DTCs. If any Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) message is present, go to appropriate procedures for DTC message(s) displayed. See «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) table. If no DTC messages are present, identify customer complaint and diagnose by symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. When diagnosing a system with many apparent problems, a sequence of tests may be required. After repairs, ensure all problems or failures have been corrected. Perform appropriate VERIFICATION TEST.

SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY

Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) Self-Test

Note. For more information, see ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article.

  1. Enter MIC Self-Test - With ignition off, press and hold trip odometer reset button of Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) and turn ignition switch to ON position. Continue to hold reset button until odometer window displays CHEC (about 10 seconds). Release button. System will display MIC Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) in the odometer window. If MIC DTCs are displayed in odometer window, see appropriate procedure for message displayed. See «MIC SELF-TEST DTC INDEX»(ref-3317-S35126104952000042500000) table. For symptoms not listed, see «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) . If no DTC is displayed, MIC will automatically begin to check odometer. Go to next step.   2. Odometer Check - Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) will begin odometer segment test. First all segments will be illuminated, then each segment in sequence. If any segment does not illuminate, repeat test to confirm. Replace MIC if any segment does not illuminate. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - DAKOTA & DURANGO article. When ODOMETER CHECK is complete, BULB CHECK will start.
  3. Bulb Check - All CCD bus warning indicator lights will be illuminated during bulb check. If all lights illuminate, go to GAUGE CHECK. If any CCD bus driven warning indicator light does not illuminate during bulb check, turn ignition switch to OFF position. See «ANY CCD BUS CLUSTER LIGHT INOPERATIVE»(ref-3317-S21516838622000042500000) . Remove Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) and check bulbs and bulb holders. Ensure bulb holders are properly installed. If bulbs and bulb holders are okay, replace MIC. When bulb check is complete, GAUGE CHECK will start.
  4. Gauge Check - Gauge check is an actuator test of instrument panel gauges. Each gauge needle should stop at a series of predetermined calibration points, then return to relaxed position. See «GAUGE CHECK POINTS»(ref-3317-S23613840532000042500000) table. If any gauge does not perform as specified, go to «ONE GAUGE NOT OPERATING PROPERLY»(ref-3317-S04967700532000042500000) . If necessary, remove MIC and inspect all connections between printed circuit board and terminals of suspect gauge, Repair connectors as necessary. Note. Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) will automatically exit self-test when test diagnostics are completed. Repeat self-test steps as necessary.

Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) Self-Test

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Simultaneously depress and hold STEP button and US/METRIC button. Turn ignition switch to ON position, while continuing to hold both buttons. When all Vacuum Florescent Display (VFD) segments are illuminated, release buttons and view VFD display. If segments of VFD illuminate, go to next step. If any VFD display segment does not illuminate, replace CMTC module. Perform «BODY VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-3317-S35791098922000042500000) .
  2. Self-test for Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) systems will end when one of 2 message is display on VFD, either FAIL or CCD. If no message is displayed, diagnostics must be done with Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) multiplex system Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII(R)) with the appropriate system cartridge. If either FAIL or CCD message is displayed, go to next step.
  3. If FAIL message is displayed, replace Compass Mini Trip Computer (CMTC) module. If CCD is displayed, go to appropriate procedure for messages displayed or symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If system completes self-test, and no problem is detected, or if ignition switch is turned to OFF position during test, CMTC will automatically return to normal operation.

Air Bag Verification Test

  1. Connect all previously disconnected components, except negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position and reconnect negative battery cable. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, erase the stored DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 15 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
  2. Wait one minute. Using scan tool, read active codes. If there are no active codes present, read stored codes present. If equipped with passenger's side air bag, read DTCs with passenger's side air bag on/off switch in either position, then check for DTCs with switch in other position.
  3. If scan tool shows any stored codes, see «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) and «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) tables. If any DTC set during road test, refer to symptom list for further testing. If DTCs did not set during road test, repair is complete.

Body Verification Test

  1. Reconnect all previously disconnected components and connectors. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If Central Timer Module (CTM) was replaced, turn ignition switch to ON position, then wait 15-30 seconds. If vehicle is equipped with Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS), use scan tool to enable VTSS. Use scan tool to program any other options as necessary. If Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)/Central Timer Module (CTM) was replaced, program all RKE transmitters and program other options as necessary.
  2. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, it must be programmed with correct VIN and odometer. If PCM is replaced and is not programmed, DTC will be stored in Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) module. If DTCs are set in ACM and CAB, enter correct VIN and odometer in PCM. Erase codes in ACM and CAB modules. In addition, if vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS), secret key data must be updated to enable vehicle to start.
  3. If vehicle is equipped with SKIS, obtain secret key data PIN code for vehicle from owner. Connect scan tool to DLC. Go to THEFT ALARM, then SKIM, then MISC. Place SKIM in secured access mode using secret key PIN code for vehicle. Select UPDATE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will transfer from SKIM to PCM.
  4. If Central Timer Module (CTM) was replaced, turn ignition switch to ON position for 15 seconds to learn VIN. If vehicle is equipped with Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS), use scan tool to enable VTSS. Program customer preference options as necessary. Ensure all doors, hood, liftgate are closed. Open driver's door and remove keys from ignition switch with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transponder. Lock all door with RKE transponder. Close driver's door. If VTSS indicator lamp flashes, VTSS is operational. If VTSS light does not flash, diagnose fault. See «IDENTIFYING VTSS PROBLEMS»(ref-3317-S39769556812000042500000) .
  5. Ensure all accessories are turned off. Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read and record DTCs from ALL modules. Erase all DTCs using scan tool. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, and wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Operate system that was malfunctioning.
  6. If any DTCs or fault messages are present, refer to appropriate procedure for message displayed or symptoms present. See «SYMPTOM INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If system is operating correctly, no DTC is present, and customer's complaint cannot be duplicated, repair is complete.

Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) Verification Test

Note. Failure to properly program a replacement Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module will result in a blinking ABS warning indicator.

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect all previously disconnected components. Check connectors, clean and repair connectors as necessary. Using scan tool, check tire size and rear axle ratio. If scan tool displays tire size and axle ratio, select MISC, then MODULE REPLACEMENT. If scan tool does not display tire size and axle ratio, select MISC, then SET PINION FACTOR. Inspect rear tires for tire size printed on tire. If tire0 size is not listed on scan tool, install correct size tire to vehicle. Determine rear axle type used on vehicle (not the axle ratio). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, program correct tire size and axle ratio. Road test vehicle at speeds greater than 30 MPH, for at least 2 minutes. Check for any DTC. If any DTC set during road test, refer to symptom list for further testing. See «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) and «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) tables. If DTCs did not set during road test, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect any previously disconnected components and connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, erase DTCs, then read DTCs. If any DTCs are present, or recurring symptom, refer to appropriate test for symptoms present. See «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) and «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) tables. If there are no new DTC. Road test vehicle for at least 5 minutes, performing several anti-lock braking stops. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If any DTCs are present, return to symptom list for recurring symptom. See «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) and «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) tables. If there is no new DTC and customer complaint cannot be duplicated, testing is complete.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Verification Test

  1. Inspect vehicle to ensure that all engine components are properly installed and connected. Reconnect all previously disconnected components and connectors. If this test is being performed after a NO TROUBLE CODE repair, perform this step only. Check and see if initial symptoms still exist. If symptoms no longer exist, repair is complete. If initial symptom, or another symptom exists, repair by symptoms present. See «DTC MESSAGE INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S30205649732000072400000) and «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) tables. If there is no new DTC, and customer complaint cannot be duplicated, testing is complete.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), erase all DTCs and reset all values. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, perform this entire step. If PCM was not replaced, go to next step. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, it must be programmed with correct VIN and odometer. If PCM is replaced and is not programmed, DTC will be stored in Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) module. If DTCs are set in ACM and CAB, enter correct VIN and odometer in PCM. Erase codes in ACM and CAB modules. In addition, if vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS), secret key data must be updated to enable vehicle to start. If vehicle is equipped with SKIS, obtain secret key data PIN code for vehicle from owner. Connect scan tool to DLC. Go to THEFT ALARM, then SKIM, then MISC. Place SKIM in secured access mode using secret key PIN code for vehicle. Select UPDATE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will transfer from SKIM to PCM.
  3. Road test vehicle. If this test is for an A/C related DTC, ensure the A/C system is operating during this test procedure. Drive vehicle for more than 5 minutes, at speeds of 40 MPH or more. Ensure transmission shifts properly through all gears. At some point, stop vehicle, turn engine off for at least 10 seconds. When finished with test drive, read DTCs present. If a DTC has set, return to symptoms list and perform appropriate procedure. See «SYMPTOMS INDEX DIRECTORY»(ref-3317-S12923901372000042500000) table. If DTC or symptom does not return, repair is complete.
