Transfer Case
Check transfer case fluid level when performing other underhood services. Under normal or severe service conditions, change transfer case fluid at specified interval. See TRANSFER CASE SERVICE INTERVALS table. Severe service conditions are conditions such as long periods of engine idling, trailer towing, extreme temperatures, off-highway operation, snow removal, or operating in dusty conditions.

TRANSFER CASE SERVICE INTERVALS
- Drive vehicle until engine and transmission are at normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level surface. Apply parking brake.
- With engine idling, shift transmission through all gear ranges, ending in Neutral. Check fluid level. Fluid level should be between MIN and MAX area on dipstick with transmission fluid temperature at 180°F (82°C). Transmission fluid temperature can be checked on models equipped with 4-speed transmissions using scan tool. Follow scan tool manufacturers instructions. Add appropriate type of fluid as necessary. Park vehicle on level surface. Remove transfer case fill plug from rear of transfer case. Fluid level should be even with bottom of fill hole. Add appropriate type of fluid as necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS . Install and tighten transfer case fill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
On 2000 models, manufacturer recommends Mopar(R) ATF+3, Type 7176 fluid. On 2001 models, manufacturer recommends Mopar(R) ATF+4, Type 9602 fluid for all transfer cases except NV247. On NV247, manufacturer recommends Mopar(R) transfer case lubricant (05016796).
- Ensure vehicle is parked on level surface. Remove transfer case drain plug. Transfer case drain plug is located on right rear corner of transfer case. Allow fluid to drain.
- Reinstall transfer case drain plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove transfer case fill plug. Transfer case fill plug is located on rear of transfer case, below identification tag.
- Fill transfer case with appropriate fluid until level is even with bottom of fill hole. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS . Install and tighten transfer case fill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
OIL COOLER FLOW CHECK
- With transmission filled to proper fluid level, disconnect oil cooler return line from transmission (rear cooler line). (Scheme 171) Place container under oil cooler return line.
- Apply parking brake. Start engine and allow to idle. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Check fluid flow from oil cooler return line.
- If fluid flow is consistent and takes 20 seconds or less to obtain one quart, oil pump volume and oil cooler flow are okay. If fluid flow is intermittent or takes more than 20 seconds to obtain one quart, disconnect oil cooler inlet line. Refill transmission to proper level and recheck flow.
- If fluid flow is intermittent or takes more than 20 seconds to obtain one quart, check line pressure. For 2000 models, see HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS under PERFORMANCE TESTS in appropriate OVERHAUL article. For 2001 models, see HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS under PERFORMANCE TESTS in appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. If fluid flow is consistent and takes 20 seconds or less to obtain one quart, replace oil cooler. Reconnect oil cooler lines. Fill transmission with appropriate ATF. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS.

Note. Various components may be serviced without transaxle/transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Dakota & Durango (2000)
- Raise and support vehicle. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Release gearshift cable adjuster lock. Cable adjuster lock is located under power brake booster.
- Disconnect gearshift cable from manual lever on transmission. Ensure transmission remains in Park by rotating manual lever fully toward rear of vehicle to park detent.
- Verify parking sprag on transmission is engaged by attempting to rotate driveshaft. Install gearshift cable on manual lever. Lock gearshift cable in place by pressing gearshift cable adjuster lock downward until snapped into place.
- To verify proper adjustment, ensure engine starts only with transmission in Park and Neutral. If engine starts with transmission in any other gear range except Park or Neutral, gearshift cable may be improperly adjusted or park/neutral position switch may be faulty.
Dakota, Durango (2001) & Ram Van/Wagon
- Raise and support vehicle. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Unsnap gearshift cable from ball at manual lever on transmission. (Scheme 172)
- Ensure transmission remains in Park by rotating manual lever fully toward rear of vehicle to park detent. Release cable lock tab at column end of gearshift cable to unlock gearshift cable. (Scheme 173) Snap gearshift cable back on ball at manual lever. Press cable lock tab inward to secure gearshift cable.
- To verify proper adjustment, ensure engine starts only with transmission in Park and Neutral. Gearshift lever should not move from "P" position when ignition switch is in LOCK position. Gearshift lever should move from "P" position when ignition switch is in any position except LOCK position.

Grand Cherokee
- Shift transmission into Park. Remove gearshift lever bezel and floor console as necessary for access to shift cable adjustment screw. (Scheme 174) Loosen shift cable adjustment screw. (Scheme 175) Adjustment screw is located in slot at end of shift cable.
- Raise and support vehicle. Unsnap shift cable eyelet from transmission control lever. Move control lever fully rearward. Ensure transmission is in Park by attempting to rotate driveshaft. Snap cable eyelet onto transmission control lever. Lower vehicle.
- Tighten shift cable adjustment screw to 62 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Verify adjustment by attempting to start engine in Park and Neutral. Adjustment is okay if engine starts in Park and Neutral, and does not start in any other gear position. Install gearshift lever bezel and floor console.

KICKDOWN BAND
- Raise and support vehicle. Loosen kickdown band adjusting screw lock nut while preventing adjusting screw from rotating. Kickdown band adjusting screw is located on side of transmission, near manual lever shaft. (Scheme 176)
- Back off kickdown band adjusting screw lock nut 3-5 turns. Ensure kickdown band adjusting screw rotates freely in transmission case.
- Tighten kickdown band adjusting screw to 72 INCH lbs. (8.1 N.m). Back off kickdown band adjusting screw the specified amount of turns. See KICKDOWN BAND ADJUSTMENT table.
- Hold kickdown band adjusting screw in this position and tighten kickdown band adjusting screw lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

KICKDOWN BAND ADJUSTMENT

LOW-REVERSE BAND
- Oil pan must be removed from transmission to adjust low-reverse band. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen oil pan bolts. Allow fluid to drain. Remove oil pan bolts, oil pan and gasket.
- Loosen low-reverse band adjusting screw lock nut while preventing adjusting screw from rotating. Low-reverse band adjusting screw and lock nut are located inside transmission, near low-reverse band. (Scheme 177)
- Back off low-reverse band adjusting screw lock nut 5-6 turns. Ensure low-reverse band adjusting screw rotates freely in band lever.
- Tighten low-reverse band adjusting screw to 72 INCH lbs. (8.1 N.m). Back off low-reverse band adjusting screw the specified amount of turns. See LOW-REVERSE BAND ADJUSTMENT table. Hold low-reverse band adjusting screw and tighten low-reverse band adjusting screw lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
- Clean oil pan, magnet and all sealing surfaces. Using NEW gasket, install oil pan. Install and tighten oil pan bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
- Add appropriate fluid until level is at MIN mark on dipstick. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS. Start engine and allow it to idle. With brakes applied, shift transmission through all gear ranges and return to Neutral.
- Add additional fluid to bring level to MIN mark on dipstick. Recheck fluid level with transmission at normal operating temperature. Adjust fluid level to MAX mark on dipstick. DO NOT overfill.

LOW-REVERSE BAND ADJUSTMENT

Note. Vehicles equipped with NV233 and NV244 transfer cases are shifted electronically. They require no mechanical adjustments.
- Place transfer case shift lever in 2WD (NV231) or 4WD (NV242) position and secure with wire or elastic cord. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen lock bolt at adjusting swivel on shift rod. (Scheme 178) Ensure shift rod slides freely in adjusting swivel. If shift rod fails to slide freely in adjusting swivel, lubricate shift rod as necessary.
- Ensure shift lever on transfer case remains in 2WD (NV231) or 4WD (NV242) position. Slide adjusting swivel forward until shift lever touches shift gate crossover. Slide adjusting swivel slightly rearward to provide.118-.197" (3.00-5.00 mm) gap between shift lever and shift gate.
- Center pin on end of adjusting swivel in hole on shift arm. Tighten lock bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. With all wheels off the floor, start engine and shift transfer case through all ranges to ensure proper operation.

Ram Pickup
- Place transfer case shift lever in 2H position and secure with wire or elastic cord. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen lock bolt at adjusting swivel on shift rod. (Scheme 178) Ensure shift rod slides freely in adjusting swivel. If shift rod fails to slide freely in adjusting swivel, lubricate shift rod as necessary.
- Ensure shift lever on transfer case remains in 2H position. 2H position on transfer case shift arm is second position from full-forward position. Position shift lever inside cab so distance from instrument panel to 2H position dot in shift lever insert is 5.75" (146.0 mm). Ensure measurement is made parallel to floor.
- Tighten lock bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. With all wheels off the floor, start engine and shift transfer case through all ranges to ensure proper operation.
Cab & Chassis, & Ram Pickup
- Raise and support vehicle. Inspect shift linkage for worn components. Replace any damaged or worn grommets or shift linkage components before adjusting.
- Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Loosen lock bolt on adjusting swivel. (Scheme 179) Ensure shift rod slides freely in adjusting swivel. If shift rod fails to slide freely in adjusting swivel, lubricate shift rod as necessary.
- Rotate manual lever on transmission fully toward rear of vehicle to park detent. Position adjusting swivel so it is centered in grommet on torque shaft arm. (Scheme 179) Tighten lock bolt on adjusting swivel. Ensure engine starts only with transmission in Park and Neutral. If engine starts with transmission in any other gear ranges except Park and Neutral, shift linkage adjustment is incorrect or PNP switch is faulty.

THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
- Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position and ignition is off. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect throttle valve cable from stud on throttle lever at throttle body.
- Ensure throttle lever on throttle body is in idle position and throttle valve lever on transmission is in idle (fully forward) position.
- Using small screwdriver, remove locking clip from throttle valve cable. Apply enough tension on cable to remove any slack. Center end of throttle valve cable with stud on throttle lever at throttle body within.039" (1.0 mm). (Scheme 180) Install locking clip. Install throttle valve cable on throttle lever.
- To verify proper adjustment, ensure throttle valve lever on throttle body and throttle lever on transmission move simultaneously when throttle is depressed. If both levers do not move simultaneously, readjust throttle valve cable.

OVERDRIVE SWITCH
Note. Removal and installation information for floor shift models is not available from manufacturer.
