MODEL IDENTIFICATION

Note. For scheduled maintenance intervals and the related fluid capacities, fluid specifications and labor times for major service intervals, see SCHEDULED SERVICES article in this section. Warranty information and specifications for fluid capacities, lubrication specifications, wheel and tire size, and battery type are covered in this article.

VIN LOCATION

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on the left side of the dash panel at the base of the windshield. The VIN chart explains the code characters.

SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS

Note. Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under ANY (one or more) of these conditions

Service is recommended at mileage intervals based on vehicle operation. Service schedules are based on the following primary operating conditions

Severe Service

  1. Sustained High Speed Driving In Hot Weather
  2. Stop-And-Go Driving In Dusty Conditions
  3. Extensive Idling
  4. Frequent Short Trips

Normal Service

  1. Driven More Than 10 Miles Daily
  2. No Severe Service Operating Conditions

CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT

CAUTIONFailure to replace a faulty camshaft timing belt may result in serious engine damage.

The condition of camshaft drive belts should always be checked on vehicles which have more than 50,000 miles. Although some manufacturers do not recommend belt replacement at a specified mileage, others require it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact. These designs are often called "Free Wheeling".

Many manufacturers changed their maintenance and warranty schedules in the mid-1980's to reflect timing belt inspection and/or replacement at 50,000-60,000 miles. Most service interval schedules in this manual reflect these changes.

Belts or components should be inspected and replaced if any of the following conditions exist

  1. Cracks Or Tears In Belt Surface
  2. Missing, Damaged, Cracked Or Rounded Teeth
  3. Oil Contamination
  4. Damaged Or Faulty Tensioners
  5. Incorrect Tension Adjustment

Replace 2.2L & 2.5L engine camshaft timing belt at 90,000 miles. Replace 3.0L engine camshaft timing belt at 60,000 miles.

SERVICE LABOR TIMES

Note. For 1990 and newer vehicles, labor times are provided, where available, within appropriate SERVICE INTERVAL table in SCHEDULED SERVICES article.

TIRE INFLATION

The tire specification decal is attached to left front door latch pillar. Inflation pressure listed on decal is always "cold inflation pressure". Cold inflation pressure must never exceed maximum values molded into tire side wall.

Note. Cold inflation pressure is defined as pressure after vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours without being driven.

WHEEL TIGHTENING

On 1984 models, tighten wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m). On all other models, tighten wheel nuts to 95 ft. lbs. (129 N.m).

BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with computers may lose memory data. When battery power is restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles. These vehicles may require a relearn procedure. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (AIR BAG)

Note. See the AIR BAGS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT Section.

Modifications or improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), can adversely affect system performance. DO NOT cover, obstruct or change the steering wheel horn pad in any way, as such action could cause improper function of the system. Use only plain water when cleaning the horn pad. Solvents or cleaners could adversely affect the air bag cover and cause improper deployment of the system.

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all warnings and service precautions. See appropriate AIR BAGS article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
CAUTIONDisconnect negative battery cable before servicing any air bag system, steering column or passenger side dash component. After any repair, turn ignition key to the ON position from passenger's side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag inflation

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM

The anti-lock brake system contains electronic equipment that can be susceptible to interference caused by improperly installed or high output radio transmitting equipment. Since this interference could cause the possible loss of the anti-lock braking capability, such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.

On models equipped with anti-lock brake systems, ALWAYS observe the following cautions

  1. DO NOT attempt to bleed hydraulic system without first referring to the appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES Section.
  2. DO NOT mix tire sizes. As long as tires remain close to the original diameter, increasing the width is acceptable. Rolling diameter must be identical for all 4 tires. Some manufacturers recommend tires of the same brand, style and type. Failure to follow this precaution may cause inaccurate wheel speed readings.
  3. Use ONLY recommended brake fluids. DO NOT use silicone brake fluids in an ABS-equipped vehicle.

BATTERY

If battery shows any signs of freezing, leaking, loose posts or low electrolyte level, DO NOT use load tester to test battery. An explosive condition could result.

BATTERY WARNING

REPLACING BLOWN FUSES

Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous electrical system overload.

BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR

Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning that brake pads need replacement.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Continued operation of vehicle with a severe malfunction could cause converter to overheat, resulting in possible damage to converter and vehicle.

Any modification to the exhaust system on turbo models, which reduces exhaust backpressure, will lead to lean fuel mixtures and excessive spark advance. This could cause serious engine damage.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESD) PARTS

WARNINGMany solid state electrical components can be damaged by static electricity (ESD). Some will display a warning label, but many will not. Discharge personal static electricity by touching a metal ground point on the vehicle prior to servicing any ESD sensitive component.

ENGINE OIL

CAUTIONNever use non-detergent or straight mineral oil.

FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE

WARNINGRelieve fuel system pressure prior to servicing any fuel system component (fuel injection models).

HALOGEN BULBS

WARNINGHalogen bulbs contain pressurized gas which may explode if overheated. DO NOT touch glass portion of bulb with bare hands. Eye protection should be worn when handling or working around halogen bulbs.

RADIATOR CAP

CAUTIONAlways disconnect the fan motor when working near the radiator fan. The fan is temperature controlled and could start at any time even when the ignition key is in the OFF position. DO NOT loosen or remove radiator cap when cooling system is hot.

RADIATOR FAN

WARNINGKeep hands away from radiator fan. Fan is controlled by a thermostatic switch which may come on or run for up to 15 minutes even after engine is turned off.

TURBOCHARGED MODELS

CAUTIONDo not race engine immediately after starting. When stopping engine, allow engine to idle for approximately 60 seconds before shutting it off. Failure to do so may cause turbocharger damage due to lack of oil flowing to the turbocharger bearings.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

CAUTIONDue to the different warranties offered in various regions and the variety of after-market extended warranties available, please refer to the warranty package that came with the vehicle to verify all warranty options.

BASIC NEW CAR LIMITED WARRANTY

This basic warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair or adjust any item (except tires) that have been proven defective in material, workmanship or factory preparation under normal vehicle operation.

  1. 1984-87 Everything is covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
  2. 1988-93 Everything is covered for 2 years or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

POWER TRAIN WARRANTY

Warranty begins on warranty start date, and there is no deductible fee. On 1989 vehicles, warranty period is 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. On 1990-92 vehicles, warranty period is 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The following components are covered under this warranty.

  1. Engine Cylinder block and all internal parts, cylinder head assemblies, core plugs, valve covers, oil pan, timing gear drive belts and/or chains and cover, oil pump, intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump and housing, turbocharger housings and internal parts, turbocharger wastegate actuator, seals and gaskets.
  2. Transmission Case and all internal parts, oil pan, torque converter with starter ring gear, flexplate, bellhousing, flywheel, seals and gaskets.
  3. FWD Transaxle electronic controller, transaxle case and all internal parts, oil pan and differential cover, torque converter and drive plate with starter ring gear, bellhousing, flywheel, drive shaft assemblies, universal joints, housing and boots, seals and gaskets.
  4. Drive Shaft & Drive Axles Drive shaft assemblies (front and rear), universal joints and yokes, drive shaft center bearings, drive axle housing and all internal parts, disconnect housing assembly, axle shafts and bearings, seals and gaskets.

OWNER'S CHOICE COVERAGE

Beginning in 1992, Chrysler offers a choice of coverage for new car. At the time of purchase, owner must choose either (1) the 12-month/12,000-mile Basic New Car Limited Warranty with a 7-year/70,000-mile Powertrain Warranty, or (2) a 36-month/36,000-mile Basic New Car Limited Warranty covering any items that are proven defective in material, workmanship or factory preparation.

Under the 36-month/36,000-mile warranty, the following items are only warranted for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

  1. Light Bulbs
  2. Seat Covers And Carpets
  3. Brakes (Rotors, Pads, Linings And Drums)
  4. Fuses
  5. Wiper Blades
  6. Adjustments
  7. Battery
  8. Drive Belts

CORROSION WARRANTY

Warranty begins on the date vehicle is delivered or put in use, whichever occurs first. Warranty covers rust-through damage to any sheet metal panel due to corrosion. Warranty period for different year models is as follows.

  1. 1987 Warranty period is 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
  2. 1988-90 Warranty period is 5 years with unlimited mileage.
  3. 1991-93 Sheet metal panels have a 36-month/unlimited mileage corrosion coverage. Outer-body sheet metal panels are covered for 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

EMISSION SYSTEM "DEFECT" & "PERFORMANCE" WARRANTIES

Under the Defect Warranty, Chrysler warrants that vehicle is free from defects in material and workmanship, which would cause it to fail to conform with Federal standards for emission control system set at the time vehicle was built.

The Performance Warranty covers all costs of repairing or adjusting any components or parts necessary for vehicle to pass a Federal-approved state or local emissions test.

The following is a partial list of primary components that affect vehicle emissions. These components are covered by both warranties. Other emission control parts related to these components are covered by the Performance Warranty, where applicable. If another part fails due to the failure of one of these primary components, both parts are covered. Warranties begin on warranty start date and last for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

  1. Electronic Fuel Injection System
  2. Air Cleaner Vapor Containment Door System
  3. Electronic Spark Control
  4. Electronic Control Module
  5. Vapor Storage Canister And Controls
  6. Deceleration Throttle Control
  7. Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve And Control System
  8. Air Pump, Belt And Pulley
  9. Air Injection Controls
  10. Intake Manifold
  11. PCV Valve
  12. Catalytic Converter
  13. Vacuum Hoses, Clamps, Fittings And Tubing
  14. Vacuum, Temperature, Altitude, Speed And Time-Sensitive Valves

Fusible links will melt when excessive current flows through the electrical systems without passing through the fuses.
