Repair
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Electronic Shift Module (ESM) / Gear Shift Module (GSM) terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the Shift Lever Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE in appropriate Transmission Control Module (TCM) Electrical Diagnostics article .

Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the Shifter Lever Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE in appropriate Transmission Control Module (TCM) Electrical Diagnostics article.
- CHECK IF DTC IS CURRENT NOTE: Before checking for DTCs, ensure ribbon cable is connected between PRNDL display at shifter and the ESM shifter module. This DTC will set if the ribbon cable is not properly connected. NOTE: Before erasing any DTCs, record all information pertaining to the DTC. With the scan tool, clear ESM DTCs. Using the Environmental Data previously recorded, drive the vehicle and try to duplicate the condition in which the DTC set. Does the DTC reset? Yes Go To 2 No Go To 4
- CHECK FOR TCM DTCS Using the scan tool, check for any TCM stored or pending DTCs. Were there any stored or pending TCM Transmission Range Sensor DTC(s)? Yes Refer to the «DTC INDEX»(ref-646339) article and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure. No Go To 3
- CHECK THE ESM WITH THE SCAN TOOL With the scan tool, under ESM, check the Shift Lever Indication. Does the Shift Lever Indication reading indicate SNA? Yes Check the TCM harness connectors at the TCM. NOTE: Poor or improper connection at the TCM can cause this DTC to set. Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Pay particular attention to all power, ground and CAN Bus circuits. Clear DTC(s) and verify proper operation. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE in appropriate Transmission Control Module (TCM) Electrical Diagnostics article . No Using the schematics as a guide, check the Gear Shift / Electronic Shifter Control Module terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the Shift Lever Assembly. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit. Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits. Where any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE in appropriate Transmission Control Module (TCM) Electrical Diagnostics article . No Test Complete.
- CHECK IF DTC IS CURRENT NOTE: Before erasing any DTCs, record all information pertaining to the DTC. With the scan tool, clear ESM DTCs. Yes Check the TCM harness connectors at the TCM. NOTE: Poor or improper connection at the TCM can cause this DTC to set. Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Pay particular attention to all power, ground and CAN Bus circuits. Clear DTC(s) and verify proper operation. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE in appropriate Transmission Control Module (TCM) Electrical Diagnostics article . CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, select view DTCs. Does the scan tool display this DTC as active? Yes Refer to the «DTC INDEX»(ref-646339) article and perform the U0002-00-CAN C BUS OFF PERFORMANCE diagnostic procedure. No Refer to «STORED LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS»(ref-646292-S31636716672014072800000) and perform the Stored Lost Communication DTCs diagnostic procedure.
VERIFY THE DTC IS ACTIVE
Note. Make sure the IOD fuse is installed and the battery is fully charged before proceeding.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read the active DTCs. Is the DTC active at this time? Yes Perform the U0100-87-Lost Communication with ECM/PCM diagnostic procedure. Refer to the «DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX»(ref-646299-S14228489272014072800000) . No Perform the Stored Lost Communication DTCs diagnostic procedure. Refer to «STORED LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS»(ref-646292-S31636716672014072800000) .
VERIFY DTC IS ACTIVE
Note. Make sure the battery is fully charged before proceeding.
- Cycle the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read the active DTCs. Does the scan tool display: U0101-00-LOST COMMUNICATION WITH TCM? Yes Refer to the «DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX»(ref-646299-S14228489272014072800000) and perform the U0101-87-Lost Communication with TCM diagnostic procedure. No Refer to «STORED LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS»(ref-646292-S31636716672014072800000) and perform the Stored Lost Communication DTCs diagnostic procedure.
ACTIVE DTC
Note. For vehicle communication problems, use the scan tool to refer to the Network Review Screen. The screen depicts a high level view of the vehicle network. Fault and problem areas appear in red. Selecting any of the network components allows access to the source of the problem.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With a scan tool, select View DTCs. Is the status Active for this DTC? Yes Refer to the «DTC INDEX»(ref-646339) article and perform the U0141-Lost Communication with Body Control Module diagnostic procedure. No Refer to «STORED LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS»(ref-646292-S31636716672014072800000) and perform the Stored Lost Communication DTCs diagnostic procedure.
