ADJUSTMENTS
Note. Prior to performing wheel alignment, perform visual and mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components. See the PRE-ALIGNMENT CHECKS article in this section. For basic wheel alignment theory, refer to the WHEEL ALIGNMENT THEORY/OPERATION article in this section.
FRONT WHEEL CAMBER & CASTER ADJUSTMENT
Caster is not adjustable on FWD vehicles. Loosen cam and through bolts on each side. (Scheme 1) Rotate cam bolt to move top of wheel in or out to specified camber. See ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS.
Tighten through bolt nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Scheme 1
FRONT WHEEL TOE ADJUSTMENT
Note. Set each front wheel at 1/2 of total toe specification. On vehicles equipped with power steering, set wheel toe position with engine running.
Center steering wheel and hold with steering wheel clamp. Loosen tie rod lock nuts. Rotate rods to set toe to specifications. See ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten tie rod lock nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust steering gear to tie rod boots at tie rod. Remove steering wheel clamp.
REAR WHEEL CAMBER & TOE ADJUSTMENT
Note. Rear wheel alignment adjustments, if required, are made by adding 0.01" (.25 mm) shims between spindle mounting surface and axle casting.
Scheme 2
- Block front wheels, and release parking brake. With suspension supported, remove wheel, grease cap, cotter pin, castle lock, adjusting nut and brake drum.
- Loosen, but DO NOT remove 4 backing plate mounting bolts. Adjust alignment by adding shims. (Scheme 2) NOTE: Each shim changes alignment reading by 19/64° (.3°). DO NOT use more than 2 shims to make adjustments.
- Tighten 4 backing plate mounting bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m). Install brake drum, and adjusting nut. Tighten adjusting nut to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 N.m) while rotating wheel. Back off adjusting nut to completely remove preload, and retighten nut finger tight.
- Install castle lock, cotter pin, grease cap and wheel. Lower vehicle, and recheck rear wheel alignment.
