DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet motor moves each of the power windows, including power vent windows. A positive and negative battery connection to either of the 2 motor terminals will cause the motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current through these same 2 connections will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction.
Each individual motor is grounded through the master switch by a wire attached to the instrument panel reinforcement.
Components of the power window system are: switches and bezel, connectors, motors, regulators and wiring harnesses.
Check for faulty power window relay or faulty power window switches.
ONE WINDOW FAILS TO OPERATE
If one window does not operate, even if both master and passenger side power window switches are pressed, check for faulty master power window switch or power window motor that is inoperative. If one window does not operate, only when either master or passenger side power window switch is pressed, but does operate when both switches are pressed, check power window switch that is inoperative.
WINDOW MOTOR TEST
- Remove door trim panel. See «WINDOW MOTOR»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect motor connector. Connect positive battery test lead to either motor terminal. Connect negative battery test lead to remaining motor terminal. Motor should rotate, moving window up or down. If motor does not rotate, go to next step.
- Reverse battery lead connections. If motor still does not rotate, remove motor. See «WINDOW MOTOR & REGULATOR»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If motor does rotate up or down, motor should be reversed one more time to complete a full-window travel inspection.
VENT WINDOW MOTOR TEST
- Connect positive battery test lead to either motor terminal. Connect negative battery test lead to remaining motor terminal. Motor should now rotate in one direction moving window open or closed. If window is in full closed or open position, no movement will be observed in that direction.
- Reverse battery leads. Window should move in opposite direction. If window moved completely open and closed, motor should be reversed one more time to complete a full window movement inspection.
- If window does not move, remove the motor and cable assembly. Refer to «VENT WINDOW MOTOR»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) or VENT CABLE & CRANK MECHANISM under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Service and repair as necessary.
WINDOW SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST
Note. The following wiring test sequence determines whether or not voltage is continuous through body harness to switch.
- Remove window switch. See «WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Carefully separate multiple terminal block on wiring harness from window switch body.
- Using a test light, connect one lead to Black wire terminal. Touch other test light to Tan wire terminal.
- If test light comes on, wiring circuit between battery and switch is okay. If light does not come on, check 30-amp circuit breaker or check for a broken feed or ground wire. Repair and replace as necessary.
WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
Remove switch from mounting position. See WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using an ohmmeter, determine correct continuity. See MASTER WINDOW SWITCH POSITION CONTINUITY TEST table or PASSENGER DOOR WINDOW SWITCH POSITION CONTINUITY TEST table. If there is no continuity at any one of the switch positions, replace switch. (Scheme 1)or (Scheme 2).

VENT SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST
- Remove overhead console and disconnect wire connectors. See «VENT WINDOW MOTOR»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect voltmeter to terminals No. 4 and 5. Test for battery voltage.
- If no battery voltage is present, test 20-amp fuse and wiring. Service and repair as necessary. If battery voltage is present, go to «VENT WINDOW MOTOR TEST»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows__vent-window-motor-test) .
Removal
- Lower door glass. Disconnect battery negative cable. Remove screw holding door latch handle bezel to door trim panel. Separate bezel from door.
- Remove screw holding upper door trim to side view mirror frame. Remove plugs and screws holding trim to door from above map pocket. Remove plug and screw holding bottom rearward edge of trim to door.
- Remove plugs and screws holding armrest to door panel. Remove screw holding window crank to regulator. Separate window crank from door. Disengage trim clips holding trim panel to perimeter door inner panel.
- Lift trim panel upward to disengage barb clips at top of trim panel. Disconnect courtesy light, power lock switch and power window switch wire connectors. Separate trim panel from door.
- Position door glass in full up position. Tape glass to door frame to hold glass in up position. If window is not in full up position, remove only motor from door. Remove nuts from motor and cable housing.
- Ensure motor is facing outward before separating motor from housing. Using a flat tool, slowly separate motor from housing. Ensure cable drum under motor stays inside cable housing. (Scheme 3)
- When motor is fully separated, assist spring will be completely unwound. Remove assist spring by releasing tabs on opposite sides of spring. DO NOT remove spring from case.

Installation
- Install motor into center of housing with one stud securing motor to housing. Before installing new spring, power motor into full-up position.
- Replace assist spring on cable housing. Wind spring counter clockwise 3 1/2 turns on right door, and clockwise 3 1/2 turns on left door. Install other 2 studs and nuts. Tighten nuts to 35-45 INCH lbs. (4-5 N.m). Ensure cables are not twisted prior to installing motor and housing into door. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation
- Remove front door trim panel. See «WINDOW MOTOR & REGULATOR»(/dodge/caravan/ii-1990-1995/remont/windows/#power-windows) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect window lift plate from glass. Disconnect window track from door.
- Disconnect window lift motor and drive cables. Disconnect electrical connections. Carefully remove window track, cables and lift motor assembly from door. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove rear quarter trim panel. Disconnect wiring connector. Remove 3 screws attaching motor to cable. Remove 2 bolts attaching motor bracket to quarter panel. Remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove driver's door mirror/window switch bezel from armrest. Disconnect wiring connector. Remove switch from bezel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Vent window switches are located in overhead console. Unscrew mounting screws. Slide console forward toward windshield until console unhooks from roof bracket. Disconnect wiring harness from console. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Remove windshield side garnish molding. Remove rear seat(s). Remove front door and liftgate scuff plates. Remove right or left side cable upper track cover.
- Remove pillar garnish molding and seat belt. Remove upper and lower trim panel for left side. Remove one piece trim panel for right side. Remove 2 bolts attaching crank mechanism to quarter panel.
- Remove 3 screws attaching cable to motor. (Scheme 4) Disengage pivot from quarter glass. Remove cable retaining clip, and remove cable assembly.
Scheme 4
- Position cable to motor, ensuring cable pulley engages with motor. Install 3 screws attaching cable to motor. Engage pivot to quarter glass.
- Install crank mechanism bolts and pull mechanism rearward while tightening bolts. Proper alignment is required for smooth non-binding operation. Install cable retaining clip. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
