Engine System Testing & Engine Component Testing - Ram Pickup, Ram Van & Ram Wagon - Gasoline: Diagnosis Dodge Cab & Chassis R3500

TEST VER-1: POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION

Note. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being stored Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module and Air Bag Control Module (ACM). To program PCM and clear DTCs from CAB and ACM modules, see PROGRAMMING

Inspect vehicle to ensure all components related to repair are properly connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. Inspect engine oil for fuel contamination. Change engine oil and filter as necessary. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and stays running, test is complete. If engine does not start, or starts and stalls, check for related technical service bulletins. See NO-START DIAGNOSIS or DRIVEABILITY PROBLEMS in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article for additional testing.

TEST VER-2: POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION

  1. Inspect vehicle to ensure all components related to the repair are properly connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. Using scan tool, clear DTCs from PCM and reset all values in adaptive memory. If repair procedure did include replacing PCM, go to next step. If repair procedure did not include replacing PCM, go to step 4 .
  2. Using scan tool, read PCM DTCs. If PCM has been replaced and correct VIN and mileage have not been programmed, a DTC will be set in CAB and ACM modules. If necessary, enter correct VIN and mileage in PCM and use scan tool to clear DTCs from CAB and ACM modules. Road test vehicle at 40 MPH for 5 minutes. If verification test is for an A/C system DTC, ensure A/C system operates during road test. Ensure transmission upshifts through all gears. Bring vehicle to a stop and turn engine off for at least 10 seconds. Go to next step.
  3. Ensure transmission upshifts through all gears. Bring vehicle to a stop and turn engine off for at least 10 seconds. Using scan tool, read PCM DTCs. If a DTC has reset, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If original DTC did not reset and no new DTCs are set in memory, system is operating correctly and repair is complete.
  4. Road test vehicle at 40 MPH for 5 minutes. If verification test is for an A/C system DTC, ensure A/C system operates during road test. Ensure transmission upshifts through all gears. Bring vehicle to a stop and turn engine off for at least 10 seconds.
