TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Inspection

Inspect exhaust manifold for cracks. Using feeler gauge and straightedge, check gasket surface on exhaust manifold for warpage. Replace or repair exhaust manifold if warpage exceeds .008" (.20 mm) per 12" (305 mm).

Check cylinder head for warpage. Replace or lightly resurface cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

  1. Inspect valve lifter for wear in valve lifter-to-camshaft contact area. Inspect valve lifter bore in cylinder block and outside surface of valve lifter for scoring.
  2. Measure valve lifter O.D. and valve lifter bore diameter in cylinder block to determine oil clearance. Valve lifter O.D., bore diameter and oil clearance must be within specification. See «VALVE LIFTERS»(ref-97381-S12038985982001050300000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Cylinder block may be bored for oversize valve lifter if bore is scored or bore diameter exceeds specification. See «SPECIAL ENGINE MARKS»(ref-97381-S16757793072001050300000) under ENGINE IDENTIFICATION for stamping of cylinder block if oversize valve lifters are used.
CAUTIONIf camshaft is replaced, valve lifters must also be replaced. Whenever camshaft or valve lifters are replaced, add one pint of Mopar crankcase conditioner to engine oil for at least 500 miles to aid in break-in.

Inspect camshaft for wear. Replace camshaft if journal diameter is not within specification. See CAMSHAFT table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

  1. Inspect components for damage. Using straightedge and feeler gauge, check flatness of oil pump cover at rotor side of oil pump cover. Replace oil pump cover if a .0030" (.076 mm) feeler gauge will fit between straightedge and oil pump cover.
  2. Measure inner and outer rotors thickness and outer rotor outside diameter. Replace both rotors as an assembly if measurement is equal to or less than specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-97381-S04192250962001050300000) table.
  3. Install outer rotor in timing chain cover. Press outer rotor to one side, against timing chain cover. Using feeler gauge, measure outer rotor-to-timing chain cover clearance. If clearance is equal to or exceeds specification but outer rotor outside diameter is within specification, replace timing chain cover.
  4. Install inner rotor in timing chain cover so chamfered side of rotor is facing upward (toward oil pump cover). Using feeler gauge, measure inner rotor-to-outer rotor clearance between tip of inner and tip of outer rotor. Replace both rotors as an assembly if clearance is equal to or exceeds specification.
  5. Place straightedge across surface of timing chain cover, above both rotors. Using feeler gauge, measure rotor end clearance between rotors and straightedge. Replace timing chain cover if clearance is equal to or exceeds specification if rotor thickness is within specification.
  6. Ensure pressure relief valve slides freely in bore. Check pressure relief valve spring free length and pressure. Replace pressure relief valve spring if not within specification.
