The camshaft position sensor contains a hall effect device that provides cylinder identification to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (1). (Scheme 18)and (Scheme 19). The sensor generates pulses as groups of notches on the camshaft sprocket pass underneath it. The PCM keeps track of crankshaft rotation and identifies each cylinder by the pulses generated by the notches on the camshaft sprocket.

When metal aligns with the sensor, voltage goes low (less than 0.3 volts). When a notch aligns with the sensor, voltage spikes high (5.0 volts). As a group of notches pass under the sensor, the voltage switches from low (metal) to high (notch) then back to low. The number of notches determine the amount of pulses. If available, an oscilloscope can display the square wave patterns of each timing event.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove air cleaner box.
  3. Unlock the camshaft sensor electrical connector. (Scheme 20)
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the camshaft sensor.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts.
  6. Remove camshaft sensor. (Scheme 21)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unlock the camshaft sensor electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the camshaft sensor. (Scheme 22)
  4. Loosen the mounting bolts. (Scheme 23)
  5. Remove camshaft sensor. (Scheme 24)
  6. Camshaft Position Sensor removed. see scheme 8

3.5L

  1. Install camshaft sensor. see scheme 9
  2. Install the mounting bolts and tighten, refer to the «TORQUE»(ref-245456-S19734689782006110200000) chart for value.
  3. Install and lock the camshaft sensor electrical connector.
  4. Install air cleaner box.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

3.8L

  1. Camshaft Position Sensor. see scheme 10
  2. Install camshaft position sensor. see scheme 11
  3. Tighten the mounting bolt to N.m 12 (106 in. lbs.). see scheme 12
  4. Install and lock the camshaft sensor electrical connector.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Remove the electrical connector from the ignition coil. (Scheme 25)
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to «REMOVAL - UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-245454-S10530475002006110200000).
  4. Prior to removing the ignition coils, spray compressed air around the coil area and spark plug. On 3.5L engines, it is necessary to loosen the screws by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the screws.
  5. Remove the ignition coil. (Scheme 26)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the electrical connector from the ignition coil. see scheme 15
  3. Prior to removing the ignition coils, spray compressed air around the coil area and spark plug. It is necessary to loosen the screws by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the screws.
  4. Remove the ignition coil. (Scheme 27)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector from ignition coil. (Scheme 28)
  3. Grasping the spark plug cable, twist the assembly 1/2 turn and pull the cable from the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the nuts from the mounting studs.
  5. Pull coil assembly straight up and off of mounting studs.

3.5L - FRONT

  1. Install the ignition coil. see scheme 18
  2. Hand tighten coil screws and tighten to N.m 6.7 (60 in. lbs.).
  3. Install and lock the electrical connector to the ignition coil. see scheme 19
  4. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to «INSTALLATION - UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-245454-S28311178522006110200000).
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

3.5L - REAR

  1. Install the ignition coil. see scheme 20
  2. Hand tighten coil screws and tighten to N.m 6.7 (60 in. lbs.).
  3. Install and lock the electrical connector to the ignition coil. see scheme 21
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
  1. Install ignition coil over mounting studs. see scheme 22
  2. Connect and lock the electrical connector to ignition coil.
  3. Install mounting nuts and tighten to N.m 11.5 ( 105 in. lbs.).
  4. Install ignition cables to coil assembly.
  5. Connect negative battery cable.
1 - KNOCK SENSOR
  1. Install knock sensor. Tighten knock sensor to 20 N.m (15.2 in. lbs.) torque (1). see scheme 29 Over or under tightening effects knock sensor performance, possibly causing improper spark control.
  2. Route the knock sensor wire in the proper location. see scheme 29
  3. Connect the electrical connector.
  4. Lower vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Always remove the ignition coil assembly by grasping at the spark plug boot, turning the assembly 1/2 turn and pulling straight back in a steady motion.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Front Plugs - Remove the intake manifold. Refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-245454-S15097980062006110200000).
  3. Remove the ignitions coil. see scheme 32
  4. Prior to removing the ignition coils, spray compressed air around the coil area and spark plug. On 3.5L engines, it is necessary to loosen the screws by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the screws.
  5. Remove spark plug.

When replacing the spark plugs and spark plug cables, route the cables correctly and secure them in the appropriate retainers. Failure to route the cables properly can cause the radio to reproduce ignition noise, cross ignition of the spark plugs or short circuit the cables to ground.

Always remove cables by grasping at the boot, rotating the boot 1/2 turn, and pulling straight back in a steady motion.

  1. Prior to removing the spark plug, spray compressed air around the spark plug hole and the area around the spark plug.
  2. Remove the spark plug using a quality socket with a foam insert.
  3. Inspect the spark plug condition.

  1. To avoid cross threading, start the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand.
  2. Tighten spark plugs to 17 N.m (13 ft. lbs.). (Scheme 29)
  3. Install ignition coil assembly onto spark plug. see scheme 34
  4. Hand tighten coil screws and tighten to 6.7 N.m (60 in. lbs.).
  5. Connect and lock the electrical connector.
  6. Front Plugs - Install the intake manifold. Refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-245454-S15097980062006110200000).
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

When replacing the spark plugs and spark plug cables, route the cables correctly and secure them in the appropriate retainers. Failure to route the cables properly can cause the radio to reproduce ignition noise, cross ignition of the spark plugs or short circuit the cables to ground.

  1. Coat threads of spark plug with anti-seize. Be sure not to get anti-seize ANYWHERE BUT ON THE THREADS OF THE SPARK PLUG see scheme 30.
  2. To avoid cross threading, start the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand.
  3. Tighten spark plugs to 17.5 N.m (13 ft. lbs.) torque.
  4. Install spark plug cables over spark plugs. A click will be heard and felt when the cable properly attaches to the spark plug.
