Shift Interlock Systems: Overview Chrysler LHS II

Automatic Trans ~205 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The shift interlock system is mechanically operated using a cable connected between ignition switch and floor shifter or column shifter (depending on model). With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC positions, the gear selector is locked in Park. With ignition switch in OFF or RUN positions, the gear selector is unlocked and allows gear selector to move to any position. The shift interlock system also prevents the ignition switch from being turned to LOCK or ACC positions unless gear selector is returned to Park.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

  1. Ensure ignition key can only be removed from ignition switch with gear selector in Park.
  2. Ensure gear selector is in Park with shift handle push button in the released position (if equipped). Ignition switch should rotate freely from OFF position to LOCK position. Ignition switch should not rotate to LOCK position with gear selector in any other position.
  3. Shifting from Park should be possible when ignition switch is in OFF or RUN positions.
  4. Shifting from Park should not be possible when ignition switch is in ACC or LOCK positions.
  5. If shift interlock system does not operate as specified, verify proper gear shift cable and shift interlock cable adjustments. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-129561-S12917996472000011100000) .
