Avenger & Sebring Coupe
- Apply parking brake. Place gear selector in Neutral. Loosen lock nut on gear shift cable at manual control lever. Manual control lever is the lever on transaxle on which gear shift cable is installed.
- Place manual control lever in Neutral. Lightly pull end of gear shift cable toward manual control lever and tighten lock nut on gear shift cable. If gear shift cable is properly adjusted, engine should start only with gear selector in Park or Neutral.
Breeze, Cirrus, Sebring Convertible & Stratus
- Apply parking brake. Remove set screw from side of gear selector knob. Remove gear selector knob, gear selector bezel and wiring. Gear selector bezel snaps on top of center console and indicates gear selector position.
- Reinstall gear selector knob and set screw. Ensure gear selector is in Park. Loosen gear shift cable adjuster nut at gear selector. Move manual control lever on transaxle to Park. Manual control lever is the lever on transaxle on which gear shift cable is installed.
- Ensure gear selector and manual control lever on transaxle is in Park. Tighten gear shift cable adjuster nut at gear selector.
- Ensure engine starts only with gear selector in Park or Neutral and detent position for Neutral and Drive are within gate areas on gear selector. If engine starts with gear selector in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or detents are not within gate areas, readjust gear shift cable. Reinstall gear selector bezel.
Concorde, Intrepid, LHS & 300M
- On column shift applications, go to next step. On floor shift applications, go to step 6.
- On column shift applications, apply parking brake. Remove upper steering column cover. Note location of gear shift cable and gear shift cable adjuster lock on steering column. (Scheme 25) Using screwdriver, rotate gear shift cable adjuster lock to unlock position.
- Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is rotated fully rearward to Park, and parking sprag is fully engaged. Manual control lever is the lever on transaxle on which gear shift cable is installed.
- Verify transaxle is in Park and parking sprag is fully engaged by slightly moving vehicle backward and forward. Tilt steering column to fully downward position. Place gear selector in Park. Ensure ignition key is removed from ignition switch.
- Adjust gear shift cable by rotating gear shift cable adjuster lock into locked position. Reinstall upper steering column cover. Ensure gear selector operates smoothly without binding, and engine starts only with gear selector in Park or Neutral. If engine starts with gear selector in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust gear shift cable.
- On floor shift applications, apply parking brake. Place gear selector in Neutral. Loosen set screw and remove gear selector knob. Remove ashtray located on center console bezel, below radio. Center console bezel fits around gear selector and on top of center console.
- Remove center console bezel-to-center console screw located just below ashtray area on center console bezel. Disengage clips holding each rear corner of center console bezel on center console. Remove center console bezel.
- Loosen gear shift cable adjuster nut at gear shift cable adjuster. (Scheme 26) Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is rotated fully rearward to Park, and parking sprag is fully engaged. Manual control lever is the lever on transaxle on which gear shift cable is installed.
- Verify transaxle is in Park and parking sprag is fully engaged by slightly moving vehicle backward and forward. Place gear selector in Park. Ensure ignition key is removed from ignition. Tighten gear shift cable adjuster nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 N.m).
- Reinstall center console bezel and gear selector knob. Ensure gear selector operates smoothly without binding and engine starts only with gear selector in Park or Neutral. If engine starts with gear selector in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust gear shift cable.

Neon
- Apply parking brake. Remove screw cover plugs over screws just behind cup holders on center console. Remove screws holding center console to floor bracket.
- Open lid on center console (if equipped). If vehicle is equipped with a non-arm rest center console, remove screw cover plugs near rear of center console.
- Remove remaining screws and center console. Place gear selector in Park. Push downward on tab on gear shift cable collar. (Scheme 27) Unsnap gear shift cable collar from gear shift cable to allow gear shift cable adjustment.
- Ensure gear selector and manual control lever on transaxle is in Park. Manual control lever is lever on transaxle on which gear shift cable is installed.
- Rotate tab and gear shift cable collar upward until gear shift cable collar fully seats against plastic housing in lock position. If tab and gear shift cable collar will not rotate to fully locked position, rotate tab and gear shift cable collar back to unlock position. Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is still in Park. Slightly move gear selector backward and forward while rotating tab and gear shift cable collar upward to locked position. Ensure gear shift cable collar fully seats and tab is against plastic housing.
- Ensure engine starts only with gear selector in Park or Neutral, and detent position for Neutral and Drive are within gate areas on gear selector. If engine starts with gear selector in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust gear shift cable. Reinstall center console.

Avenger & Sebring
- Remove center console to access gear shift assembly. Place gear selector in Park. Disconnect key interlock cable from lock cam and loosen lock nut. Loosen shift lock cable lock nut. Position shift lock cable so end of cable is positioned above Red marking on gear shift lock cam. (Scheme 28)
- Reinstall key interlock cable on lock cam. Ensure spring and washer are assembled properly. (Scheme 28) While lightly pushing key interlock cable coupling portion of lock cam in direction "A", tighten key interlock cable lock nut. Reinstall center console.

- Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. Remove gear selector knob. Remove center console. Reinstall gear selector knob. Ensure gear selector is in Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If interlock cable is being replaced, remove lock pin. (Scheme 29) After interlock cable adjusts to correct position, push down on locking clip.
- If existing interlock cable requires adjustment, lock pin will not be present. Pull outward on locking clip. (Scheme 29) After interlock cable adjusts to correct position, push down on locking clip. Check operation of shift interlock system. Install remaining components in reverse order of removal.

- On column shift applications, go to next step. On floor shift applications, go to step 3.
- On column shift applications, if shift interlock does not operate properly, shift interlock cassette on steering column must be replaced. Shift interlock cable may only be adjusted once after installing NEW shift interlock cassette on steering column. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- On floor shift applications, apply parking brake. Place gear selector in Neutral. Remove set screw and gear selector knob. Remove ashtray located on center console bezel, below radio. Center console bezel fits around gear selector and on top of center console.
- Remove center console bezel-to-center console screw located just below ashtray area on center console bezel. Disengage clips holding each rear corner of center console bezel on center console. Remove center console bezel.
- Loosen shift interlock lever lock nut. (Scheme 30) Turn ignition on. Remove shift interlock cable from retaining bracket on gear selector assembly. Slide end of shift interlock cable from groove in interlock lever. (Scheme 30)
- Operation of shift interlock cable should be checked. With ignition on, pull on end of shift interlock cable. Shift interlock cable should move freely and return to bottomed out position when released. If shift interlock cable operates correctly, go to next step. If shift interlock cable does not operate correctly, check for improperly installed or kinked shift interlock cable. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off and remove key. Pull on end of shift interlock cable. Shift interlock cable should not move when pulling on end of cable. If shift interlock cable will not move, go to next step. If shift interlock cable will move, check for improperly installed or kinked shift interlock cable. Repair as necessary.
- Place gear selector in Park. Slide end of shift interlock cable in groove on interlock lever. Ensure end of shift interlock cable is fully seated in groove.
- Slide shift interlock cable into retaining bracket on gear selector assembly until cable snaps into place. Ensure gear selector is still in Park. Turn ignition off and remove key.
- Loosen shift interlock lever adjusting nut (if not previously loosened) and allow shift interlock cable to adjust to proper position. Shift interlock cable will automatically adjust when adjusting nut is loosened.
- Tighten shift interlock lever adjusting nut. To check for proper cable adjustment, ensure ignition is off. Ensure gear selector lever is locked in Park. If gear selector is locked in Park, go to next step. If gear selector is not locked in Park, readjust shift interlock cable.
- Turn ignition on. Place gear selector in Reverse and try to remove ignition key. If ignition key cannot be removed, go to next step. If ignition key can be removed, readjust shift interlock cable.
- Place gear selector in Park. Turn ignition off. Try to remove ignition key. If ignition key can be removed, shift interlock cable is properly adjusted. If ignition key cannot be removed, readjust shift interlock cable. Reinstall gear selector and center console bezel.
Scheme 30
- Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. Apply parking brake. Remove screw cover plugs over screws just behind cup holders on center console. Remove screws holding center console to floor bracket. These screws are located just behind cup holders on center console.
- Open lid on center console (if equipped). If vehicle is equipped with a non-arm rest center console, remove screw cover plugs over screws near rear of center console.
- Remove remaining screws and center console. Remove set screw and gear selector knob. Remove screws and gear selector indicator bezel located on top of gear selector assembly. Reinstall gear selector knob.
- Ensure gear selector is in Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK or ACC position. If ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK or ACC position, using needle-nose pliers, pull back on end of shift interlock cable at shift interlock lever on gear selector assembly. (Scheme 31) This allows ignition switch to move into LOCK or ACC position.
- Ensure shift interlock cable is fully seated in shift interlock lever and ignition is in LOCK or ACC position. Pry adjuster lock upward, away from shift interlock cable. (Scheme 31) Shift interlock cable will automatically adjust when adjuster lock is moved upward.
- Push adjuster lock downward until adjuster lock snaps onto shift interlock cable. To check for proper cable operation, place gear selector in Park. Ensure ignition switch rotates freely from OFF to LOCK position. Place gear selector in Drive. Ensure ignition switch does not rotate from OFF to LOCK position.
- Ensure gear selector only moves from Park when ignition is in OFF or RUN position. Gear selector should not move from Park when ignition switch is in LOCK or ACC position. If shift interlock operates properly, go to next step. If shift interlock does not operate properly, readjust shift interlock cable or check for defective components.
- Remove gear selector knob. Reinstall gear selector indicator bezel, gear selector knob and center console.
